IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL
BEING THE THIRD SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF JUMADAL THANIYYAH, 14TH J. THANIYYAH/1439AH (2/MARCH/2018CE)
ATTRIBUTES OF THE SERVANTS OF THE MOST MERCIFUL (8); AVOIDING FORNICATION.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, Who says: (وَالَّذِينَ لَا يَدْعُونَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَهًا آخَرَ وَلَا يَقْتُلُونَ النَّفْسَ الَّتِي حَرَّمَ اللَّهُ إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا يَزْنُونَ وَمَنْ يَفْعَلْ ذَلِكَ يَلْقَ أَثَامًا) “Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; – and any that does this (not only) meets punishment..” (25:68). We praise Him, thank Him, we assert our belief in Him, and put in Him our trust. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls, and deeds. And we bear witness that there is no God but Allah alone, the compassionate, the merciful, the oft-forgiving, and I bear witness that our master Muhammad is His servant and messenger. May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be on him, his household, companions and whoever follow their guidance and footsteps till the day of accountability.
As to what follows:
Dear Muslims, I advise you all and myself to fear Allah, in the open and secret, because that is the objective of all acts of obedience and commands and prohibitions. Allah, the exalted says thus:
(يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا (70) يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ وَمَنْ يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَقَدْ فَازَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًا) “O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. ( 71 ) He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.” (33:63).
Dear faithful, this is the third sermon in the month of Jumadal thaniyyah, and we shall continue our discussion on the Attributes of the Servant of the Most Merciful, taking the eighth attribute which is “Avoiding Zina (fornication)” as elucidated in Suratul Furqan having discussed; humility, forbearance, Qiyaamul-layl (Standing for prayers at night), being fearful of the fire, Moderation in spending, upholding Tawheed and Avoiding killing and protecting life.
Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, we are still within the vastness of the Qur’an with the servants of the Most Merciful whom Allah is pleased with and are pleased with Him in Suratul-Furqaan.
Today we shall be discussing another attribute among the forbidden acts and that is Zina- fornication. The servants of the Most Merciful are: Those who invoke not, with Allah, any other god, nor slay such life as Allah has made sacred except for just cause, nor commit fornication; – and any that does this (not only) meets punishment. (But) the Penalty on the Day of Judgment will be doubled to him, and he will dwell therein in ignominy,- Unless he repents, believes, and works righteous deeds, for Allah will change the evil of such persons into good, and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful,” (25:68-70).
Islam protects the religion and the creed, it prohibits shirk- associating partnership with Allah, the major and the minor. Islam also protect life and it prohibits killing and all endangering threats to life. Islam also protects human dignity and honour, and the birth lineage, thus it prohibits Zina- fornication.
Of the attributes of the servants of the Most Merciful is that they do not commit Zina and do not engage in this major sin Allah warned against as He says: “Nor come near to adultery for it is a shameful (deed) and an evil, opening the road (to other evils)”
From this point, Islam forbids Zina, and all enabling matters leading or close to it. It thus forbid being in seclusion with a foreign woman, it forbids lustful look, it forbids dazzling display of ornaments and beauty, it forbids every means that could incite people into obscenity, both apparent and non-apparent. Islam strives to purify the Islamic society from all forms of seducement and obscenity, in other that the Muslim young man and lady are safeguard. It is not part of Islam to neglect the society to give in for obscenity and corruption, exposing the youth to blazing fire, then saying: ‘Do not get burnt.’ Islam forbids all that could lead to Zina, starting with the individual to chastise itself in modesty, protecting the private part, lowering the gaze, for both male and female. Allah says: “Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms.” (24: 30-31)
Islam order the Muslim to modesty until he finds ability to get married legally: “Let those who find not the wherewithal for marriage keep themselves chaste, until Allah gives them means out of His grace.” (24:33). He who strives to be chaste, Allah grants him chastity, and he who strives to patient, Allah grants him patience.
Allah commands that the society be purified of obscenity incitements, it is not proper to find in the public pictures of nudity or crazy singers, or perverted morals, or indecent story, sinful drama, as we see it in our society today.
Islam forbids Zina regarding it as one of the major sins, why? Allah forbids it for the benefit of humanity. Allah has no need for permissibility or prohibition. Our obedience does not benefit Allah, nor does our disobedience harm Him. He permits the pure and good things, and forbids the filthy ones.Allah forbids Zina for the protection of humanity, to purify man, … He wants to safeguard the belief of the believer; he should not be servant except to Allah, not a slave to instinct, nor to desire, nor to a woman, nor any other thing except Allah.
