THE HIJRAH: Lessons and Exhortation :::Khutba 9th Muharram 1439 (29th September, 2017)

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

BEING THE SECOND SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM 9TH MUHARRAM, 1439AH (29TH SEPTEMBER, 2017CE)

THE HIJRAH: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS
All praises are due to Allah Who made the noble Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah, a new start for the construction of the Islamic state, as well as honour,  success and blessing for Islam and Muslims. Allah says:

﴿ وَالسَّابِقُونَ الْأَوَّلُونَ مِنَ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوهُمْ بِإِحْسَانٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ وَأَعَدَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي تَحْتَهَا الْأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا ذَلِكَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ ﴾  {التَّوْبَة :9\100 }

 “And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct – Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.”(9: 100). I testify there is no god but Allah alone, He has no associate, and I testify that Muhammad (pbuh) is the servant of Allah and His messenger. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on him (pbuh), his families, pious companions and all those who follow his guidance till the day of recompense.

As to what follow,
O people, I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah, for that is the divine recommendation to every intelligent believer and the best provision for the hereafter. Allah says:

﴿وَتَزَوَّدُوا فَإِنَّ خَيْرَ الزَّادِ التَّقْوَىوَاتَّقُونِ يَاأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ ﴾ {البقرة: 2\179}

“And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding. (2: 197)

Today’s sermon is titled “THE HIJRAH: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS” in conformity with the occasion of crossing to the new hijrah year 1439AH.

The word Hijrah means to move from a place to another, including movement of persons in search of provision. (Ma’jamul- waseet)

Technically, it refers to the migration of the noble Prophet (pbuh) and his companions from Makkah to Madinah, as a result of difficulties they faced from idolaters and in fulfillment of Allah’s command.

Hijrah – tradition of the messengers of Allah (A.S)

Hirah- to migrate in the cause of Allah is an old tradition. Thus the Prophet’s migration (pbuh) was never an innovation, in the context of Prophets’ defense of their ideology or faith. The Prophet (pbuh) left his birthplace for the sake of the mission, in search of a fertile and safe abode for its propagation and development.

Under the same context, earlier prophets embarked upon the same journey, neglecting barren lands which potentially hinder on its path and expose it to most difficult experience. There are several accounts of the migration of the Prophets and their people in the Holy Qur’an, to serve as example that migration is God’s tradition for the cause of dawah. In order that believers could derive appropriate example whenever they face challenges and threats to their faith and honour.

2- Conflict between truth and falsehood is age-long and extensive:

Almighty Allah say:

“[They are] those who have been evicted from their homes without right – only because they say, “Our Lord is Allah.” And were it not that Allah checks the people, some by means of others, there would have been demolished monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques in which the name of Allah is much mentioned. And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.” (22: 40).

However, the end of the faceoff is known as explained in another verse thus:

ولكن هذا الصراع معلوم العاقبة : ﴿ كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ ﴾ {المجادلة: 58\21}

“Allah has written, “I will surely overcome, I and My messengers.” Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.” (58: 21)

3- Plot against dawah by her enemies is a continuously phenomenon: It could either be through imprisonment, murder, exile or banishment. It is imperative therefore, that the da’iyah rely on Allah, trust in Him, and know that evil plotters always bear the brunt of their evil. Allah says:

“And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.” (8: 30)

Money is another weapon usually used by antagonists of dawah to cunningly deceive weaklings and feeble hearted in their effort to exterminate the propagation of Islam. Regarding the Prophet, (pbuh) the unbelievers placed a prize money of hundred camel for whoever could produce any of the two emigrants- the Prophet (pbuh) and Abubakr, dead or alive. The greedy ones commenced effort in this quest, but one of them- Suroqah returned from the effort as a believer, and contributed to mislead other searchers. This is one of the ways Allah protects His true servants. Allah says:

“Indeed, those who disbelieve spend their wealth to avert [people] from the way of Allah. So they will spend it; then it will be for them a [source of] regret; then they will be overcome. And those who have disbelieved – unto Hell they will be gathered.” (8: 36)

4- Belief in physical miracles: The Prophet’s migration consisted of some physical miracles which are evidences for Allah protection on him. This includes the spider cobweb at the cave’s entrance, the encounter with Ummu Ma’bad, the Suroqah experience couple with the promise made to him of wearing bracelets of Chosroes. Therefore, the da’iyah must not deny these miracles rather remember it provided they are established by the Sunnah of the Prophet, and they have the responsibility to call people to it as signs of his prophethood.

