IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL
BEING THE EID-UL-ADHA SERMON FOR 1437 (2016) DHUL-HIJJAH 10, 1437AH(12/SEPTEMBER/2016CE)
Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, Lailahailla Allah, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar, WalillahilHamd!
All praises are due to Allah Who had blessed us with open and secret favours and made the sacrificial animals subservient to us and had created seasons for vying towards goodness. I testify there is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate, and I testify that Muhammad (pbuh) is the servant of Allah sent to all mankind and jinns. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on him (pbuh), his families, his companions whom Allah had granted piety to their souls.
As to what follows,
Dear faithful, we are in one of the days of Allah; day for the festival of sacrifice, the day of the greatest pilgrimage, in which the pilgrims return from Muzdalifa, to throw pebbles, make the sacrifices, shave or clip their hairs and ultimately make the tawaf al-ifaadho which is the second pillar of hajj after staying at Arafat. Allah says:“ And [it is] an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people on the day of the greatest hajj …” (9: 3).And the day is referred to as the day of greatest pilgrimage because most hajj rites are done on that day.
It is as well referred to as the day of sacrifice due to the slaughter of animals on that day. Allah (swt) enjoins the sacrifice upon Muslims on this day as an extension of kindness to them, their relatives, their neighbours and the indigents in the community.
The recommendation in the sunnah is that the sharing of the meat should be divided into three parts; one-third to the owner and his family, one-third for relatives and neighbours, and the last one-third for the indigents.
Allah ordained the sacrificial animals on the day of feast as an expansion of His generousity on the Muslim nation, such that it would not be an engagement for the well-to-do alone while the indigents languish in agony and grief.
The sacrifice reminds us of an everlasting event in the life of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) who sacrificed all he had for the sake of Allah.
He sacrificed his homeland when he migrated from it. “And [then] he said, “Indeed, I will go to [where I am ordered by] my Lord; He will guide me.” (37: 99)
He also sacrificed his life for Allah when he was casted into fire and he had nothing except to say:“Sufficient for me is Allah” Allah says: “Allah said, “O fire, be coolness and safety upon Abraham.” (21: 69)
He also sacrificed his only son in his youth age when he could go on errands, he said to him: “And when he reached with him (the age of) exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I (must) sacrifice you, so see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” ( 103 ) And when they had both submitted and he put him down upon his forehead, ( 104 ) We called to him, “O Abraham,( 105 ) You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. (106) Indeed, this was the clear trial. (107) And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, (108) And We left for him [favorable mention] among later generations: (109) “Peace upon Abraham.” (110) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. (111) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants. (112) And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.
Allah (swt) rewarded him for his sacrifice by granting him another son- Ishaaq, who was also a prophet among the righteous.
Why has Ibrahim (AS) attained this everlasting status? What is the secret? The secret is as stated in the qur’an thus:“Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.” (37: 11). A believing servant who subdues his soul for Allah, and liberates it from all shackles of polytheism. (swt). A believer regarding what is with Allah, … A believer in the power of Allah, .. A believer in meeting Allah, …A believer in his pledges and covenants, such is the one Allah grants an uncommon strength and ability.
Dear faithful, we obviously need to learn from this lesson, which is made eternal by Allah. It is a reality that stands as reference point for humanity in the entire history of man. Allah supported Ibrahim, and ransomed Ismail with a great sacrifice. Allah perpetuates this event by this day, and the udh-hiyyah, “Make the sacrifice, verily it is the tradition of your father- Ibrahim.” (Ibn Majah)
Dear Muslims, that our beloved country is passing through an economic decline is obvious to you all, as could be seen in theextent of difficulty of livelihood experienced by majority of the citizens. Some of the causes of the present situation includes:The exchange rate- hegemony of the American dollar over the naira, the fall in crude oil price in the world market, negligence of all stakeholders- government and individuals towards agriculture, huge amount of debts- locally and externally, and above all the effect of Riba- usury which causes economic downturn and misfortunes in both private and public affairs.
There would not be a way out from this situation except through To free the economy from the grip of usury. Allah says: “O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains (due to you) of interest, if you should be believers. (279 ) And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.” There is no other sin in Islam where Allah (swt) expresses this kind of warning and threat. The prophet- pbuh curses the accepterof usury, the payer, the scribe, and the two witnesses.
We should focus on a productive economy which focuses on consumption of locally madegoods, and is fully active in exportation of goods to other countries with low import level. Obviously this requires a great effort and wise plannings and policies by the government, plus a high level of sacrifice and patience from the citizenry. The government should diversify into agriculture now because agriculture used to be our mainstay long before the discovery of crude oil. We have arable lands in massive quantities good for both cash crops and food crops. Importantly, we Muslims should take this message seriously, because we have been advised in this direction by the messenger of Allah – pbuh who encourages us thus: “Any Muslim that plants or cultivates, and eats of it a bird, or a person or animal, except that be a charity for him”
Some of the means of poverty alleviation in Islam, which is highly potent in this regard include that every person has a job where he earns an income, small or huge- in form of trade, craft, or service, so that he would not be a burden on others. Every wealth-to-do person should as well support the less- privilegeamong his family members, while the rich ones pays their Zakat, and every capable individual pay the voluntary charity to the needy in the society.
All praises are due to Allah. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon Prophet Muhammad, his household, companions and believers till the end of time.
Honoured Muslims, hijab is a religious obligation for every Muslim female of puberty age. Wearing hijab is obedience to Allah, and the messenger- pbuh. It is modesty, purification, protection, faith, and piety. Objecting it to choose nudity is a sin against Allah and the messenger, and a trait of inmate of fire. It is also a curse, darkness of hereafter, immorality, backwardness, ignorance and tradition of the Jews and Shaitaan. Scholars have the task to proclaim and propagate the virtues and importance of the hijab for the Muslim lady in the masjid, during khutbah, and other Islamic occasions.
Servants of Allah, President Muhammadu Buhari launched the NATIONAL RE-ORIENTATION CAMPAIGN tagged: “CHANGE BEGINS WITH ME” last Thursday. This project is very germane based on the words of Allah that: “ Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves.” (13: 11). Every Nigerian should have it in his mind that, he is the change he hopes for, at home, at school, in offices, in beliefs, in worship, in character, and in relation with others.
Dear believing women, you represent the half of the nation, or even more, therefore fear Allah in all your duties, be good to your children by giving them sound Islamic education, strive with valourto train your children properly for success, because women have most impact on their children than the men. Be good to your husbands, guard your honour and theirs, spend provisions judiciously, and care for the rights of their relatives, guests and their neighbours.
Allah says: “So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard.” (4: 34)
The Prophet (pbuh) said: “If a woman observes her five daily prayers, fasts the month (of Ramadan) and makes the pilgrimage to the house of her Lord, and preserves her privacy and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: Enter Paradise from any of the doors you wish” narrated by Ahmad and Tabarani.
Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