Islam forbids Zina that the believer exist sincerely for Allah, not for any other purpose, that is recounted in the hadith in the Sahih: “The fornicator who fornicates is not a believer so long as he commits it and no thief who steals is a believer as long as he commits theft, and no drunkard who drinks wine is a believer as long as he drinks it” (Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and Nasaai). This is because faith is taken off him in the state of fornication, faith is a raiment that Allah cloths whom He wills with it. If it is taken, and he repents, then the cloth of faith returns to him. Allah wants to guard the believer, guard his character, so that the believer would not be like the animal that does what he desires, rather he does what is right, and that is why the intellect is called ‘al-‘aql’ in Arabic because man thinks and restrains or controls before acting on a matter (like the fetters and rope). However, for those acting on what sweets their souls, and what their desires make alluring to them, without any restrain, have fallen from humanhood to animalism.
Dear Muslim brothers and sisters, Islam forbids fornication and all what could lead to it, but when Islam forbids a thing, it provides an alternative. There is no prohibition except with a provision for a legitimate alternative…’ (Ibn Qayyim).
Islam provides marriage as alternative for fornication, as a fortress for the soul, a smash to desire, and a formation of the Muslim home, including planning for the home, and source of increase in family, in order to actualize the aim of Allah in sustaining the human race on earth: “And Allah has made for you mates (and companions) of your own nature, and made for you, out of them, sons and daughters and grandchildren, …” (16:72) “And among His Signs is this, that He created for you mates from among yourselves, that ye may dwell in tranquillity with them, and He has put love and mercy between your (hearts): verily in that are Signs for those who reflect.” (30:21)
Islam orders the Muslim community to ensure the marriage for unmarried youth in clear terms: “Marry those among you who are single, or the virtuous ones among yourselves, male or female: if they are in poverty, Allah will give them means out of His grace: for Allah encompasseth all, and he knoweth all things.” (24:32)
The command ‘marry’ is directed towards the Muslims in general and to those in authority specifically that they should ensure those unmarried get married so that they would not be instrumental to the devil and deisire. Let not you concern be always for money; what to spend? How much to get? How much do you have? It is not a product for sale, when you marry out you your daughter, you want for her a honourable person, with good moral, … search a man of trusted religion and character for her. The prophet (pbuh) said: “If there come to you (seeking marriage) someone you are pleased with his character and religion, get him married, if you fail to do, there will be tribulation in the land and a manifest corruption.” (tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, and Hakim,). Our society need to comprehend the instruction of Allah- the Exalted: “… if they are in poverty, Allah will give them means out of His grace: for Allah encompasseth all, and he knoweth all things.” (24:32)
Many people living in poverty became rich, and countless number of people in difficulty gained ease, “…After a difficulty, Allah will soon grant relief.” (65:7)
Parents must not turn their daughters to products for sale, they should not prolong their stay to marry, this kind of manifestation in our society today is alien and not of Islam. We should make ease and not make difficulty, we should create provisions and norms that will facilitate compliance with the laws of Allah for the youth, and facilitate establishment of good Muslim homes, such that we find marriage taking place virtually daily, and displace this state of alien perpetual single life – bachelorhood and spinsterhood.
Dear brothers in Islam, there are about twenty eight types of sexually transmitted diseases according to experts, the most dangerous of which is AIDS. It affects fornicators and adulterers who are involved in homosexuality.
These dangerous diseases are made by Allah as consequences for deviation from the nature created for humanity, as brought by the prophets. The prophet warned against these in his hadith of Ibn Umar: “O you Muhajirun (migrants), some five practices, if you are tempted with them, I seek refuge in Allah that you come to them, … fornication will never manifest among a people such that they display it, except that epidemics spread among them, and diseases that were not present among their past predecessors, …” It is as if the prophet (pbuh) was viewing our generation from the unseen and informing of what is happening.
“… that were not present among their past predecessors.”. fornication has been in existence from long time ago, the danger was not in its existence but in its spread, … in its display publicly, when they do not hate the evil, as we have it in the West, and as the evil is spreading to some Muslim countries and the people are keeping quiet and negligent.
“… except that epidemics spread among them, and diseases that were not present among their past predecessors.” The surprise is that the west calls AIDS the white plague, it is of the modern diseases, the earlier generations never knew about, despite the advancement in medicine and technology, they have not been able to find its remedy. There will ever be diseases upon diseases as long as people deviate from the order of Allah established for His slaves.
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, who says in the text of the verse: O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things).” (49: 13). May His peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, family, companions and all believers till the last hour.
Dear servants of Allah, the UN is commemorates the INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY yesterday Thursday- 8th March, 2018 as it is done annually.
Islam honours the woman, it addresses both men and women equally and relates with them equally. The Islamic shariah aims to achieve generally protection, …
