In the Name of Allah of the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

BEING THE FOURTH SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM DATED

3RD SOFAR 1443 AH (10TH SEPTEMBER, 2021 CE)

THE ROLE OF ETHICAL CONTROLS IN ACHIEVING FOOD SECURITY IN ISLAM

All Praises belong to Allah, the Lord of the Universe, who created the children of Adam and provided them the blessings of various kinds of fruits, grains, animal and lawful drinks. He is the One Who says in his Noble Book: “And We have certainly honored the children of Adam and carried them on the land and sea and provided for them of the good things and preferred them over much of what We have created, with [definite] preference.” (Al-Israa: 70). We praise Him, the Almighty and thank him. We believe and trust in him, and we seek refuge in him from the evils of our souls and our bad deeds. Whoever is guided by Allah, there is none that can mislead him and whoever is left to go astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partner. Glorified and Exalted He is above what they associate with Him. I bear witness also that Muhammad is his slave  And His Truthful Messenger, may the Blessings and Peace of Allah be upon him, his family and his companions who judged with the Truth and so they were just.

Thereafter,

Oh servants of Allah! I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah Almighty, secretly and openly, as it is the desire goal of all acts of worship and recommended good deeds, according to the Words of Allah: “O you people, worship your Lord who created you and those before you, that ye may pious” (Al-Baqarah: 21).

Brothers in Faith! This is the first meeting in the month of Safar , the second month of the Islamic Hijra and we are still on the subject of security, starting with the concept of security and its virtues, and security regulations in the society and then the impact of faith in Allah Almighty in the achievement of psychological security in the society. Today, in-shaa Allah Ta’alah, our topic will revolve around: The role of Ethical controls in achieving food security in Islam:

Dear honoured Muslims! The interest of Islam to provide food for humans and its ways of production is evident in the Book of Allah Almighty, and in the Sunnah of His noble Prophet, and it so what we will explain in detail with reference to verses of the Quraan and the Hadiths, and finally give the formula prescribed by the Quraan to achieve food security through the plan of prophet Yusuf (Peace and Blessings be upon him).

Food security through the Glorious Quran

Brothers in Islam! What is meant by food security from the Shari’ah perspective is: “to ensure the continued flow of the usual level of essential halaal food for consumption in the society at any period of time.” If the society is enjoying a situation of economic progress, the level may rise to the extent of luxuries, and this is fine as long as we apply the condition of everything being halaal, in accordance with the Words of Allah: “Say: Who has forbidden the adornments of Allah and good things of living that He has made for His slaves” (Al-‘aaraf :32).

Servants of Allah! To show the extent of the interest of the Glorious Quran in food security and related elements of agriculture and food production, we will mention some of the verses that indicate this. They are:

The relationship of food security to social and political security:

The Words of Allah Ta’alah: “And when Ibraheem said, “My Lord, make this a safe country, and provide for its people with fruits, whosoever among them believeth in Allah and the Last Day.” Brothers in faith! Ibraheem prayed for children and other things, with security and a good live, as Mecca and it’s surrounding at that time was suffering from poverty, with no water nor any plants, but Allah blessed it’s surroundings and all types of fruits grow there.

The relationship of food with faith in – and obedience to – Allah

Dear honoured Muslims, Allah Ta’alah has said: “And He has made subservient to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all of them belong to you“.  The noble verse makes clear what has been subjugated for man, of the planets, the mountains, the seas, rivers and all that you benefit from, out of His Favour, Benevolence, and His Grace, that is, it is Hegtom Him alone and no one has a share in that. (Ibn Katheer).

And also the Words of Allah Ta’alah: “And I said, ask forgiveness of your Lord, he indeed is Oft-Forgiving. He will shower you with abundant rain. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers.” [Nuuh: 10-12].

Food security through the Prophetic Sunnah

Servants of Allah, we find noble Sunnah of the prophet and hadiths that call for the building of the earth and the exploitation of its resources to achieve food security. As a means of attaining goodness, a man asked the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him): “Which Islaam is the best? He said: Giving food, and saying the tasleem (greeting) to those you know and those that you do not know”. [Muslim].  In the hadith he encouraged the giving of food, generosity, and taking care of things that is to the benefit of muslims, and greeting (tasleem) those you knew and those you do not know, and sincerity in the good deeds to Allah Ta’alah. (Abu Daawud).

