In The Name Of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

BEING THE FOURTH SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF DHUL-QA’DAH 25/D. QA’DAH/1438AH (18/AUG/2017CE)

VIRTUES AND RECOMMENDED ACTS OF THE FIRST TEN DAYS IN DHUL-HIJJAH

All Praises belong to Allah Who has honoured the first ten days in Dhul-Hijjah with the day of Arafa, which is full of blessings for sincere servants.Allah says:

وَالْفَجْرِ (1) وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ (2) وَالشَّفْعِ وَالْوَتْرِ (3)” {الفجر:89\1-3}

“ By the dawn. And [by] ten nights. And [by] the even [number] and the odd” (89: 2- 3)

We celebrate His praises and seek help and guidance from Him. We believe in Him and put our trust in Him. Whom Allah guides surely is guided and whom He misleads, surely you will find no one to guide or protect him. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, and that Muhammad (pbuh)is His servant and Messenger, who said: “There is no day wherein an act is more rewarding as the ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah), increase therein the Tasbeeh, the Tahleel and the Takbeer“. O Allah! Bestow peace and blessings on him, his family, companions and followers until the Day of recompense.

As to what follows,

Servants of Allah, I advise you and myself to fear Allahin consonance with the words of Allah thus:

وَاتَّقُونِ يَاأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ (197) ” {البقرة:2\197}

And fear Me, O you men of understanding (2:197)

Brothers in faith, this is the fourth meet and the last in the month ofDhul-Qa’dah, and-Insha Allah, next Friday we shall be in the month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Therefore we have chosen for discussion- VIRTUES AND THE RECOMMENDED ACTS OF THE FIRST TEN DAYS IN DHUL-HIJJAHin order not to miss the great bounties that come with the period.

Dear Muslims, all praises are due to Allah Who creates and prefers what he wills. He created the heavens and honouredthe Paradise, He created mankind and favors believers among them. And among believers, He chose the prophets, among whom He ranked the selected five- Ulu-Al-‘Azm above other prophets, and also made prophetMuhammad the leader of them all. He also created the earth and honoured Makkah. He created the days and made the month of Ramadanthe best month, Friday the best day, Laylat al-Qadr the best night and an hour on Friday its best hour. He also made the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, which is fast approaching, the best of the tens, full of blessings and status before Allah. It is the period Muslims make pilgrimage to the house of Allah for those with the ability once in a life time, however, the benefits of the ten days are jointly enjoyed by both pilgrims and non-pilgrims.

Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah grant him mercy)was asked about the most rewarding of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and the last ten days of Ramadan, and he replied: “The days of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are better than days of the last ten days of Ramadan, while the nights of the last ten days of Ramadan are better than the nights of the first ten days in Dhul- Hijjah.

Some of the virtues of the first ten days inDhul- Hijjah:

  • Allah swore by it in the Qur’an thus: (وَالْفَجْرِ وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ)“By the dawn. And [by] ten nights.” (89:2-3)
  • It falls within the month of hajj which is also one of the sacred months.
  • The religion of Islam was completed in the month, and the Jews are envious. A Jewish priest said to Umar- may Allah be pleased with him, “There is a verse in your Book, if it were to be revealed to us – Jews _ we would have taken that day for feast, Allah says: “This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (5: 3), Umar said:” I know when and whereit was revealed; it was revealed on a Friday at Arafah”
  • It is a day full of virtues wherein the name of God where mentioned, the Almighty said:“That they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of Allah on known days over what He has provided for them of [sacrificial] animals. “{Hajj 28}
  • It is also the best days in the world, most beloved by Allah, acts therein are most beloved before Allah. Jabir narrated that the Prophet peace be upon him said: “The best days in the world are the ten days (first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah), then some companions said: “Are there none like them even in the way of Allah? He said: And there are none like them even in the way of Allah, except a man who soil his face in the sand”Narrated by al-Bazzar and Ibnhibaan, and Albaani graded it as Sound.”

The Prophet said: “No day is superior before Allah, or that a deed done there in is beloved to Allah- the exalted, than these days, i.e: the ten days. Then the companions said: O messenger of Allah, not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad, except a man who goes out with his soul, and property (for Allah’s sake) and does not return with any of those things.” (Tirmidhi).

Ibn Abbass narrated that: “The Prophet said, “No good deeds done on other days are superior to those done on these (first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah).” Then some companions of the Prophet said, “Not even Jihad?” He replied, “Not even Jihad, except that of a man who does it by putting himself and his property in danger (for Allah’s sake) and does not return with any of those things.” (Bukhari).

  • Arafa day also falls within the period of these ten days, as well as the night to be spent at Muzdalifa having left mount Arafa.
  • The day of slaughtering which is considered by some scholars as the superior day of the year, is within the ten also, because it consists of most of the rites of hajj including: stoning pebbles, shaving the head, slaughtering for those at hajj and non-pilgrims, tawaf-al ifadhoh, sa’y, eid prayer. The prophet said: “The greatest day before ALLAH is the day of slaughtering, then the day of rest at Muna (the 11th day of D.Hijjah)” Narrated by Abu Dawood and Nisaai, Albaaniy grade as sound.”
  • Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said in Al-Fath: “What seems to be the reason for distinguishing the first ten days of DhulHijjahis that major acts of worship take place within it, they are prayer, fasting, almsgiving and pilgrimage, which are not existing in other periods.” {Fathul- Bari }. These are the same days Allah gave to Musa (AS) that he could complete his term of forty nights. Allah says:(وواعدنا موسى ثلاثين ليلة وأتْممناها بعشر فتم ميقات ربه أربعين ليلة {الأعراف 142 }) “And We made an appointment with Moses for thirty nights and perfected them by [the addition of] ten; so the term of his Lord was completed as forty nights.” {7: 142} (see- Tabari 13 / 86-87).
  • Therefore, the ten days should be spent to maximize the reward therein by all Muslims.

