In The Name Of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Praise be to Allah, the lord of the worlds, Allah says: ({ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيراً } (الأحزاب:21).) There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. ” (33: 21) . We praise and thank Him for His grace and honour and beseech Him for more. I testify there is no god but Allah alone, the compassionate, the merciful, the generous, the Perpetual Forgiver. I testify that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger, his beloved and chosen one among his creation, the leader of the children of Adam.  He is the leader of the messengers, the seal of prophets, the mercy offered to the universe, the illuminating lamp. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense.

Dear Muslims, I enjoin you and I to fear Allah in accordance with the verse:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ ( آل عمران : 102 )

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].” (3: 102) .

Today being the fourth sermon in the month of Rabi’ul- Awwal in which the prophet (pbuh) was born. We focus our discourse on the best of mankind, Muhammad, peace be upon him, where we discussed last week THE MESSENGER: OUR MODEL, and today we shall address THE MIRACLES OF THE MESSENGER OF ALLAH.

What is miracle? :
Miracle is described as a supernatural event associated with a challenge. It is thus named due to the inability of mankind to produce a similar event. It testify to the honesty of the one that brings it. One its condition is that it should be relevant with the message of the one who presents it.

Miracles and related with the messages. The messenger does not distinguishes from other mankind in physical buidup but by the signs that point to his truthfulness. Allah granted His Prophets signs in the dissemination process, or when their people demand, or at the time of denial by their people. Allah, the Creator is the grantor of miracle including its type, time and place. The Messenger’s role is only to bear the occurrence of this miracle. Of worthy note is that the miracles sent are in agreement with the nature of the people it is meant for, and what they are known for, and what fits them so as to serve as strongest proof. The miracles of the prophets sent to the Arabs who live in the desert environment fit such environment, like the female camel of Prophet Solih. In Egypt, magic was widely spread. Thus the the miracle of Musa (A.S) in the stall and the hand was popular among them. The miracle of Prophet Sulaiman came to emphasize that the world is within the dominion of One Creator, who disposes affairs therein as He wills, this in an era where the philosophy of causes and effects was well known. Thus the subservience of the Jins to his command, and his ability to understand the messages of the birds and animals. Prophet Isa (A.S) encountered a people popular for knowledge and medicine. Therefore his ability to heal the dump, the leprosy, the raising of the dead were by the permission of Allah.

Many miracles were performed by Prophet Muhammad such as the Israa wal Miraaj- Night journey and Ascension, the spider’s net at the mount of Hira, and others. We shall mention some of them:

1- The noble Qur’an: The Noble Qur’an is regarded as the greatest proof to the prophethood of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him). The prophet was unlettered, but he challenged the Quraishites and the Arabs to produce a similar copy, but they were incapable to produce even anything like it. It is worthy to note that they were people of eloquence, oratory, rhetoric and poetry. However, this great miracle was not limited to rhetorics, but includes, rulings and character, intellectual knowledge, acounts of the past, present, and the future. Its miraculous status is everlasting till the last hour. If the Muslims are asked about the miracles of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), easily, the answer will be, the Qur’an owing to the embedded proofs and over whelming intellectual challenge. Allah says: (قُل لئن اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإنسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى أنْ يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ وَلَوْ كَانَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ظَهِيراً) “Say, “If mankind and the jinns gathered in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of it, even if they were to each other assistants.” (17: 88)

2- The splitting of the moon: The Makkans asked the Prophet (peace be upon him) for a miracle, and he showed them the splitting of the moon into two halves. However the increased in disobedience, disbelief and accusing him of magic. This was five years before the hijrah. Allah says: (اقْتَرَبَتِ السَّاعَةُ وَانشَقَّ الْقَمَرُ*وَإِن يَرَوْا آيَةً يُعْرِضُوا وَيَقُولُوا سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّ) “The hour has come near, and the moon has split (into two). “ (54: 1)

3- The flowing of water from his (peace be upon him) fingers: Many of the companions narrated the hadith of the flowing water from within the fingers of the messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), on the day of the treaty of the hudaibiyyah and the battle of Bawaat before great multitude of people. None of the companions disagree with the hadith. One of these is the witness of Jabir bn Abdullah (R.A) regarding the account of the day of hudaibiyyah, he said: The people became very thirsty on the day of Al-Hudaibiya (Treaty). A small pot containing some water was in front of the Prophet and when he had finished the ablution, the people rushed towards him. He asked, ‘What is wrong with you?’ They replied, ‘We have no water either for performing ablution or for drinking except what is present in front of you.’ So he placed his hand in that pot and the water started flowing among his fingers like springs. We all drank and performed ablution (from it).” I asked Jabir, “How many were you?” he replied, “Even if we had been one-hundred-thousand, it would have been sufficient for us, but we were fifteen-hundred.” (Agreed upon).

4- Abundant supply of food: The miracle of abundant supply of food took place many times. The prophet- peace be upon him, would increase food by invoking blessing and offering supplication. This miracle happened many times and at different places and events, one of which was the day of Khandaq, where he fed a thousand people from a small sheep and a Saa’ measure of barley. Jabir bn Abdullah (R.A) narrated he saw the Prophet in great hunger, he then went to his house, he brought a sack which contain a Saa’ measure of barley, he slaughtered a sheep, he and his wife prepared a food, then he invited the messenger of Allah- peace be upon him, to it. When Jabir saw the Prophet- peace be upon him, in the company of the people of Khandaq, he became fretful from that observation, his thought went everywhere, he said to himself: “how could this food be sufficient for this crowd?” The prophet knew what was going on Jabir’s mind, thus he instructed him not to remove the pot not bake bread until he bring them to him to bless, then they all ate, and were full, while the food remained they way it was.”