And among his Sunnah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him), is that he used to seek refuge from hunger. It has been narrated from Abu Hurairah that he said: The Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say: “Oh Allah, I seek refuge in You from hunger, for it is an evil bed-fellow, and I seek refuge in You from treachery, for it is an evil inner trait”  (Muslim).

On the authority of Aa’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, that the Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Seek sustenance of the things held up inside the earth.” (Al-Tabarani)

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah, that the Messenger of Allah (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “The best charity is what is given out of surplus, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand, and begin with those under your care. His wife says, spend on me. The mother of his son says: to who do you leave me to depend? And his servant says: feed me and employ me.”

Dear Muslims, for want of space and time, we will mention the ethical rules to achieve food security in Islam without lengthy details. They are:

  1. The regulation of what is halaal and what is haram: Allah the Almighty said: “And He makes lawful for them the good things and prohibits for them the bad” (Al-A’raf:157).
  2. The regulation of moderation and the management of consumption: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Start with your own self and give charity to it, and then if there is something left over from it, give it to your own family, and then if there is anything left over from your family, give it to your relatives, and if there is something left after giving to your relatives, give it to such and such, saying ‘to whoever is in front of you, to whoever is to your right hand side, and to whoever is to your left hand side.” (Muslim).
  3. The regulation of the prohibition of extravagance and luxury: Allaah Ta’alah said: “Oh children of Adam, take your adornment [i.e., wear your clothing] at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.” (Al-‘aaraf :31).
  4. The regulation of prohibiting miserliness: Allah Ta’alah says: “And let not those who [greedily] withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty ever think that it is better for them. Rather, it is worse for them. Their necks will be encircled by what they withheld on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs the heritage of the heavens and the earth. And Allah, of what you do, is [fully] Aware.” (Al-Imran:180)

I say all this that I have said and I ask forgiveness from Allah Almighty for me and for you. Ask forgiveness of Him and repent unto Him, for He indeed is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.

THE SECOND SERMON

All Praise are due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, Who says in His Exalted book: (: (وَلَا تَقْتُلُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ إِنَّ اللهَ كَانَ بِكُمْ And do not kill yourselves [or one another]. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful. [Suratun-Nisaa: 29]. We praise Him, glory be unto Him, and thank Him. We believe and trust in him. We beseech peace and blessings upon the best of Allah’s creation, our leader and master Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.

Thereafter,

Dear servants of Allah, it is worth noting that today, September 10, 2021, the United Nations celebrates the WORLD SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY, as its annual practice.

We must explain to people the position of Islam regarding this ugly act. Suicide in Islam is to deliberately kill oneself, it is considered a crime and a sin on the perpetrator, and it is a forbidden act by consensus of the scholars, with both revealed and intellectual evidence. Allah, the Almighty said: (ولا تقتلوا أنفسكم) “And do not kill yourselves”. The soul belongs to Allah, and life is endowed by Allah to man. He (man) does not have the right to hasten death by taking his soul because that is regarded as interfering in what he does not possess.

Preservation of life is one of the five basic necessities of the Islamic law. The teachings of the Islamic religion affirms that man in this life is in a transient stage, and that the real life is the afterlife in which man will be rewarded on the day mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds. And that this life is a period of test; meaning: a place of testing and trial, and on this basis, Islam urges patience in obedience to Allah and in the confronting the challenges of life, and all the troubles that faces man, with the spirit of faith in Allah and the Last Day, in addition to submission to Allah’s command and destiny, without entertaining anxiety, nor losing hope of the mercy of Allah, and that Allah will reward all the servants in the hereafter. And in the hadith: “Abu Hurairah narrated (that the the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w)) said: “Whoever kills himself with (an instrument of) iron, his iron will be in his hand, to continually stab himself in his stomach with it, in the fire of Jahannam, dwelling in that state eternally. And whoever kills himself with poison, then his poison will be in his hand, to continually take it in the Fire of Jahannam, dwelling in that state eternally. And whoever throws himself from a mountain to kill himself, then he will be continually throwing himself in the Fire of Jahannam, dwelling in that state eternally”
