BEING THE SECOND SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM DATED
11TH MUHARRAM 1443 AH (20TH AUGUST, 2021 CE)
UNDERSTANDING THE BLESSING OF SECURITY AND ITS VIRTUES
All Praises belong to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, who made security to accompany faith. He, the Most High, said: “Those who believe and do not confound their faith with wrongdoing, it is them who have security, and they are guided”. I testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partner. Glorified He is over what they associate with Him. I testify also that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger, the honest trusted one. May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him and his family and his companions who adjudicated with the truth and by so doing were just.
Servants of Allah! I enjoin you and myself with the fear of Allah the Almighty. So fera Allah so Je accordingwill be merciful to you, in accordance to His Words: “Oh ye who believe, fear Allah and look at what you put forward for tomorrow, and fear Allah, Allah is Aware of what you do. And do not be like those who forgot Allah and He causes them to forget themselves. Those are the wrongdoers” (Al-Hashr:18-19).
Brothers in Faith! The topic of our sermon today is about: Understanding the blessing of security and its virtues. The reason for choosing this topic at this present time is the state of our nation, Nigeria in general, which is ravaged with insecurity, kidnapping, tribalism, and the crises between herders and farmers within the cities. One of the objectives of this sermon is to call for achieving a balance between the stakeholders and the perpetrators of evil.
Dear Muslims, scholars of the Deen have made it clear that the true pristine Islaam encourages the preservation of the security and stability of nations, and considered this as one of the conditions of Faith, emphasizing that the blessing of security has a close relationship with the growth and development of the nation. If security prevails in the country, every individual person becomes productive and active, whereas in the shadow of insecurity, no nation can grow and no civilization stands.
Brothers in Islam, know that security and safety are among the most important pillars of societies and the means of their stability. There can be no stability and no economic activities without security. There is no growth, no advancement, no progress, and no prosperity without security. For this reason, our father, Ibraheem (peace be upon him) prayed for the place of living of his son, Ismaeel and his wife, Haajar. And the first of his request was Security and Safety. As he said, as reported in the Qur’an, (رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هَذَا بَلَدًا آمِنًا وَارْزُقْ أَهْلَهُ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ) “…My Lord, make this a safe land and provide its people with fruits…” (Al-Baqarah: 126). Thus he prayed for the place to be a city, to be safe, and to provide its people with fruits so that they could achieve food security and psychological security, in addition to other forms of security in general.
Dear Muslims, the notion of security means the feeling of an individual or the society of protection and safety from dangers be it external or internal, and security is not only a military concept as some are won’t to believe, but rather, security in its general understanding means economic, political and social security. If security is achieved according to this comprehensive concept, then safety is achieved. It is a feeling of peace of mind and comfort.
Brothers in Faith! One of the people of knowledge has said, considering the importance of security in the life of nations, Allah, Glorified and Exalted He is, swore by it, saying: “By the figs and the olives (1) and the mount of Sinai (2) and this secure country”, (At-Teen:1-3), and our Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him), says: “Whoever wakes up with his house secure, in his flock, healthy in his body, and has his sustenance for the day, it is as if the world has been given to him to the fullest extent.” Islam considers the interest of people in provide security for others and the discharge of that as a condition of Eeman (Faith). One of the means of preserving the blessing of security and stability is achieving justice among all the citizens of the country. Allah Almighty helps a people or a community that is just, even if they are unbelievers, and He does not help the unjust people, even if they are Muslims.
What is meant by justice is achieving justice in all its aspects, including:
a. Justice in judicial ruling
b- Justice in speech
c- Justice in the sharing and distribution of resources
d- Access to employment opportunities
e- Equal opportunities to health, education and social welfare.
Also, one of the means of maintaining the blessing of security and stability is to apply the law decisively to both the young and old without hesitation, compliment or favour. Our Prophet (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) says: “What destroyed those before you was that if the honorable among them stole, they left him, and if the common people among them stole, they cut him (his hand).” .
Brothers in Faith! Islaam has legislated laws to preserve life, wealth and honor. Do retribution is legislated to preserve lives, the punishment for theft to preserve wealth, the punishments for adultery and for slander to preserve honor, and the war against corruption and corrupt people on earth. The Almighty said: “The recompense is only for those who fight Allah and and His Messenger corruption to be killed or crucified or their hands and feet cut off from or otherwise put out of the land, disgrace them in this world and for them in the Hereafter a great punishment). (Maaidah :33). He – Glorified and Exalted He is – stressed the importance of spreading the values of solidarity and compassion among all the citizensof the country, for, a country without mercy cannot be safe, because we are all in one ship.
