khutbah Jumah (28/02/1434)

BEING THE FOURTH SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF SOFAR 28/2/1434 (11/1/2013) TITLED: THE MUSLIM BETWEEN HOPELESSNESS AND HOPE

All praises are due to Allah …

O servants of Allah, I admonish myself and you on the fear Allah the Exalted, it is the recommendation of God for us, and for our predecessors.

God says:

“Verily we have directed the People of the Book before you, and you (o Muslims) to fear Allah.” (4: 131).
Brothers in faith! One of the greatest lessons of Hijrah- Migration is the creation of hope. Migration teaches believers the art of creating hope; hope in the promise of God, hope in victory with Allah, hope in the bright future of "there is no god but Allah", hope for comfort after distress, hope for honour after humiliation, and hope for victory after defeat.

Affairs of Muslims today:

Servants of Allah! The reality in the situation of the Muslim Ummah today in most of the countries in the world, is the first thing that disturbs many souls and besieges others with stack hopelessness.

If a Muslim looks towards the east and the west, you discover that the conditions of Muslims hurt the hearts of the right thinking persons. The states have been thoroughly torn apart, their unity severed, their homes have been occupied, and many of their honours have been soiled, secrets exposed, wellsprings destroyed, their houses have been demolished, Mosques have been destroyed, and the Quran had been desecrated. Different forms of suffering, afflictions and misery, fires and smokes surrounds Muslims and their countries, unfortunately, many of the Islamic countries have carved out book of Allah Almighty away from their operations in real life, and many of the lands of Islam has gone to the east or west (in search of a workable system ), and many Muslims have been engrossed in sins, and lusts except a few saved by Allah (swt).

This became the source of despair for many and an outright loss of hope in the possibility of any reformation in the present state of affairs.

It is unbefitting for a Muslim to despair from hope in Allah …

Allah says:

“truly no one despairs of Allah's Soothing Mercy, except those who have no faith." (12: 87)

Hope in Allah is a great virtue. Verily goodness in the Ummah is all- encompassing. But if a Muslim reflect a little, he would discover there is light at the end of these looming darkness, set to radiate God’s willing:

{ وَمَا ذَلِكَ عَلَى اللَّهِ بِعَزِيزٍ} (فاطر : 17)

Allah says: “Nor is that (at all) difficult for Allah.” (35: 17)

A Muslim should know that hope in God should be enduring, he should not be in association with despair from the hope in God and His mercy.

Models of hope in Allah from the lives of the prophets:
O Muslims, examine the stories of the prophets and messengers of Allah who changed the conditions of their people by the order of God Almighty. Nuh (AS) called his people for nine hundred and fifty years, he never despaired, he never withdrew from the work, and never broke the hope, so even at a time when the flood began he still had hope over his son {يَا بُنَيَّ ارْكَبْ مَعَنَا}(هود : 42) “O my son ride with us” (11: 42) as he continued to call him till the last moment.

Allah told the Prophet- peace be upon him, thus:

:{وَاعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّى يَأْتِيَكَ الْيَقِين} (الحجر : 99)

“And worship your Lord until the certainty comes to you” (15: 99),

he preferred being in connection with God - the Almighty – all his life, however after being repelled in Makkah and the hostility of the unbelievers to him, he left for Taif where he encountered distress and opposition, and he came back, then came Angel in charge of the mountains, saying to him: “If you want that I turn the two mountains over them, I would do that” The Holy Prophet (PBUH) displayed utmost trust in Allah and hope in His promises, he said: (No, but I hope that it shall come from them those that will worship God, Almighty),

The Holy Prophet- peace be upon him left Makkah as a displaced migrant and soon after a few years he returned victorious.

Dear brothers in Islam: it should be firmly rooted in the hearts of Muslims to uphold great hope in God Almighty.

Hope in the forgiveness of God:
O Muslims examine this commandment which dispels despair, and gives strong hope:

{ قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لاَ تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ}(الزمر : 53)

“Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (39: 53),

The verse is one of the greatest verses of hope in the Quran. {My servants}, Allah referred to them as “my servants” because they are monotheists; ... because they are believers even if they disobey and sin .. {“Say: "O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! }, ie transgression in the desires, pleasures and violations { Despair not of the Mercy of Allah }, no matter how great your sins are, this is not an invitation to commit sins, but an invitation to those who have fallen to error to come out of this error and quagmire (for Allah forgives all sins) except Shirk- joining partners with God.

