IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL
BEING THE THIRD KHUTBAH FOR THE MONTH OF SHA’BAAN 27/SHA’BAAN/ 1440AH (3/MAY/2019CE)
ETIQUETTES OF FASTING
All Praises are due to Allah Who guides His slaves to the most perfect etiquettes and opens for them the treasures of His vast mercy during the season in which they would earn favour as Muslims and righteous. They grasped the facts of obtaining mercy, forgiveness and emancipation from the fire. I bear witness that there is no god but Him alone, He has no partner, the sovereigner, the forgiver, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah bless him, his household, and his companions and those who follow them in righteousness days and night till the day of return.
Dear honorable brothers fear Allah as it should be, and make provision in righteousness that ensures acceptance of deeds. “The best of provision is piety.” Be aware that etiquettes and knowledge are the sign of a man’s success in this world and the hereafter. The best and greatest of etiquettes is the etiquettes of relating with Allah, the Exalted, by amplifying His commands and warnings. It is known that, to every act of worship is an etiquette; the solat, the hajj, even the fasting have great etiquettes. The worship would not be valid except with the application of the etiquettes. We have already studied these etiquettes last week, we pointed out that they are of two parts: the obligatory etiquettes; which must be observed by the fasting person. And the desirable etiquettes; which should not be overlooked or neglected, each separately.
As for today, we want to expand the scope a little more and to limit ourselves to the obligatory etiquettes, which the fasting person should observe, any negligence in this regard could affect his fast and reduce his reward. The etiquettes are as follows:
The fasting person must perform the obligatory acts of worship, including the obligatory prayer, which is the most stringent of the pillars of Islam after the two Shahadah, so it is necessary to observe it by guarding the performing of its fundamental pillars, obligatory elements, and conditions at the appropriate time and with the congregation in the mosque. That is of piety, which is the essence of fasting itself and legislated on the Ummah as obligatory.
The negligence prayer is contrary to piety and is liable to punishment. Allaah says: ” But after them there followed a posterity who missed prayers and followed after lusts soon, then, will they face Destruction. Except those who repent and believe, and work righteousness: for these will enter the Garden and will not be wronged in the least” (19: 59-60)
Among those fasting are those who neglect solat in congregation despite its obligatoriness on them. Allah commands in His book thus: (“وَإِذَا كُنْتَ فِـيهِمْ فَـأَقَمْتَ لـَهُمُ الصَّلَاةَ فـَلِتَقُمْ طـَائـِفَةٌ مِنْهُمْ مَعَكَ وَلِـيَأْخُذُوا أَسْلِحَتَهُمْ فَـإِذَا سَجَدُوا … – يعني أتمّوا صَلَاتـَهُمْ – فَلِيـَكُونُوا مِنْ وَرَائِكُمْ وَلِتَأْتِ طَائِفَـةٌ أُخْرَى لـَمْ يُصَلُّوا فَلِيـُصلّوا مَعَك وَلِـيَأْخُذُوا حِذْرَهُمْ وَأَسْلِحَتَهُمْ ” ( النساء :102 )) When thou (O Messenger. art with them, and standest to lead them in prayer, Let one party of them stand up (in prayer) with thee, Taking their arms with them: When they finish their prostrations, let them Take their position in the rear. And let the other party come up which hath not yet prayed – and let them pray with thee, Taking all precaution, and bearing arms, …” (4: 102) God ordered them to pray with the congregation in the event of fighting and a state fear, thus in the case of peace and security it is most compelling. In a hadith narrated from Abu Hurayrah, a blind man came to the Messenger of Allah, he said: “O messenger of Allah, I do not have a guide to lead me to the mosque, grant me concession. When he turned away, he called him and said, “Do you hear the call to prayer? He said: “Yes” He said: “Then answer (to the call)” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not allow him to ignore the congregation, even though he is a blind man without a guide.
The one who ignores the solat in congregation in addition to neglecting an obligation have forbid for himself great blessings, including multiple rewards. Congregational prayer is in manifolds, as underscored in the hadith of Ibn Umar. Ibn Umar reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) assaying: Prayer said in a congregation is twenty-seven degrees more excellent than prayer said by a single person. (Muslim)
He also misses the social benefits that Muslims achieve through gathering for prayer, such as entrenchment of love and familiarity among other benefits in this blessed period.
Of the etiquettes is that the fasting person desist from all what Allah and His messenger forbid, including words and actions, he should desist from telling lies. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Beware of telling of a lie for telling of a lie leads to obscenity and obscenity leads to Hell-Fire, and the person who keeps telling lies and endeavours to tell a lie is recorded as a liar with Allah..” (Narrated by Bukhari Muslim and Tirmidhi)
He should desist from backbiting which is to talk about your brother in what he hates in his absence, whether you talk about him negatively in his look and appearance to shame him or about his character in a derogatory manner. Allah warns against backbiting in the Qur’an and likened it to the worst of form. He likens to a man that eats the flesh of his dead brother, Allah says: (وَلَا يَغْتَبْ بَعْضُكُمْ بـَعْضًا أَيُحِبُّ أَحْدُكُمْ أَنْ يـَأْكُلَ لـَحْـمَ أَخِيهِ مَيْتًا فَكَرِهْتُمُوهُ …”) “And spy not on each other behind their backs. Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? Nay, ye would abhor it… “ (49: 12)
He should avoid tale-carrying, it is one of the major sins, which is conveying a person’s word to another person to him in order to create rift between the two. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The tale-bearer shall not enter Paradise.” (Tirmidhi) “Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) happened to pass by two graves and said: They (their occupants) are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a grievous sin. One of them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being defiled by urine. He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two parts, and planted them on each grave and then said: Perhaps, their punishment way be mitigated as long as these twigs remain fresh. “(Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi and Nasaa’i from Ibn Abbas).