Our Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) says: “The example of the one staying within the boundaries of Allah and the one who transgresses them is like the example of a people who took charge of a ship and some of them are at the top and some of them at the lower part of it, so those at the lower part, if they need water, would request from those above them. And they said, “if only we had broken a part (to get water) and not need to bother those above us”. If they leave them and what they want, they will all perish, and if they hold them by their hands, they will be saved, and they will all be saved”.
Brothers in Islam, verily one of the causes of security in the country is to show gratitude for favours of Allah, the Exalted. Allah, the Exalted said: (وَضَرَبَ اللَّهُ مَثَلًا قَرْيَةً كَانَتْ آمِنَةً مُّطْمَئِنَّةً يَأْتِيهَا رِزْقُهَا رَغَدًا مِّن كُلِّ مَكَانٍ فَكَفَرَتْ بِأَنْعُمِ اللَّهِ فَأَذَاقَهَا اللَّهُ لِبَاسَ الْجُوعِ وَالْخَوْفِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَ) “And Allah presents an example: a city [i.e., Makkah] which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing.” (Al-Nahl: Verse 112)
All human beings need to live in peace and security, so that countries may prosper and develop, and the welfare of their children may be achieved.
Dr. Nassar added: One of the mechanisms for achieving security is to spread a culture of security and peace. We all need the values of security, peace and tolerance in all its dimensions, which makes it imperative for everyone to spread these values in the society, at home, and at school and that is why the greeting of Islam is “May the peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you.”
Another instrument for engendering Security in the society is moderation and avoiding extremism.
Dear Muslims, Islam has called attention of the Muslims to the importance of societal cooperation in exposing corrupters and vandals and the need to deal with them with iron hand. Allah’s Apostle said, “Help your brother, whether he is an oppressor or he is an oppressed one. People asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! It is all right to help him if he is oppressed, but how should we help him if he is an oppressor?” The Prophet said, “By preventing him from oppressing others.”
Here we affirm that Islam forbade all forms of corruption on earth, such as corruption and assault on public and private properties, obstruction of roads, or calling for disruption of the course of livelihood, and everything that harms the interests of the country that is not approved by any religion, nor moral nor sound mind. It is obligatory upon the society to stand united in the face of this corruption, and all forms of corruption on earth. Everyone has to play his part in accordance with the saying of our prophet, peace be upon him: “Whoever amongst you sees an evil, he must change it with his hand; if he is unable to do so, then with his tongue; and if he is unable to do so, then with his heart; and that is the weakest form of Faith”. (Muslim)
I said all that I have said and I seek the forgiveness from Allah Ta’alah for me and for you and for all Muslims. Ask forgiveness from Him and repent unto Him, indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
THE SECOND SERMON
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, Who says in His Exalted book: (هُوَ الَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي الْأُمِّيِّينَ رَسُولًا مِّنْهُمْ يَتْلُو عَلَيْهِمْ آيَاتِهِ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا مِن قَبْلُ لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُّبِينٍ) “It is He who has sent among the unlettered [Arabs] a Messenger from themselves reciting to them His verses and purifying them and teaching them the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] and wisdom [i.e., the sunnah] – although they were before in clear error.” [Suratul Jum’ah: 2]. We praise Him, glory be unto Him, and thank Him. We believe and trust in him. We beseech peace and blessings upon the best of Allah’s creation, our leader and master Muhammad, and upon his family and companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.
O Servants of Allah, in the second sermon, we will focus our conversation on what have observed concerning the declining the level of education in our societies today, the topic will be in series within the second sermon. We will start with the elucidation of the concern of Islam on education.
Dear Muslims: There is no difference between two persons that our master, the Messenger of God – may God’s prayers and peace be upon him is the greatest reformer in human history. Therefore, any reform we seek to implement must follow the approach of the greatest reformer, and if we do not, then our affiliation to him (peace be upon him) remains superficial and devoid of the essence of the acclamation. He (peace be upon him) is a role model for all components of the Islamic entity, as rulers, judges, teachers, politicians, soldiers, and so on.
He (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever teaches some knowledge will have the reward of the one who acts upon it, without that detracting from his reward in the slightest.” He (peace be upon him) also said: ‘The rewards of the good deeds that will reach a believer after his death are: Knowledge which he taught and spread; a righteous son whom he leaves behind; a copy of the Qur’an that he leaves as a legacy; …”
Ibn Abbas – may Allah be pleased with them both – said: “There were some people among the captives on the day of Badr who did not have a ransom, so the Messenger of Allah – may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – made for them as ransom to teach the children of the Ansar to read and write, and whoever is able to teach ten children will be able to ransom himself. Therefore, for the Prophet, peace be upon him, to accept teaching to read and write instead of ransom at a time when they were most in need of money, shows us the sublimity of Islam in its view of knowledge and literacy and elimination of illiteracy.” We will continue our discourse about the decline in the level of education in the next khutbah, inshaa Allah.
