BEING THE THIRD SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF DHUL QA’DAH 21/D.QA’DAH/1439AH (3/AUGUST/2018CE)

SOME ETIQUETTES OF TRAVELLING FOR HAJJ AND OTHER JOURNEYS

All Praises belong to Allah Who made the pilgrimage one of the pillars of Islam. Allah says: (﴿وَأَذِّنْ فِي النَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ يَأْتُوكَ رِجَالًا وَعَلَىٰ كُلِّ ضَامِرٍ يَأْتِينَ مِنْ كُلِّ فَجٍّ عَمِيقٍ﴾)And proclaim to the people the Hajj [pilgrimage]; they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel; they will come from every distant pass.” (22: 27)

We celebrate His praises and seek help and guidance from Him. We believe in Him and put our trust in Him. Whom Allah guides surely is guided and whom He misleads, surely you will find no one to guide or protect him. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, and that Muhammad (pbuh)is His servant and Messenger, who said: “Hajj is jihad of the aged, the sick, and the woman.”Peace and blessings of Allah be on him, his family, companions and followers until the Day of recompense.

As to what follows,

Servants of Allah, I advise you and myself to fear Allah for that is the divine recommendation for every believer in God and the Hereafter, Almighty Allah says:

And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered. (2:203)

Brothers and Sisters in Islam, having talked about DESCRIPTION OF HAJJ AND UMRAHlast week, we shall today centre our sermon on SOME OF ETIQUETTES OF TRAVELLING FOR HAJJ AND OTHER FORMS OF TRAVELLINGS.

Imam Nawawi mentioned some great etiquettes of travelling which we shall discuss as follow:

1- To consult trustworthy persons with hajj experiences and knowledge. It is a duty on persons consulted to discharge the obligation in trust.

2- To perform solatul-istikharah for seeking Allah’s guidance regarding right time to make the journey for hajj. The prayer is two rakats of non-obligatory prayer; reciting Suratul-kafirun and ikhlas after Suratul-Fatihah in the first and second rakat respectively, and it is recommended to recite this prayer at the end thus: “

Allaahumma inni astakheeruka bi ‘ilmika wa-astaqdiruka bi qudratika waas’aluka min fadlika, fainnaka taqdiru wala-aaqdir, wata’lamu walaaa’lam, wa anta ‘allaam al-ghuyoob. Allaahumma fa in kunta ta’lamuh aadha’l-amra (then the matter should be mentioned by name) khayran li fi ‘aajilamri waaajilihi (or: fi deen iwama’aashiwa ‘aaqibatiamri) faqdurhu li wayassirhu li thumma baarik li fihi. Allaahummawa in kunta ta’lamu anna husharrun li fi deen iwama’aashiwa ‘aaqibatiamri (or: fi ‘aajiliamri waaajilihi) fasrifni ‘anhu [wasrafhu ‘anni] waqdur li al-khayrhaythu kaana thumma radinibihi

MEANING: (O Allaah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allaah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me both in this world and in the Hereafter (or: in my religion, my livelihood and my affairs), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: for me both in this world and the next), then turn me away from it, [and turn it away from me], and ordain for me the good wherever it may be and make me pleased with it.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari)

3- To make repentance from all sins, return people’s rights and properties, and write a bequest with appropriate witnesses. Mend ties of broken relationship, settle debts, and make provision for the family.

4- To seek the pleasure of the parents by being kind to them and all those in the same level of kindness. It is meritorious for the wife to gain the husband’s pleasure and her relatives as well. It is recommended for the husband to perform the hajj with his wife.

5- To source wealth from legitimate provisions: One should strive to ensure all his provisions for hajj are from halal sources. In any event of unlawful earnings renders the hajj unacceptable before Allah. Imam Ahmad says: “He will not be rewarded for the hajj performed with unlawful money.”

6- Adequate preparation from good provisions and wealth: Mustahabb settling them for comforting him needy, and says: ({يا أيها الذين آمنوا أنفقوا من طيبات ما كسبتم، ومما أخرجنا لكم من الأرض، ولا تيمموا الخبيث منه تنفقون} [البقرة:267/ 2])

{O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself]…} [Al-Baqarah:267]

7-To avoid argument over petty things in purchases as well as all things that bring one closer to Allah.
8-To avoid sharing things in order to be keep safe from disputes and wranglings.
9- To arrange for strong and comfortable ride:Using the ride for Hajj is better than trekking. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, performed the pilgrimage using his camel which harboured all his provisions including foods. Today pilgrims of Hajj or Umrah could choose reliable Airlines that would not violate appointments. Many intending pilgrims have had their plans for Hajj jeopardized, perhaps forever, by unreliable Airlines.

  1. To learn how to perform pilgrimage:This is an individual obligation, worship done based on ignorance are not valid. It is desirable one equip himself with a Hajj manual or handbook which clearly defines the rites of Hajj.

