BEING THE THIRD SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF RABI’UL AAKHIR DATED 21ST RABI’UL AKHIR 1443AH (26TH NOVEMBER, 2021)

THE ISLAMIC UNITY; AN IMPERATIVE NECESSITY

Praise be to the one who said in His exalted book, and he is the most honest of speakers: (وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ") “And hold firmly to the rope1 of Allah all together and do not become divided.” (Al Imran 103):. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner, to Him belong power, and praise. He gives lives and takes lives, and with Him is the power and He has power over all things. And I bear witness that our Prophet and Master Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, Allah opened by his message blind eyes, deaf ears and sealed hearts. O Allah, enliven us upon his Sunnah, and take our lives while living on his path, and resurrect us among his group those whom You have bestowed favors, among the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous. An excellent are those as companions.

Thereafter:

I admonish you and myself on the fear of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime. Allah has commanded it in His precise revelation, where He says: (:" يَا أَيُّهَا الّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُونَّ إِلَّا وَأّنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ) “O you who believe, fear Allah as He should be feared, and do not die unless as Muslims.

O Muslims: Allah, the Almighty says: (وَاعْتَصِمُواْ بِحَبْلِ اللّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلاَ تَفَرَّقُواْ وَاذْكُرُواْ نِعْمَةَ اللّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنتُمْ أَعْدَاء فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُم بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا وَكُنتُمْ عَلَىَ شَفَا حُفْرَةٍ مِّنَ النَّارِ فَأَنقَذَكُم مِّنْهَا كَذَلِكَ يُبَيِّنُ اللّهُ لَكُمْ آيَاتِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَهْتَدُونَ) “And hold firmly to the rope1 of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you – when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.” ( [Al-Imran: 103 ].

This noble verse includes a divine command to all Muslims, that they should hold fast to His rope, and unite around His call. They must also adhere to the Book of their Lord and the Sunnah of their Prophet – peace and blessings be upon him – and to be one row in a coherent unity that brings them together; because unity is the cause of their strength, victory and might.

Unfortunately, while we find the reality of Muslims today in contrary to that, where we find disagreement and hatred.

The matter of the Muslims is amazing! Their God is one, their Messenger is one, their Qur’an is one, their Sunnah is one, the language of their Qur’an and their Sunnah is one, yet they are torn nations, divided peoples, warring sects, conflicting groups, and different sects, even though Islam calls them to unity in a clear frankness that does not need explanation, nor interpretation, nor intellectual deduction (ijtihad).

O Muslims: The Islamic Ummah is a great nation, it includes the meeting place of continents, the source of civilizations, and the landing site of (divine) messages. Allah has distinguished it with two best qualities:

1- Al-khayriyyah: it is the best of nations as long as it adheres to the Book (Qur’an) of its Lord and the Sunnah of its Prophet – peace and blessings of Allah be upon him: (كُنتُمْ خَيْرَ أُمَّةٍ أُخْرِجَتْ لِلنَّاسِ تَأْمُرُونَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَتَنْهَوْنَ عَنِ الْمُنكَرِ وَتُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللّهِ) “You are the best nation produced [as an example] for mankind. You enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and believe in Allah. If only the People of the Scripture had believed, it would have been better for them. Among them are believers, but most of them are defiantly disobedient..” [Al-Amran: 110]

2- Wasatiyah: The moderation here is not the point between two points, but the best: (وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِّتَكُونُواْ شُهَدَاء عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا) And thus We have made you a median [i.e., just] community that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you. [Al-Baqara: 143].

Among what confirms this meaning is the Almighty’s saying in Surat Al-Qalam: (قَالَ أَوْسَطُهُمْ) “The most moderate of them said. And in the hadith: “Al-Firdaus is in the middle of Paradise,” and it is the highest in rank.

This is the Islamic nation that has always been the pioneer, that the East and the West have bowed to in reverence and respect. Why is it that it has become today among the rank of the Third World, among the developing countries?! If there was a One hundred and tenth world, it would have fall under it.!

Our Messenger – peace and blessings be upon him – has warned Muslims of an international conspiracy being hatched against them, in which the forces of the whole world will collide against Muslims who have become an easy prey for every greedy.

This is confirmed by the reality, where the East and the West, the Right and the Left gathered against us; based on his saying, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, he said: “The people will soon summon one another to attack you as people when eating invite others to share their dish. Someone asked: Will that be because of our small numbers at that time? He replied: No, you will be numerous at that time: but you will be scum and rubbish like that carried down by a torrent, and Allah will take fear of you from the breasts of your enemy and cast wahn (enervation) into your hearts. Someone asked: What is wahn (enervation). Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): He replied: Love of the world and dislike of death. " (Narrated by Abu Dawood in his Sunan (2/10 2))

These criminal schemes are aimed to break up the Arab and Islamic nations, and make them weak and scattered states. Will our enemies succeed in that?!

Therefore, it incumbent upon the Ummah to unite its ranks, in order to thwart these hateful colonial projects that are working to fragment and weaken the Ummah.