Tale-carrying is to create division and enmity among Muslims. Allah says: (ولا تطع كلّ حلاّفِ مهين همّازِ مشّاءِ بنميمِ) “Heed not the type of despicable men,- ready with oaths, (11.) A slanderer, going about with calumnies, ” (68: 10). He who carries a tale to you will do same against you, beware of him.
He should avoid deceit in all dealings, including buying and selling, production, agreement, and others, and in all recommendations and counselling. Surely, deceit is one of the major sins, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) dissociated himself from one who practices it: “Whoever deceives us is not one of us.” (Narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh). In another word: “…is not one of us.” Every gain earned through deceit is a malicious gain, forbidden which will only earn the person more distance from Allah. Abu Sulayman al-Darani said: “For me to fast the day and break at night with halal morsel is most beloved to me than standing in prayer night and day, and it is forbidden on the sun of Allah’s Oneness to liberate the heart of a slave whose stomach has forbidden morsel, especially at the time of fasting, let the fasting person avoid consuming haram, for that is a destructive poison to the religion.”
He should avoid musical instruments in all its forms, it is forbidden, with increased degree of forbiddeness when accompanied with music and voices of singers and erotic songs, in order to guard the mind and intellect in life and be saved from punishment in the hereafter. Those that display it in Ramadan should beware, on the excuse that it is fun for the mind from the challenge of hunger and tiredness during fast. Allah says: (وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَشْتَري لـَهْـوَ الحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللهِ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ وَيَتـّخِذَهَا هُزْوًا أُولَئِكَ لـَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ) “But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty.” (31:6)
The enemies of Islam succeeded in this act of plotting against the Muslims until they repelled them from the remembrance of Allah and the duties of their religion and their lives, to the extent that many listen to it more than they listen to the recitation of the Qur’an and the hadith of the prophet and the words of scholars which contain explanation of their religious rules.
Oh Muslims, beware of invalidators of rewards of fasting, purify yourself from falsehood in words and action. The prophet- peace be upon him said: “He who does not leaves falsehood in words and action, Allah Has no need to his leaving his food and drink.” (Bukhari)
Jabir, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “When you fast, let your hearing, sight and tongue fast from lying and sins, desist from harming the neighbor, and be in humility and tranquility on the day of your fast. Do not make your fast day and break day the same.”
The hope is that you benefit in the days and nights of Ramadan with good deeds and plentiful recitation of the Qur’an and dhikr and supplications and charity and all that pleases Allah. That was the tradition of the messenger of Allah in Ramadan in honour of the period and the manifold rewards.
All praises are due to Allah Who made the sun to be a shining glory and the moon to be a light (of beauty), and measured out stages for her; that ye might know the number of years and the count (of time). “Ramadhan is the (month) in which was sent down the Qur’an, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (Between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting.’ The prophet said: “Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it.” (Agreed upon)
It is worth mentioning the need for renewal of awareness regarding ways of affirming commencement of month of Ramadan, which is close by in few days. The month is established through one of two ways: either by sighting of the crescent of the new moon even by one person or by completing the counting of Sha’baan to thirty days based on the hadith mentioned.
There is an issue that is repeated annually is the issue of differences in time of sighting the moon: The majority of scholars said that there is no relevance for the differences in time of sighting the moon, that the focus in the hadith: “Fast when you see it, and break your fast when you see it” is a general statement for all the Ummah. The others said that the difference of sighting the moon is one of the things necessarily learnt from the religion and cannot be denied, and based on the hadith of Kuraib narrated from Ibn Abbas which was narrated by Imam Tirmidhi in his Sunnah and he was judged sound by Sheikh Albani.
The contemporary scholars have preferred the opinion of the majority in order to unify the worship of the Ummah and preventing division, and because fasting is dependent on the sighting without distinction between countries. Some of them strive to suggest 2226 km as the distance that is considered in the difference in the sighting, whatever is below that, then there crescent is regarded as one in most cases.
Secondly, is the case of Zainab Ali that was released from Saudi Arabia on Tuesday 30 April, 2019 after being wrongly accused of trafficking drugs to the kingdom and the second Nigerian, Ibrahim Abubakar involved in the case. The case exposes a clique of the cartel at Kano International Airport that places hard drugs in bags in the name of travellers at the Aminu Kano airport in Kano. Aliyu departed Nigeria from the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano alongside her mother, Maryam Aliyu, and sister, Hajara Aliyu, but she was arrested by the authorities over allegations that a bag bearing her name contained an illegal dosage of Tramadol.
We thank Allah for this release and victory. We equally advice all travelers to be more cautious now than before because of these men that are bereaved of the fear of Allah and the enormity of standing before Allah to account for all they earn in life; either from halal or haram source.
Lastly is the number of people that have been killed unjustly in the name of trafficking drugs across the globe who knew nothing about the crime. (بأي ذنب قتلت) “For what sinshe was killed.” (81: 9)