  1. To be in the company of a group who is as well willing to do good, reluctant to do evil, who could remind him if he forgets, and supports in all meritorious endeavour. The Prophet – pbuh- dislikes travelling alone, as he said: “One rider is a devil, two riders are devils and the three riders are a caravan» {Narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Tirmidhi and Al-Hakim}Then they should choose who to be the leader of group. The Prophet-pbuh- said: “… and when they are three should select one among them as a leader.” {Narrated by Abu Dawood}.

12-Total commitment to worship and devotion, freeing oneself from acts of trading because that occupies the mind. One should also seek the pleasure of Allah in all his action, Allah says: ({وما أمروا إلا ليعبدوا الله مخلصين له الدين} [البينة:5/ 98]) And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion.” (98:5)And the saying of the Prophet- peace be upon him: “Actions are judged according to the intentions”.

13 –To travel on Thursday early enough: It is permissible to travelon Thursday, as «the messenger of Allah rarely travels but on Thursday.”

14- To observe the recommended prayers for travelling which is a two Rakats prayer, reciting Suratul-Kafirun and ikhlas after Suratul-Fatihah in the first and second rakat respectively. On his safe arrival at the destination, he should recite Ayatul-kursiyy and Suratul-quraish, Ikhlas, Falaq and Nas, and then supplication for the need s of this world and the next in sincerity.

15-Bidding farewell: It is mustahabb to bid farewell to his family, neighbours and friends. They all should say this Dhikr to one another: “I entrust your religion, your trust and the end of your actions to Allah, may Allah grant you piety, forgive your sins, and ease for you goodness where you are”.

16- The Dhikr to be said when leaving the house as defined in the sunnah: «O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the being astray or being strayed, or vanished or being dispassed, or committing injustice or being oppressed or being ignorant or ignorantly wronged” Anas narrated that the Prophet, peace be upon him said:« If a man comes out of his house and say: “In the name of Allah, I trust in Allah, there is no power or might except with Allah, it is said to him: You are guided and protected».
And it desirable for him to give charity as he leaves and at every stage of his endeavour.

17- Dhikr when mounting the ride:Before mounting the ride say: Bismillah (In the name of Allah), and if he is sitted on the mount he should say: (Praise be to Allah, Glory be to Allah, Who has placed this [transport] at our service, and we ourselves would not have been capable of that, and to our Lord is our final destiny. Then he says: Alhamdulillah (Praise be to Allah) three times and Allahu Akbar (Allah is the greatest) three times. Then he says: (Glory be to You O Allah, Oh Allah, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, verily, none forgives sins except You).

The Second Sermon

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, his household, companions and all those who follow his footsteps till the day of judgment.

Allah says:

Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land – it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one – it is as if he had saved mankind entirely. And our messengers had certainly come to them with clear proofs. Then indeed many of them, [even] after that, throughout the land, were transgressors.Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,Except for those who return [repenting] before you apprehend them. And know that Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” (5:32-34)

Oh servants of Allah, it is a known fact to the discerning minds that Islam is the religion of peace, which honours the human life to a great extent, it does not accept the killing of a person without a legitimate right. Islam also wage war against corruption in all its forms.
Brothers in Faith, one of the events that is worthy of mentionat this moment is the action of an Imam in Plateau State, Imam Abdullah Abubakr, who is 83 years old, where he protected three hundred Christians in his mosque so as not to be killed by criminals who massacred innocent souls. As stated by the Plateau State governor- Gov. Simon BakoLalong on Tuesday 31/7/2018, when the news came to President MuhammaduBukhari, he promised to honor him with a National honor in order to appreciate this act and encourage others to take up good deeds.
From the story of this imam, Sheikh Abdullah Abubakr, the Imam of a mosque in NigharYelwa village, BarikinLadi Local government, Plateau State, it shows that Islam is not a bloody religion as wrongly believed by the Orientalists and the Westerners who are the enemies of Islam and Muslims. The slogan of Islam in the treatment of non-Muslims is: (لا إكراه في الدّين) (No coercion in the religion: (Al-Baqarah 2: 256),

Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.Allah only forbids you from those who fight you because of religion and expel you from your homes and aid in your expulsion- [forbids] that you make allies of them. And whoever makes allies of them, then it is those who are the wrongdoers.” (60: 8-9)

Therefore, all those killings going on in the North, and all other places in the name of Muslims are only plots of the enemies of Islam and Muslims.

Oh Allah accept our fast, prayers, bowing and prostration. O Allah ease for us Your remembrance, gratitude to You and sound worship. O Allah make the Qur’an the succor to our hearts, light to our faces, remover of our grief and sorrow. O Allah show us the truth and grant us the wherewithal to follow it, show us falsehood and grant us the wherewithal to desist. O Allah forgive the believers; men and women, and the Muslim men and women, both the living and the deceased, You are All- hearing, most near, answerer of prayers. O Allah make this nation- Nigeria peaceful, safe, generous, with abundant welfare, and all other Muslim nations.