5- Permissibility of seeking support from trustworthy kafir: It is permissible for the Duat- those calling to the path of Allah- to seek assistance of non-believers as long as they trust them in the context of the required job. The Prophet- pbuh- and Abubakr employed the service of an pagan, who was to guide them in the mission of migration, and they both entrusted their ride unto him and agreed that he should meet them by the cave of Thawr. These are delicate issues they committed to him. Without doubt, they trusted him and this is a enough a proof that an unbeliever or a disobedient person or an un-aligning person to our cause, could posses some qualities which might necessitate the trust for them. For instance, through the bond of relatives, friendship, neighbourhood, or good act done to him sometimes, or where some of them are blessed with some basic credible behavior; such as trust, love for charitable endeavour etc. Issues like this are discretional, therefore it should be left for the da’iyah’s experience and understanding of people.

6- The role of women in the hijrah: Many women took great part in the hijrah event. Such as ‘Aisha bintAbubakr, who related the account of the migration. Likewise was UmmuSalamah, the patient emigrant, and Asmaa who play the role of providing food and drink for them in the cave. She also suffered a resounding slap from Abu Jahl which result in the fall-off of one of her earrings. This was because she told him she was did not the whereabout of her father- Abubakr. Another role of hers was how she pacified the heart of her blind grandfather- Abu Qahaafah, who came to her  and said: “I know he has deprived you of his wealth and person” But she refused that and told the grandfather to touch what Abubakr has left for them, to this he commended him for leaving such. However, Abubakr did not leave anything, she only did that to calm the old man without engaging in lies. In the true sense, he left for them sound faith in Allah which is immovable in the wave of trial and challenge. By this feat, she demonstrates an exemplary model for all Muslim women and girls of subsequent generations.

7- Discharge of trusts to their rightful owners: The idolaters, regardless of their enmity and plot to kill the Prophet (pbuh)- continually keep their valuables with him and not with other person. This shows they are quite away of his trustworthiness and honesty, however, their enmity is borne out of their pride, arrogance against the truth, as described in this verse:

(﴿ قَدْ نَعْلَمُ إِنَّهُ لَيَحْزُنُكَ الَّذِي يَقُولُونَ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَكِنَّ الظَّالِمِينَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ ﴾ (سورة الأنعام: الآية33))

We know that you, [O Muhammad], are saddened by what they say. And indeed, they do not call you untruthful, but it is the verses of Allah that the wrongdoers reject. (6:33)

To demonstrate the sacredness of trust, the Prophet also seconded Ali bnTalib to stay back while he set out for the migration in order to return the materials to the owners. It should be noted that, the situation of threat to his life have not given him the reason to squander people’s property unjustly.

8- Giving is better than receiving: The Prophet have not taken the ride from Abubakr free except with a price though as debt on him. Hence callers to the path of Allah should realize they should always be source of offering to others not dependent on them to receive. Allah says:

“And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds.” (26: 109)

Those who are vanguards of dawah and preach it should not seek from anyone but Allah (swt), because this contradicts what they preach. People are usually accustomed to understand the language of practicality than words expressed or articulated. Historically, Muslims became backward and humiliated when every means of calling to the path of Allah was subjected to material acquisition of wealth and every person seek for status. The mission lacks turns to material based job, which lacks the spirit and vitality, enjoining good become staffs, speakers on pulpit became staffs, and Imams became staffs.

Voices the discharge messages out of the fear of God and the hope for His pleasure, other than voices which discharge only to gain some money, and whenever the fund stops coming, then the voices seize. It is often said that the professional female mourner cannot be perfect in the act of wailing as the one who lost a child. This is really the reason why the impact of most of these preaching and so on is not felt and people are far from the right path.

9- To disregard people’s wealth: Whe the Prophet, peace be upon him pardoned Suroqah, he offered him assistance saying: “This is my quiver (for arrows) take a share from it, also you will pass by my cattle of camels and sheep at such and such place, take from it as you need.” But the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said to him: “I do not need them”. Therefore, when preachers exhibit modesty and disregard materials with men, they will gain their love, otherwise people with desert them. This is a profound lesson for callers to God.