At the battle of Taabuk, the companions were very hungry, they sought the permission of the prophet- peace be upon him, to slaughter some of their camels, he asked them to bring to him the remnant of their food, and he invoked blessing on it, then he said: “Take to fill your vessels.” And they took to fill their vessels until there was none among the army with a vessel without filling it, they ate till they became satisfied, and they packed the remnant.” (Agreed upon).

It is narrated on the authority of Abu Huraira: We were accompanying the Apostle (may peace be upon him) in a march (towards Tabuk). He (the narrator) said: The provisions with the people were almost depleted. He (the narrator) said: (And the situation became so critical) that they (the men of the army) decided to slaughter some of their camels. He (the narrator) said: Upon this Umar said: Messenger of Allah, I wish that you should pool together what has been left out of the provisions with the people and then invoke (the blessings of) Allah upon it. He (the narrator) said: He (the Holy Prophet) did it accordingly. He (the narrator) said: The one who had wheat in his possession came there with wheat. He who had dates with him came there with dates. And Mujahid said: He who possessed stones of dates came there with stones. I (the narrator) said: What did they do with the date-stones. They said: They (the people) sucked them and then drank water over them. He (the narrator said): He (the Holy Prophet) invoked the blessings (of Allah) upon them (provisions). He (the narrator) said: (And there was such a miraculous increase in the stocks) that the people replenished their provisions fully. (Agreed upon)

5- The yearning of the palm tree: The use to deliver the sermon on a trunk of the palm in his mosque using it as a shed. But when a Mimbar was made, the sound of yearning was heard from the palm tree trunk like the sound of a little sheep. The hadith of the palm tree trunk have been related by more that ten companions.

6- Healing the sick: One of the most significant miracles is the healing of the sick; he replaced the eye of Qataadah, and that of Ali bn Abi Talib on the day of khaibar after being bad.

Of the event was the occurrence that involved Ali bn Abi Talib on the day of khaibar when the prophet said: “I am going to handover this flag to a man with whom Allah shall grant victory, he loves Allah and His messenger.” People slept that night curious about who could the man be. In the morning the went to the messenger of Allah to know the winner of the honour. Then the prophet was asking for Ali bn Abi Talib- R.A), and they told him he had an eye defect, and he – pbuh sent for him, and when he came to him, he spitted to his eyes and prayed for him, thus he was healed by Allah through the blessing invocation of the prophet, peace be upon him, and he took the flag, then he fought until Allah granted victory through. (The complete hadith is in the two Saheehs)

The most amazing thing than that is what was related by Imam At-tabraani from Qataadah bn Numan (R.A), that he fought on the day of Uhud, an arrow pulled out one of his eyes, he then rushed to the Prophet, peace be upon him, holding it in his hand. The prophet, peace be upon him collected it and placed it back to its place and prayed for him, and it returned back to its nature, it became the more beautiful and stronger of his eyes in sight.

7- The preference of Prophet Muhammad over all creation: There are many verses in the book of Allah that points that the prophet is the most honoured of the prophets and the best of all creation. Allah says: (تِلْكَ الرُّسُلُ فَضَّلْنَا بَعْضَهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ  مِّنْهُم مَّن كَلَّمَ اللَّهُ  وَرَفَعَ بَعْضَهُمْ دَرَجَاتٍ) “Those messengers- some of them We caused to exceed others. Among them were those to whom Allah spoke, and He raised some of them in degree.” (2: 253). The ststement, “and He raised some of them in degree” have been interpreted to mean Prophet Muhammad. He, peace be upon him said: “I have been preferred by four things: “The earth have been made for me as a place of worship and a means for purification, any person of my Ummah that time of solat comes to him but he could not find surface where to pray, he would find the earth surface as a place of worship and means for purification, and I have been sent to all people, and I have been made victorious with terror (cast in the hearts of the enemy) from the distance of two months ahead of me, and the booty have been made permissible for me.”

All praises are due to Allah, Who permits the pure things and forbade the impurities, as favour and mercy to the universe. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his household, companions and believers till the end of time.

Allah says: (يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّمَا الْخَمْرُ وَالْمَيْسِرُ وَالْأَنْصَابُ وَالْأَزْلَامُ رِجْسٌ مِنْ عَمَلِ الشَّيْطَانِ فَاجْتَنِبُوهُ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ (90) إِنَّمَا يُرِيدُ الشَّيْطَانُ أَنْ يُوقِعَ بَيْنَكُمُ الْعَدَاوَةَ وَالْبَغْضَاءَ فِي الْخَمْرِ وَالْمَيْسِرِ وَيَصُدَّكُمْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَعَنِ الصَّلَاةِ فَهَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُنْتَهُونَ) “O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, (sacrificing on) stone altars (to other than Allah), and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer, so will you not desist.?

Dear worshippers of Allah, the Lagos State government and the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) have both raised concerns over increased establishment of beer parlours in Lagos.

The state commissioner for information and strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan, said the state was worried because there was also an increase in the record of alcohol-induced crashes in the state.  The Commissioner said that the Lagos State government is not pleased with those who patronize the alcohol establishments and go ahead to drive or engage in any activity that could endanger other residents’ lives. The same concern was expressed by the Lagos State Commander of FRSC, Hyginus Omeje, at the commencement of the 2018 Don’t and Drive campaign in Ikeja on 26, November, 2018. He added that any vehicle which its driver tested positive to alcohol would be impounded immediately to ensure safety of lives and properties in the state. Interestingly, Islam had declared intoxicants forbidden and one of the major sins since a long time a ago.
