RAMADAN: VIRTUES AND RULES

Praise be unto Allah who decreed fasting on believers making it guard from sins and fire. Allah says:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ (183) ” {البقرة :2\183} , “ شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدًى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ فَمَنْ شَهِدَ مِنْكُمُ الشَّهْرَ فَلْيَصُمْهُ وَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ بِكُمُ الْيُسْرَ وَلَا يُرِيدُ بِكُمُ الْعُسْرَ …” {البقرة :2\285}

O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous(183)…  The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful (184).  We praise and thank Him, seek His help and guidance, forgiveness and repentance. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and deeds. Whoever Allah guides is guided and whoever He misled none will mislead Him. I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without partner, and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger who says: “Whoever fast in Ramadan with faith and hope of reward from Allah, all his former sins will be forgiven” (Agreed upon). May Allah bless him and his families and all his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the day of recompense.

Thereafter,

I admonish you and myself on the fear of Allah, obedience and striving in righteousness … Allah says:

{ وَاتَّقُونِ يَا أُوْلِي الأَلْبَابِ}

{ And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.} (2:197).

Dear faithful we discussed last week preparation for Ramadan but today we shall premise our sermon on Virtues of the month of Ramadan.

Virtues of the month of Ramadan:

Allah (swt) favours some of His creations over others, some times and places over the other. He favours Ramadan over other months – like the similitude of the sun among other stars- with some of the following characteristics:

1- Ramadan as the month of revelation of the Qur’an: Allah says:

شَهْرُ رَمَضَانَ الَّذِي أُنْزِلَ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ هُدَى لِلنَّاسِ وَبَيِّنَاتٍ مِنَ الْهُدَى وَالْفُرْقَانِ ) [البقرة: 2\185].

The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” (2:185). Allah also says: ((إِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ) [القدر:97\1])  Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree.” (97:1) Also He says: ((إِنَّا أنزلناه في ليلة مباركة) [الدخان:44\ 3]) “Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].” (44:3)

2- Other revealed books were revealed in Ramadan: Narrated Wathilah bn Al-Asqa’i from the messenger of Allah (pbuh): The suhuf (scriptures) of Ibrahim was revealed in the first night of Ramadan, the Tauraat was revealed on the 6th of Ramadan, the Injeel was revealed on the 13th of Ramadan, the Zabur was revealed on the 18th of Ramadan and the Holy Qur’an was revealed on the 24th of Ramadan.” (At-tabraaniy)

Ibn Jarir At-Tabari said: “The Qur’an was revealed from the protected plate to the closest heaven to the earth in the night of majesty in the month of Ramadan, thereafter it was revealed to Muhammad (pbuh) in the manner preferred by Allah.”

3- Fasting therein is made compulsory: Allah says: O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous(183)

4- Ramadan, the month of repentance and forgiveness: Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him)said: Five prayers and from one Friday prayer to (the next) Friday prayer is an expiation (of the sins committed in between their intervals) if major sins are not committed. (Muslim). Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: He who observed the fasts of Ramadan with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven, and he who observed prayer on Lailat-ul- Qadr with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven. Also he said: He who observed prayer in Ramadan with faith and seeking reward (from Allah), all his previous sins would be forgiven. Jabir bn Samrah (R.A) said, the messenger of Allah said: “Jibreel came to me and said: “O Muhammad, he who meets one of his parent in life but dies and enters fire, may Allah distance him away from His mercy, say Aamiin, and I said Aamiin. He said: “O Muhammad, he who witnesses Ramadan and dies without being forgiven (in the month) and was drawn to hell, may Allah distance him away from His mercy, say Aamiin, and I said Aamiin. He also said: “He who your name is mentioned in his presence and fails to seek benediction on you and dies, and was drawn to hell, may Allah distance him away from His mercy, say Aamiin, and I said Aamiin.” (At-tabraaniy)

5- Ramadan, month of emancipation from hell: The prophet (pbuh) said: “… And a caller would be calling saying: “O you desirous of good, proceed! O you desirous of evil, withdraw! And for Allah are those that would be emancipated from fire, and that (exercise) takes place every night” (Tirmidhi)

6- Ramadan; the month of opening gates of paradise and locking of gates of hell: Reported in Bukhari and Muslim, Abu hurairah said, that the prophet said: “ The blessed month of Ramadan have come unto you, Allah made fasting in it obligatory, the gates of paradise are opened, the gates of hell are locked, the rebellious devils are chained, …”

7- Ramadan; month of patience and training: Patience is more manifested in fasting than any other form of worship. A Muslim controls his passion for food, drink and other likes, thus fasting is the half of patience and the reward of patience is paradise. Allah says: (إنما يوفى الصابرون أجرهم بغير حساب)

