All praises are due to Allah the Lord of the Universe, who says in His revealed Book of Wisdom: “There is indeed an excellent example for you in the Messenger of Allah, for anyone that has hopes in Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah a lot” – al-Azaab:21.

We praise Him, the Perfect and Most Exalted, we give thanks to Him, we believe in Him and put our complete trust in Him. We seek refuge with Him from the evils of our souls and our misdeeds. Whoever Allah has guided is the one that is indeed guided and nobody can lead such astray. And whoever is led astray, then for such, there is no helper/protector that can guide him.

I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah. He is One and has no partner. I testify also that Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) is Allah’s slave and messenger, who sais in his noble speech: “Everyone of you will enter al-Jannah except whoever refuses. They (the companions) said: Oh Messenger of Allah, who is it that refuses? He said: Whoever obeys me will enter al-Jannah, and whoever disobeys me has indeed refused” (Bukhari). Oh Allah! Let you Benedictions and Peace and Blessings be on him and his household, his companions and on all those that follow them in goodness till the day of Judgement.

Thereafter… Oh servants of Allah! I enjoin you and myself with the fear of Allah, the Most High and Majestic, as this is the goal of all desired rites and all acts of (seeking) closeness to Allah in the pure (uncorrupted) religion, in truth with the words of Allah, the Exalted: “…Indeed, Allah accept (the work) of those that fear him” (al-Maaidah:27).

Brothers in faith! The prophet (May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) made hajj in the tenth year of Hijrah. He bade farewell to the muslim in this hajj and did not make another hajj apart from this. He set out on a Saturday, five days to the end of dhul Qa’dah. He had a great gathering of peeople with him up to about 90,000.

When he entered Makkah, he prayed for it and on the eigth day of dhul Hijjah, he commenced the rites of hajj and headed to Munna and passed the night there. He then addressed the people in a sermon on the ninth day of dhul Hijjah.

In his noble sermon, he explained the (essentials of) religion in its entirety, the fundamental parts of it and the branches. Here I present to you that sermon so we can take lesson from it for it is indeed filled with benefits and Lessons.

Oh servants of Allah! After having praised Allah and thanked Him and sought His forgiveness. He enjoined the people with the fear of Allah and obedience to Him, and then said:

“Oh people! Hear me as I explain to you. I do not know whether I will be amongst you again after this year in this place. Oh people! Indeed, your blood and your wealth are sacred, until meeting your Lord, just as you regard this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours (all) sacred. Whoeve has a trust (things) entrusted to him, let him return it to the rightful owners. The interest (usury) obligations of days of ignorance are (henceforth) invalid, and the first riba that I will start with are those that are due to my uncle, Al-abbas bin AbdulMuttalib. Verily, the blood obligations (revenge) of the days of ignorance become invalid, and the first to begin with is the blood obligation A’amir bin Raba’ah bin Haarith, and so are all the work of the days of ignorance, except custodianship (of the Haram), giving of water, and upholding of retaliations, ie retaliation for wilful killing and similar killings with stick or stone. The retribution therein is a hundred camel, and whoever exceed this, then such is of the people of ignorance (disbelief).

Oh people! The shaytan has lost hope that you will worship him, but hes pleased for you to obey him in your other deeds that you consider unimportant. Oh people! The postponing (of the sanctity of the sacred months) is increase in disbelief, and the time has turned round like its form the day Allah created the heavens and the earth. And really, the number of months with Allah are twelve months in the Book of Allah (from ) the day He created the heavens and the earth. Four of them are sacred – three (of them) are back-to-back, and one is (standing) alone.

Oh people! Your women have rights due to them from you, and you have rights due to you from them. (It is your right) that they are never give you exclusive right to anyone else, they should not welcome into your home anyone you do not approve of without your permission, and that they never commit adultery. If they do that, Allah has permitted you boycott intimacy with them, and to strike (chastize) them lightly. If they desist and obey you (If they abide by your rights), then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Your wives are your helpers and succour, so do not lord anything over them. You have taken them (as your wives) only under a trust from Allah and you are permitted to be intimate with them by the words of Allah (the Exalted). So fear Allah with regard to women and seek goodness with them. Have I delivered the message? Oh Allah, be my witness!

Oh people! The believers are indeed brothers, and nobody should take the property of another unless it was freely and willingly given. Oh Allah be my witness that I have delivered!  Do not go back to disbelief after me, fighting and kiling one another. I have left for you what if you adhere to it, you’ll never go astray – the Book of Allah.

Oh people! Your Lord is One. Your father is one. All of you are from Aadam and Aadam is from dust. The most honourable of you are the ones that fear Allah most. The Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab except by the fear of Allah. Have I delivered the message? Oh Allah, be my witness!

Oh people! Alah has given the share of each hier of inheritance. A will is not due to an inheritor and not more than a third (of the estate) can be willed. The child is to be cared for and the adulterer should be stoned. The curse of Allah, His angels and the people in general is on whomever claims (a child) for other than his real father. Allah will not accept anything from him/her.”

This is the sermon that Witness unto mankind (Muhammad, the Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) delivered to the people and he asked them when he had finished, saying: “What would you say”? They (the audience) said, “We will bear witness that you have conveyed the message, discharged (your obligation) and given sincere advice/admonition”. Then he (the Prophet, the Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) said, raising his forefinger towards the sky and pointing it at the people, “Oh Allah! Be my witness! Oh Allah! Be my witness! Oh Allah! Be my witness!” (Muslim).

