The Messenger: Our Role Model

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

BEING THE FIRST SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF R/AWWAL 2/R. AWWAL/1438AH (2/DEC/2016CE)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD- PEACE BE UPON HIM; OUR MODEL

Praise be to Allah, the lord of the worlds, Allah says: ({ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيراً } (الأحزاب:21).) “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. ” (33: 21) . We praise and thank Him for His grace and honour and beseech Him for more. I testify there is no god but Allah alone, the compassionate, the merciful, the generous, the Perpetual Forgiver. I testify that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger, his beloved and chosen one among his creation, the leader of the children of Adam.  He is the leader of the messengers, the seal of prophets, the mercy offered to the universe, the illuminating lamp. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense.

Dear Muslims, I enjoin you and I to fear Allah in accordance with the verse:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ ( آل عمران : 102 )

” O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].” (3: 102) .
Today being the first sermon in the month of Rabi’ul- Awwal in which the prophet (pbuh) was born we consider it appropriate to elucidate the virtues of the Prophet (pbuh) under the topic: The messenger- pbuh- our model.

Dear faithful, exemplary model is the essential foundation of society, which is a necessity in life, because they embodied the exemplary ideals for people to emulate, and acquire from them positive features, noble values and high morals, in order to have a gracious, pleasant and virtuous life experience, both with Allah- the Exalted in the performance of worship and obligations, or with self, purifying and training the soul on morality, or with family and children in order to build a cohesive family, or with the community around him in matters of religion and the world.

To this end, Allah- the Exalted made the messenger- Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him a role model and who embodies the religion sent with him, so that people could live practical experience in this religion as a reality, far from being abstract ideas. The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him was the best role model for the Ummah in the application of this religion, combining words with action, and linking theory and practice, presenting the meanings with vivid facts, thus people were guided by his work before his saying, and by his action before his knowledge. He stands before his companions as a living embodiment of his dawah- call, and an explicit example of its principles.

Therefore, the model which we must emulate is that which Allah presented to us as example: Allah says:

“Here has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.” (33: 21)

The Prophet – peace be upon him urged to good morals and was the best of mankind in good characters and etiquette. The Messenger of Allah as well established that he was sent only to perfect good morals. In the days of ignorance there were good morals however, the Prophet came to perfect it; by reforming what was corrupted of it, and praising what was virtuous, and urging people to it when he said: “I have been raised to perfect good character.” (Narrated by Imam Ahmad)

There is no doubt that the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him was the greatest man in human history, Allah says: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” (68: 4) This is the honour granted the Prophet both in this world and the hereafter as said in the hadith: “Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) as saying: I shall be pre-eminent amongst the descendants of Adam on the Day of Resurrection, the first to be out of the grave, and I will be the first intercessor and the first whose intercession will be accepted (by Allah).” (Muslim)

The Messenger is our model:

Everyone- Muslims and non-Muslims, past and present- have testified to the fact that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him is the best of mankind, and they extol his virtues and characters. There is no human being that can be placed in comparison with the him, peace be upon him; he is the first in all matters; including piety, courage, generosity, compassion, tolerance, … and all kinds of good manners.

For this reason, Allah made him a role model to mankind: ({ لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَنْ كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيراً } (الأحزاب:21).) “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often. ” (33: 21) .

He was the most generous. He display exemplary model in the aspect of bravery “Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “When hardship approached on the day of Badr we were on guard around the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and he was the strongest among the people, and there was none closer to the polytheists than him”. At the same time he was a role model in leniency; “His leniency precedes his ignorance, and hardness of ignorance towards him would not increase him in anything except leniency”. In honesty and trust he was referred to as the honest and trustworthy.

His companions, would describe him as: “Most generous of people in giving, most accommodating in heart, most truthful in word, most lenient in nature, most honorable in companionship, he who sees him intuitively fears him, and he who relates with him loves him, and the describer of him would say: I have not seen the like of him before and after (seeing him)”.

Emulating the Prophet (pbuh):

This is essential because he- peace be upon him is our model on every matter, he never leave an issue- big or small except that he explained to us the right way to deal with it; so that we would be steadfast on the Islamic law, and not deviate and be perished. The prophet, peace be upon him said: “I have not left any of the things Allah commanded you of except that I commanded you of them, and I have not left any of the things Allah forbids you of except that I have forbid you against them ».

In order to actualize this benefit of role model, Allah commands us to accept what the Prophet brought: “And whatever the Messenger has given you – take; and what he has forbidden you – refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty”(59: 7).

Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) lived for twenty-three years after the revelation, where all matters required to establish the society and the state took place. This included the thirteen years spent in Makkah- a place where disbelief was in control. The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him was calling people secretly and openly, and the companions were hiding their faith; the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him met diverse varieties of people; some of them had their hearts soften with the words of Allah, while some others had hearts hardened like the stone, some others were skeptical and fearful.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him invited men, women and children, and faced reactions from the Quraish ranging from denial to mocking, cynicism, and creating confusion to his call, and open hostility,  persecution and assault on him, and torturing of his companions.

In Madinah, the Prophet, peace be upon him built a state with different set of people and races in contrast to a community filled with conflicts and hypocrites.

The Prophet, peace be upon him established the constitution for the state, and her dealing with other states and tribes, he sent messages to kings, he fought wars, using the trust in Allah and tactical planning and comprehensive preparation.

Treaties of the Prophet (pbuh)

The Prophet- peace be upon him did not like or intend wars, but as last resort, thus he used every possible means to prevent war or delay its pace, and one of such means is the treaties and agreements.

The Prophet – peace be upon him had treaties with all sects that the Muslims could had agreement with. He had covenant with the Jews and the Christians and the Pagans; teaching us how treaties are, the foundations, such as: how to compose a treaty to preserve the interests of Islam and Muslims, and the compromises that could be made in order to achieve the treaty, and elements that cannot be compromised, and the need to fulfill the treaty, and when the treaty can be considered canceled. All these matters the Prophet taught us in his history.

And we could discover that there is nothing in the field of political treaties in history and present that is as detailed, just, equitable, and kind as that of his treaty- peace be upon him.

At this juncture, it is imperative for us to examine the treaties of Prophet, peace be upon him so that new approach of the Prophet’s biography could be opened to us and we could follow the example of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him in all matters of our lives as Allah commanded us.
SECOND KHUTBAH

All praise is due to Allah, the severe in punishment, owner of abundance, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, He says in the Qur’an thus:

By the sky containing great stars ( 2 )   And [by] the promised Day ( 3 )   And [by] the witness and what is witnessed, ( 4 )   Cursed were the companions of the trench ( 5 )   [Containing] the fire full of fuel,

( 6 )   When they were sitting near it ( 7 )   And they, to what they were doing against the believers, were witnesses. ( 8 )   And they resented them not except because they believed in Allah, the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy, ( 9 )   To whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, over all things, is Witness. ( 10 )   Indeed, those who have tortured the believing men and believing women and then have not repented will have the punishment of Hell, and they will have the punishment of the Burning Fire.

Dear faithful, we would like to use this opportunity to tell you about a severe disaster that befell the state of Israel last week. An incident in which is a lesson for men of understanding, Allah says: “We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness? ( 54 )   Unquestionably, they are in doubt about the meeting with their Lord. Unquestionably He is, of all things, encompassing.” (41: 53- 54)

When the enemies of Allah transgress and rebell, He show them that He is the severe in punishment and that He has power over all things: “Indeed, the Qur’an is a decisive statement, ( 14 )   And it is not amusement. ( 15 )   Indeed, they are planning a plan, ( 16 )   But I am planning a plan. ( 17 )   So allow time for the disbelievers. Leave them awhile.” (86: 13- 17)

Dear Muslims, what is the disaster? It was the fire incident that raged for six consecutive days befalling Israel and ravaged about half of the country, on Tuesday, 22nd November, 2016 – Sunday 27 November, 2016. Israel declared war against her Creator, her provider, the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Israel came with a law to prohibit the call to prayer- Adhan, to the five daily prayers in the holy lands of Allah: “Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.” (17: 1)

One of the members of the House of Representatives stood up in the house while in session and made the adhan and the whole house was amazed raging fire due to the adhan they heard and one their satelite caught fire as well.

We received the news on Friday that the fire had gutted 17 states on Friday 25 November, 2016 and lasted till Sunday.  Israel sought help from neighboring countries to save her from crisis. The fire was a retribution from Allah set against His enemies on earth as deterrent to them and a warning regarding a tougher punishment.

In addition, we recommend that the Nigerian federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari should not ban the importation of rice to Nigeria yet, rather to prevent the export from Nigeria to foreign nations. Rice is a staple food in Nigeria for everyone; rich and poor, and its price is now very expensive. Our local production is not enough for the citizens. The government should be more concerned with agriculture till we could be able to satisfy the local demand for all produces not rice alone. The populace as well should be more concerned with agriculture, we blessed with good and fertile land. Government should support farmers adequately.

Finally, we commend the Lagos state government on the newly promulgated law which seeks for the execution of kidnappers whose victims die in their custody. We have been reading the verse on punishment for those spreading evil and corruption in the land thus:

“Indeed, the penalty for those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger and strive upon earth [to cause] corruption is none but that they be killed or crucified or that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides or that they be exiled from the land. That is for them a disgrace in this world; and for them in the Hereafter is a great punishment,” (5: 33)