8- Ramadan; month of acceptable supplications: Allah says: (وإذا سألك عبادي عني فإني قريب أجيب دعوة الداع إذا دعان فليستجيبوا لي وليؤمنوا بي لعلهم يرشدون)

“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.” (2:186)

The Prophet – pbuh- said: Three (people) their would not be rejected: the fasting person till he breaks, the Just Imam- leader, and the prayer of the oppressed.” (Ahmad)

9- Ramadan, month of generosity and goodness: The Prophet says: “Allah is generous, He loves the generous ones, He is generous he loves openhandedness, He loves lofty character, and dislikes the bad character.” (At-tabraaniy) He –pbuh- said: “The best charity is that done in Ramadan.”

10- Ramadan; month of the night of majesty:  Allah says:

(إنا أنزلناه في ليلة القدر * وما أدراك ما ليلة القدر * ليلة القدر خير من ألف شهر * تنزل الملائكة والروح فيها بإذن ربهم من كل أمر * سلام هي حتى مطلع الفجر) [القدر كاملة]

Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what is the Night of Decree? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn. (97: 1-5)

“ The blessed month of Ramadan have come unto you, Allah made fasting in it obligatory, the gates of paradise are opened, the gates of hell are locked, the rebellious devils are chained, in it is a night which is better than a thousand month, whoever is therefore forbidden the blessings in it have been truly forbidden all goodness” (Ahmad, Nasaai, Bayhaqiy)

These are some of the lofty virtues of Ramadan- the blessed month. It pertinent for a Muslim to recognize these virtues, and maximize the opportunities in it to earn the pleasure of Allah in this life and the hereafter. May Allah make us among those who are able to work by it.

Ascertaining the new moon of Ramadan:  The new moon of Ramadan is ascertained by sighting of the crescent of the new moon, by at least one just person, or by completing Sha’abaan as thirty days. However, astronomical counting or use of binoculars are only to guide in projecting the likelihood period or place possible to sight the moon. Whenever we sight the moon or hear of its been sighted, otherwise, we complete the count of sha’baanas thirty.

– Abdullah bn Umar- R.A- said: “People were searching for the crescent, and I informed the messenger of Allah –pbuh- that I saw it, and he fasted and instructed people to fast by it.” (Abu Dawud, Al Hakim, Ibn Hiban)

– Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: Whenever you sight the new moon (of the month of Ramadan) observe fast. and when you sight it (the new moon of Shawwal) break it, and if the sky is cloudy for you, then observe fast for thirty days. Imam Tirmidhi says that the majority of scholars work by this saying that the witness of one person is acceptable for fasting. Ahmad, Shafi’ hold same opinion, while Nawawi describes  it as the most correct.

As for the new moon for shawwal, it is confirmed by sighting of the moon or completing Ramadan as thirty days, the witness of one just witness is not acceptable except with two upright witnesses according the generality of scholars, except Abu thaor who does not differentiate between the crescent of Shawwal or Ramadan, to him he accepts one just witness for both.

The second sermon

All praises are due to Allah, the lord of the worlds. We praise and thank Him. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and deeds. I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without partner, and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger. May Allah bless him and his families and all his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the day of recompense.

And Allah has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things.”

O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.” (66: 6)

Dear faithful, today is regarded as children’s day, and we would like to use the opportunity to elucidate the view of Islam regarding rights of children:

Rights of the child in Islam:

  • Good selection of a mother for the child, a religious woman as a wife.
  • For good foetus development, the mother is given concession to abstain from fasting in Ramadan.
  • Prohibition of abortion to safeguard his right to life.
  • Restraint on the estate of the deceased father until the widow wife gives birth in order to guaranty the rights of his children in the sharing of his inheritance.
  • Right to the lineage of his father.
  • Right to be suckled and nursed.
  • Right to be given good name.
  • Right to be spent upon.
  • Right to be reared and cared for in case where there is a divorce, by selecting who to nurse the child.
  • Right to maintain justice among all the children.
  • Right to education.
  • Right to play with the child and show him kindness.
  • Right to be secured from being abused, or cursed.

Secondly, Nigeria is celebrating democracy day on 29th May, 2016. It is sacrosanct that good governance must ensure justice among the people, security in the land, and provision of social amenities and uphold a fight against corruption. Including all shades of corruption, starting with the large scale corruption to the minor ones, even where those involved are men of caliber and timber in high positions, or relatives and friends of those in corridors of power. We beseech Allah to assist President Muhammadu Buhari  in his fight against corruption. We call on the citizens to stand by their President and support him with good advices and prayers.