10- Unrivaled military intelligence:
The impact of the prophetic training for military intelligence shown in Abubakr and Ali bin Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with them. For Abubakr, may Allah be pleased with him when he wanted to migrate to Madinah, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to him: (do not be hasty, perhaps God will provide you a companion). Immediately, he began planning for the Migration, he purchased two rides, detailed his family members for the service of the Prophet, (pbuh) … when he was informed by the Prophet that Allah Has authorized him to go for the migration, he busted into tears of joy.  Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her said: I swear by Allah, I never thought before that day that anyone could cry out of joy until I saw Abubakr cry that day, it is the height of good news of joy; that joy turns into crying.”

Abubakr was joyous to be in the company and service of the Prophet for this journey. He demonstrated love, care and was conscious not to allow any danger come to him or be captured by the idolaters. During the journey, a man asked him about the identity of the Prophet to which he replied: “This is a guide who guides me on the path.” This shows his level of intelligence and security consciousness.

The role of Ali bn Abi Talib who was instructed to sleep on the bed of the Prophet (pbuh) demonstrates as well his commitment to the cause, putting his life on the line for that of the leader of their mission.

The Second Sermon
Praise be to Allah alone the Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, his household, companions and all those who follow his footsteps till the day of judgement.

Dear servants of Allah, of the favours of Allah upon us is that He made this week a complete week of voluntary fasts- From yesterday’s Thursday till next week’s Thursday. Thursday, yesterday- 8/01/1439 (28/09/2017) is a day when deeds are presented before Allah, Friday, 09/01/1439 (29/09/2017) is the ninth day of Muharram- Taasu’aa, Saturday, 10/01/1439 (30/09/2017) is the tenth day of Muharram known as the Day of ‘Aashura, Sunday(01/10/2017)11/01/1439, a day after ‘Aashura which is encouraged to fast in order to differentiate Muslims’ fast from that of the Jews’. Then is Monday, 12/01/1439 (02/10/2017)a day of fast weekly when deeds are taken up before Allah, while Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday stand as the three white days for fasting of the lunar month, as the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of the lunar month.Next Thursday (05/10/2017)
15/01/1439 has two honours; that of being a day wherein deeds are taken up to Allah, and that of being one the white days of the lunar month.

Some of the virtue of the month of Muharram is as stated in the following hadith: Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: ‘The best of fasting after Ramadhan is fasting Allah’s month of Muharram, and the best of solat after the compulsory is the qiyaamul-layl “ [Muslim]. The hadith describes two things: the best of voluntary fast and the best of voluntary prayer.

Secondly, the death of the former supreme- guide of the Muslim Brotherhood:

The death of Muhammad Mahdi Akef, the former general guide of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, behind bars on Friday, September 22, 2017 has finally liberated him from the shackles of Egypt’s authoritarian military regime.

The 89-year-old top leader was the first to win the title of “ex-supreme guide” since no other leader of the Muslim Brotherhood’s top post left office while still alive. Yet, despite his old age and multitude of health problems the military-led government incarcerated him soon after the military coup in July 2013 that toppled the first elected civilian president.
The coup authorities had since refused to heed repeated calls by lawyers and Human Rights organisation that demanded Akef’s release. The military court that sent him to jail alleged that he was found guilty of showing contempt for the country’s judiciary that was said to be his crime.
Akef was born in 1928, the same year in which Hassan al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He joined the group at the age of 12 in 1940 and remained a loyal member until he passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017.

Thirdly is the death of the Chief Imam of the Lagos State Central Mosque, Sheikh Garuba Ibrahim Akinola, who died on Sunday, 24/9/2017, at the age of 79 years. Sheikh Ibrahim is the ninth Chief Imam of the Lagos Central Mosque. He became the Chief Imam of the Lagos State Central Mosque on 30th July, 2000, during the regime of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the governor of Lagos, who presented him with “staff of the office”. After the death of the former Chief Imam,Alhajj Al-HadiAladeIbrahim. Among those who showered encomium on him at his burial included, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Lagos State Governor- Mr Akinwunmi Ambode among others.

Oh Allah accept our fast, prayers, bowing and prostration. O Allah ease for us Your remembrance, gratitude to You and sound worship. O Allah make the Qur’an the succor to our hearts, light to our faces, remover of our grief and sorrow. O Allah show us the truth and grant us the wherewithal to follow it, show us falsehood and grant us the wherewithal to desist. O Allah forgive the believers; men and women, and the Muslim men and women, both the living and the deceased, You are All- hearing, most near, answerer of prayers. O Allah make this nation- Nigeria peaceful, safe, generous, with abundant welfare, and all other Muslim nations.