In Hadith Qudsi: (O son of Adam, if you come to Me with an earth-filled measure of sins, then, you meet Me without joining partner with Me, I will come to you with a close measure of forgiveness)

This matter demands of you to repent and seek forgiveness, embark on continuous work in the pleasure of God Almighty. . :

(God stretches His hand at night to accept repentance of the sinner of the day and He stretches His hand at day to accept repentance of the sinner of the night),

(Our Lord- the Almighty descends every night to the first heaven while the last third part of the night remains, saying: “who is calls Me, that I may answer him?, who seeks that I may give him?, who seeks My forgiveness that I may forgive him?),

(God accepts the repentance of His slave as long as he has not being in a state of gargling for death ),

In another sound hadith: (Allah accepts the repentance of His slave as long as the sun would not rise from the west),

Allah’s favour is immense and hope in His mercy is great.

The Prophet peace be upon him said: (whoever persist on seeking forgiveness, God will make for every worry a relief, for every distress a way out and He will provide for him where he least expected.)

- Another reason why some people experience despair and hopelessness is when they face difficulties, narrow funds and tight sources of provision, in such situations, they fail to show contentment and satisfaction with God’s decree

You see them, disgruntled and sad-faced, they do not have hope in God's blessings that could be opened by God for them in the future days. This should not be the case for a believer; verily a single grace of Allah could not be sufficiently appreciated by the works of gratitude.

If you experience any form of difficulty in any aspect of life then take solace in the sound health, the security and tranquility God gave you. Take solace in the children God bestowed you, take solace in the advanced provisions he bestowed you its coordination, observe the person who is lower than you in the area of provision for you to appreciate the favour of God on you. Remember this word of Allah:

{ وَهُوَ الَّذِي يُنَزِّلُ الْغَيْثَ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا قَنَطُوا وَيَنْشُرُ رَحْمَتَهُ وَهُوَ الْوَلِيُّ الْحَمِيدُ}(الشورى : 28)

“He is the One that sends down rain (even) after (men) have given up all hope, and scatters His Mercy (far and wide). And He is the Protector, Worthy of all Praise.” (42: 28)

The land could be dried and empty of water until there is no longer hope, until if God Almighty descends His mercy. And so does this matter requires work that needs supplication and prayers .. it requires recognizing God in adversity and prosperity, your situation should not be like the people of disbelief, people of negligence and tyranny, who do not pay attention to the mercy of God and who transgress the blessings that come their way and are ungrateful to Allah Almighty if He bestows on them some blessings.

However the believer experiences goodness and succour in all his affairs as declared by the prophet, peace be upon him, if prosperity touches him, he gives thanks, if difficulty befalls him, he bears it with patience, thus is he on goodness in every situation.

Also be aware that any trial that befalls man, or any hardship he faces in life, it atones for bad deeds and raising to high grades. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in this regard: (even the thorn that pricks him – the believing slave – God cleanses his sins with that).

Some people have delay in child rearing, they search here and there and eventually loss hope. However in Holy Quran, there is the story of Prophet Ibrahim who reached an old age without issue, then came the good news, which initially he did not accept because he could not recognise the conveyer of the good news. But when they informed him thus:

“We came to you with the truth” i.e- from Allah, the Exalted, he did not doubt the Angels of Allah.

Many had such delay for many years and were later provided children. Therefore, it is not right for a believer to despair over any issue in this life as long as he remains connected with God.

Hopelessness happens mostly when difficulty and calamity befalls, when the plots of the enemies are strong and Muslims are being surrounded by misfortune from all areas.

It is obligatory that we should not allow despair into our hearts, hope in Allah is great and goodness of the Islamic nation is all-inclusive.

THE SECOND SERMON

All praises are due to Allah …

Prayer has a great impact in the life of an individual and the society. It is one of the widest entries to success, provision, secured life and a honourable existence. Every person will be able to achieve his determination and resolution in proportionate terms with his level submission to Allah and his supplication to him to actualise his desires in life.

The Prophet said: “There is no Muslim on earth who asks Allah for a request, except that He gives that to him or wards evil away for him in the worth of the prayer, as long as he never goes into sins or break ties of family” (Tirmidhi)

Quran 28:14

14
When he reached full age, and was firmly established (in life), We bestowed on him wisdom and knowledge: for thus do We reward those who do good.
