The CONSEQUENCES OF Spreading RumoUrs

All Praises belong to Allah. We praise Him, seek His help, and seek His forgiveness, and we seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own souls and the evils of our actions. He whom Allah guides, there is no misleading for him, and he who is misled, there is no guide for him. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May Allah’s copious and bountiful Blessings and Peace be upon him and his household and companions.

Oh you servants of Allah! I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah Almighty and beware of nuisance of your tongues according to the verse: "O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.Al-Ahzaab70-71]And the Almighty said: “He does not utter a single word, without a ready recorder seated next to him.” [Qaf:18]. This piety is the key to livelihood and the desired bounties of their various kinds. The Almighty said: "… And whosoever fears Allah, He makes a way out for him (2) and He will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah – then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent. (Al-Talaaq: 2-3). He, the Almighty said: "O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion1 and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty." (al-Anfaal:29).

Brothers and sisters in faith! Last week we talked about guarding one’s ears from forbidden things, and today, the topic of our sermon is centred on: The punishment for spreading rumours. Fear God, your Lord, and guard your tongues from rumors that are destructive and dangerous, and beware of the consequences of your words.

You should go and know, may Allah have mercy on you, that spreading rumors is one of the nuisance of the tongue that Allah and His Messenger have forbidden to the servants. Let us understand the meaning of rumors before proceeding with the explanation.

Rumors are things that people say among themselves. Some of them may have happened sometimes while most of them are false! The story of the event of ‘Ifk’ in suratu Nuur is enough for us, where Allah Ta’alah said: "Indeed, those who came with falsehood1 are a group among you. Do not think it bad for you; rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what [punishment] he has earned from the sin, and he who took upon himself the greater portion thereof2 – for him is a great punishment [i.e., Hellfire]." (Nuur:11).

Servants of Allah! The tongue is offensive and needs monitoring, discipline and continuous training from us.

Brothers and sisters in faith! Listen to what the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said in this regard: “A man utters a word pleasing to Allah without considering it of any significance for which Allah exalts his ranks (in Jannah); another one speaks a word displeasing to Allah without considering it of any importance, and for this reason he will sink down into Hell." Danger lies in what the tongue utters.

Allah the Almighty has said: "Have you not considered how Allah presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky? It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded. And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability. Allah keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word,1 in worldly life and in the Hereafter.2 And Allah sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allah does what He wills." (Ibraheem: 24-27).

And the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Whloever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak of good or remain silent.”

Servants of Allah! Rumors are colored in many colors. It may be backbiting, gossip, lying, falsehood, slander, verbal abuse, insult, cursing, and all kinds of verbal foolishness.

Backbiting is haraam. And it is saying about a brother want he would not like. Allah the Almighty said: "Oh you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption (suspicion). Indeed, some assumption (suspicion) is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of Repentance and Merciful. [al-Hujuraat:12].

Gossip is also haraam. It is the carrying about of words to corrupt/spoil (the minds of) people. Allah Ta’alah said: “Woe to every backbiter, slanderer.”

Hudhaifah ibn Al-Yaman, may Allah be pleased with him, said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) say: “’ ‘Qataat’ will not enter Al-Jannah.” Qataat is a gossip.

Gossiping causes punishment of the grave. It has been related from Ibn Abbaas, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) went out of some of the the city’s boundaries, and he heard the voice of two people being punished in their graves. Then he said: "They are being punished and they are not being punished for a major sin, one of them did not use to stop his urine from soiling himself, and the other used to spread gossip.

The remedy for this is clear in the hadith of Muadh, may Allah be pleased with him. He said: “The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Should I not tell you what governs it all? Yes, O Messenger of Allah! It’s the tongue, restrain this. Muadh ask, will we be accountable for the tongue? He peace be upon him said: May your mother grieve your loss o Muadh! Are people not thrown into the fire only because of what their tongue has done? "

It has become common in our time a lot of things that people would originate and then they start talking about it, including those that are spread through the various means of communication such as Facebook, WhatsApp and through websites and others without any proof or seeing the things themselves. So they give their tongues the freedom to say whatever

their pens, to write whatever they like and send through these social media.

The Almighty Allah said: “Oh you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful..” (al-Hujuraat:6).

For these reasons, oh servants of Allah, we must guard our tongues. Consider the words of Allah: "When you rumoured with your tongues after hearing such matters, and uttered with your mouths about which you had no knowledge, and you considered it light; and that, in the sight of Allah, is very great." [An-Nuur:15].

All the parts of the body appeal to the tongue every day to speak only of good. On the authority of Abu Saeed Al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “When the son of Adam wakes in the morning, all of the parts expiate the tongue, so it says: Fear Allah in us, for we are (joined) with you. If you are steadfast, we are steadfast, and if you are crooked, we are crooked.”

The rumors of slander is accusing someone of adultery while the person is not an adulterer. The punishment for such in an established Islamic State is eighty lashes: "And those who accuse chaste women and then do not produce four witnesses – lash them with eighty lashes and do not accept from them testimony ever after. And those are the defiantly disobedient. Except those who repent afterwards and mend their ways, then surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (An-Nuur:4-5).

Second Sermon

All Praises belong to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, and Blessings and Peace be upon the one who was sent as a mercy to the worlds. Allah Almighty said in his Glorious Book:

"The first House established for the people is the one on Makkah, blessed and a guidance to the entire world (96). In it are signs – the station of Ibraheem. Whoever enters therein find safety and his income was safe. And for Allah is the pilgrimage to the House for whomever is capable. And whoever is rebellious and denies, then Allah is sufficient, free of needs from the entire World. " [Al-Imran:
96-97]. And may Allah’s Blessings and Peace be upon our master Muhammad and his household and companions.

It is with great regret, that we heard from the Ministry of Hajj in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that this year’s Hajj is for Saudi citizens only and not for others. And all this is due to the Corona virus epidemic that the whole world has been suffering from for almost two years now! The ministry added that the number of pilgrims this year would not exceed sixty thousand pilgrims. Last year, only the citizens of Saudi Arabia made the pilgrimage, and Allah is Only One that is Capable of removing the calamity and paving the way for Muslims all over the world to perform the Hajj next year. He indeed is the One in charge of Success and is Capable of responding (to requests).

There are also rumors, what some citizens of Nigeria say, that president Buhari is not the real Buhari, but that the president is one Jubril Al-Sudaani, who is his doppelganger.

We have not forgotten and history has not forgotten what one of the governors of a state in Nigeria said – previously – that he would kill himself if President Buhari came back alive from his medical trip at the time!

“…profound is the word that comes out of their mouths; they only speak a lie." (Kahf:5). "...And Allah has overwhelming power to implement His design although most people do not know that" (Yuusuf:21). "

We must be patient with the affairs of our country and the negligence of our leaders, and that we Muslims should not say anything but good, and return to Allah by praying for the country, the citizens and the president, because we have no other country but Nigeria, and if we all want to run away because of the constricted economy and insecurity, and we all run away from Nigeria, so who would fix it? And if the citizens of the foreign countries where people run to had fled their own countries too, will anyone flee to them?