The time has turned round and Islaam has become a stranger among its adherents. We can seek to get benefit from the sermon again and rectify and make correction in what it was supposed to imbue (in us), regardless of what, by all indices, is undesirable, repugnant shortcomings that has befallen our societies. We ask Allah for health and well-being.

All praise is due to Allah who said in His Noble book thus: (       فصل لربك وانحر إن شانئك هو الأبتر   ) “  So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]. Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.”  the peace and blessings be upon the noblest of mankind, his family members, companions and those following them in righteousness till the day of judgement.

Brothers in faith, the community of Muhammad has benefited largely from the just concluded celebration of slaughtering of animals, among these benefits are:

1.Fear of Allah(taqwa). This is the basic and core of all ibadaat. Alah says: ( لن ينال الله لحومها ولا دمائها ولكن يناله التقوى منكم )  “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you”   (Suratul Hajj 37). Thus Allah needs not how big, beautiful or costly your animal is but your piety, because He only accept the worship of the pious. (انما يتقبل الله من المتقين)

2.Giving thanks to Allah on His favours over us: Appreciating Allah’s favour generally and the gift of subdueing the animals for us.  (   “فكلوا منها وأطعموا القانع والمعتر كذلك سخرناها لكم لعلكم تشكرون.”   )

So mention the name of Allah upon them when lined up [for sacrifice]; and when they are [lifeless] on their sides, then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.”     (Surat Hajj: 36).

Malthus said: “As the generations increase, agricultural productivity will reduce then there is high need for multiplying the cattle we slaughter,in order for the community not to be starved, despite the slaughtering of these animals annually, it increases, same is all provisions given to us by Allah.

3. Remembrance of Allah, Allah says in Suratul Baqarah: ( واذكروا الله في أيام معدودات.) “And remember Allah for specific days.” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Beautify your ‘eid celebration with takbir’ (Related by Tobaraniy). The recommended dhikr by the Prophet is: “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, Lailaha illallahu, Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar walillahil hamd.” This is recommended after daily prayers until the last day of Ayaamu- tashreek which is the 13th day of Dhulhijjah. According to Imam Malik, it ends after Subh prayer but Imam believes that it extends till after Asr prayer. We have chanted the takbeer and we hope rewards from Allah.

4.Obedience to Allah:The I’d reminded us the obedience of our father Ibrahim. Allah says: (   وناديناه أن يا إبراهيم قد صدقت الرؤيا,إنا كذالك نجزى المحسنين(105) إن هذا لهو البلاء المبين(106)وفديناه بذبح عظيم) “You have fulfilled the vision.” Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good. ( 106 )   Indeed, this was the clear trial. ( 107 )   And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice.” (Surat saffaat: 105- 107).

Obedience to Allah is mandatory willingly or unwillingly. Prophet Ibrahim obeyed his Lord to slaughter his only son,I Ismail. May Allah’s peace be on them.

5. Goodness to parents: Allah commanded children to be good to their parents. Allah says: *(وقضى ربك أن لا تعبدوا إلا إياه وبالوالدين إحسانا* .(إسراء23 )”

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment.” (Suratul Israil: 23).

(” *فلما بلغ معه السعى قال يا بني إنى أرى فى المنام أنى أذبحك فانظر ما ذا ترى قال يا أبت افعل ما تؤمر ستجدنى إن شاء الله من الصابرين ))*

“”And when he reached with him [the age of] exertion, he said, “O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you, so see what you think.” He said, “O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.” (Surat-us- Saffaat)

Do you hear the account of Allah about the righteous son, Ismail who was pleased to be slaughtered for Allah? Surely, kindness to parents is one of tge doors to paradise, and is ine of the lessons of ‘Eidul Adha.

7. Dispensing extra generosity on our family members and relatives, being kind to the poor and indigents during ‘Eid. A Muslim should not always seek to be happy alone during ‘Eid rather he should extend his kindness to neighbors and relatives who did not slaughter, he should not be selfish. Allah says: ( فكلوا منها وأطعموا القانع والمعتر كذلك سخرناها لكم لعلكم تشكرون.”(الحج 36)  )

” … then eat from them and feed the needy and the beggar. Thus have We subjected them to you that you may be grateful.”(Suratul Hajj 36.

8. Unification of the Muslim Ummah: The community of Muhammad is one foundationally. Allah says: (وإن هذه أمتكم أمة واحدة وأنا ربكم فاعبدونى ” (92 أنبياء   )  ” “Indeed this, your religion, is one religion, and I am your Lord, so worship Me.” (Suratul Anbiyaa: 92). The Prophet SAW said: “We, the prophets are children of same parent and our religion is one.” We as Muslims, we face one qibla direction in our solats, we all slaughter animal same day after Arafah on the tenth day for the same Creator, Allah. It is imperative to remember the unifying principles always. We call on our scholars to amend the relationships to take leadership of the Umnah. Sheikh Qardowiy saud: “How will a community unite when it’s scholars differ.” Remember always the word of Allah: (  والذين كفروا بعضهم أولياء بعض إلا تفعلوه تكن فتنة فى الأرض وفساد كبير“(الانفال 73) )

“And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do so, there will be fitnah on earth and great corruption.”