O Muslims: The Islamic nation is most in need of unity, love, solidarity, mutual support, close ranks, and unification of declaration, especially in these difficult circumstances that the Palestinian people are going through, and at this difficult time in the lives of our people, where the holy city is exposed to the danger of Judaization.

Ibn ‘Umar narrated: " ‘Umar delivered a Khutbah to us at Al-Jabiyah. He said: ‘O you people! Indeed I have stood among you as the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) stood among us, and he said: "I order you (to stick to) my Companions, then those who come after them, then those who come after them. Then lying will spread until a man will take an oath when no oath was sought from him, and a witness will testify when his testimony was not sought. Behold! A man is not alone with a woman but the third of them is Ash-Shaitan. Adhere to the Jama’ah, beware of separation, for indeed Ash-Shaitan is with one, and he is further away from two. Whoever wants the best place in Paradise, then let him stick to the Jama’ah. Whoever rejoices with his good deeds and grieves over his evil deeds, then that is the believer among you"(Tirmidhi)

Nu’man b. Bashir reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: The similitude of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever.

THE SECOND SERMON

All praises are due to Allah, may His peace and blessings be upon our leader, Muhammad, his household, companions and all believers.

The United Nations have designated the twenty-sixth day of November every year as the International Day of Elimination of Violence against Women.

Violence against women from the Islamic perspective:

The act of violence needs two basic elements: the abuser and the abused, where the abuser practices coercive acts that pose danger to the abused, desecrate his dignity, and deprive him of his freedom. Islam has legislated ordained punishments and prescribed penalties to guard the women and protect the society from these practices. It is the responsibility of religious and legal institutions to work in order to correct the misconceptions about violence against women. Islam has legislated laws that protect women from violence, as it gave them the right to ask for divorce,[1] even if spanking is legitimate in the event of the woman’s disobedience, and that is a non- severe spanking, which comes as the last solution. Surely, it is better for a Muslim to avoid it, as spanking has been legislated for the purposes of discipline, and not for the purposes of leading to hospitalization or for seeking revenge.[2]

Psychological violence against women: Islam commands to stop harming a woman, to tolerate her, to be patient when she is angry, and to treat her kindly. In all of this, following the example of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, where the rights of women in Islam are not limited to material rights, but rather go beyond that to the psychological rights, which we mentioned above. Allah says: (يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا يَحِلُّ لَكُمْ أَنْ تَرِثُوا النِّسَاءَ كَرْهًا وَلَا تَعْضُلُوهُنَّ لِتَذْهَبُوا بِبَعْضِ مَا آتَيْتُمُوهُنَّ إِلَّا أَنْ يَأْتِينَ بِفَاحِشَةٍ مُبَيِّنَةٍ) " O you who have believed, it is not lawful for you to inherit women by compulsion.1 And do not make difficulties for them in order to take [back] part of what you gave them2 unless they commit a clear immorality [i.e., adultery]. " () and the Allah command men to live with their wives in kindness, He says:( وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ فَإِنْ كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا) " And live with them in kindness. For if you dislike them – perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good. " The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him said: " "Treat women nicely, for they are but captives with you over whom you have no power than that, …", he also said: "Be gentle with the glass vessels (i.e. the women).”

Finally, it’s worthy to mention the case of the molestation of a sister in hijab that happened in Ladoke Akintola University, (LAUTECH) Ogbomosho, Oyo State, on Wednesday, 18th November, 2021. According to the report, the man who is the Dean of faculty of nursing in the University, Professor Ajibade Lawal allegedly opened the face (niqab) of a female Muslim nursing student and harassing others while addressing the new students without any justifiable reason other than the fact that she is a niqobite, in compliance with the injunction of her lord and in following her Prophet (peace be upon him). It is amazing! Someone claiming to be a Muslim, a Professor in a University could perpetrate this kind of effrontery!

However, during this week, the harassing Professor recognized and regretted his action, he also repented unto Allah, and sought pardon from those he offended, and the Muslims of Oyo State and the entire Muslim Ummah. We beseech Allah to forgive us all and gather us all into His mercy, He is The Forgiving, The Merciful. This is one of the qualities of the believers, because the reminder of Allah’s punishment is the strongest and best for man in correcting mistakes. A living soul, when it remembers the severity of the punishment of Allah at the point of committing a sin, it regrets and seeks forgiveness. Allah has confirmed that in the magnificent revelation, in suratu Al-‘imraan verse 135, as He says: (والذين إذا فعلوا فاحشة أو ظلموا أنفسهم ذكروا الله فاستغفروا لذنوبهم ومن يغفر الذنوب إلا الله ولم يصروا على ما فعلوا وهم يعلمون) “And those who, when they commit an immorality or wrong themselves (by transgression), remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins- and who can forgive sins except Allah? And (who) do not persist in what they have done while they know”.

And this is a clear proof that our strength is in our unity, because the Muslims declared in one voice the support for the hijab and in support for the obligation of honouring the rights of the woman in her choice the hijab in obedience to her lord