RECOMMENDED DEEDS IN THE FIRST TEN DAYS:

  • Sincere repentance. Allah says: (وتوبوا إلى الله جَميعا أيها الْمؤمنون لعلكم تفلحون)

“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.” (9: 31)

  • Prayer: being early to prayer and hasten to be in the first row, making lot of supererogatory prayers, Thawbaan said: I heard the Messenger of Allah peace be upon him said: ” Make frequent prostrations before Allah, for you will not make one prostration without raising you a degree because of it, and removing a sin from you “(Narrated by Muslim).
  • Fasting: as narrated by Hunaida bin Khalid from his wife, from some of the wives of the Prophet- peace be upon him, she said: “The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,used to fast nine days ofDhulHijjah, the day of Ashura, and three days of each month,” narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawood and Nasaai”
  • Performing Hajj and Umrah: The prophet- peace be upon him, said: “An Umrah is an expiation for the sins committed between it and the next, and Hajj which is accepted will receive no other reward than Paradise..” {Narrated by Muslim}.
  • I’tikaaf: Ya’la bn Umayah said: “I will stay in the mosque for an hour and I do that only for I’tikaaf.”
  • Chanting Takbeer, Tahleel, and Tahmeed: Narrated Ibn Amr that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “There is no day wherein an act is more rewarding as the ten days (of Dhul-Hijjah), increase therein the Tasbeeh, the Tahleel and the Takbeer“. Narrated by Ahmad. Bukhari reported that “Ibn Umar and Abu Hurairah go out to the market during the ten days chanting takbeer, and people chorus their takbeer praises”
  • Performing lots of prayers and seeking forgiveness and more supererogatory prayers.
  • Slaughtering on the Day of Sacrifice: The prophet- peace be upon him said: “No human performs an act most pleasing to Allah on the day of slaughtering as shedding the blood of animals of sacrifice” (Tirmidhi).

Shaykh Muhammad bn Saalih Uthaimeen said: “the word of the prophet (pbuh) referring to good work, includes- prayer, charity, fasting, remembrance, saying takbeer, reading the Qur’an, goodness to parents, joining ties of kinship, kindness to all creatures and good neighborliness, and so on.”(Shar’h of Riyadh-us- Saliheen 3/395.

Islamic Etiquette for those who wish to slaughter:

He should abstain from shaving, cutting or pulling all his hair and nails whenever Dhul-Hijjah begins till the Day of Sacrifice- the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah after he has slaughter his animal.Muslim narrated from Umm Salamah that the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “When you sight the crescent of Dhul- Hijjah, and one of you wishes to make sacrifice, he should abstain fromcutting or shaving his hair and nails.”

Second Sermon

Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon Muhammad, his household, companions and all those who follow his footsteps till the day of judgement.

Allah says:

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted..(49: 13)

Dear servants of Allah it is worthy at this time to focus our discussion on the unity of the citizens of Nigeria, from east and west, north and south, because in unity is strength and success. Disintegration leads to weakness and failure. There is no other reason that could bring about disintegration than racial discrimination and tribalism.

The ongoing call by some Ibos (The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)) for Biafra state is an impending danger. They claim they are ready to go to war against the Hausas and the Fulanis again as proclaimed by their leader,Nnamdi Kanu. In the same vein is the claim by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum calling for the immediate exodus of the Ibos from the 19 northern states of Nigeria, before the first day of October, 2017. The two statements are dangerous and forbidden in Islamic law.

Tribal Nepotism in the Islamic Perspective:
The Islamic religion forbids boasting among people which could lead to racial fanaticism or tribalism that could eventually leads to discord and disagreement among people, and the disintegration within one society, and even leads them to sever ties and love among them .. The Holy Quran confirms cooperation and love among individuals in the Muslim community, and to achieve harmony among all Muslims, through the link of the Islamic faith, which is the highest link within the Muslim community ..

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted..(49: 13)

The Prophet “He is not one us who calls for `Asabiyyah, (nationalism/tribalism) or who fights for `Asabiyyah or who dies for `Asabiyyah.”

And in another Hadith, the Messenger of Allah (saaw) referring to nationalism, racism, and patriotism said:

“Leave it, it is rotten.”[Muslim and Bukhari] and in the Hadith recorded in Mishkat al-Masabih, the Messenger of Allah (saaw) said,“He who calls for `Asabiyyah is as if he bit his father’s genitals.”

Also, the Messenger of Allah (saaw) said, narrated by At-Tirmidhi and Abu Dawud,“There are indeed people who boast of their dead ancestors; but in the sight of Allah they are more contemptible than the black beetle that rolls a piece of dung with its nose. Behold, Allah has removed from you the arrogance of the Time of Jahiliyyah (Ignorance) with its boast of ancestral glories. Man is but an Allah-fearing believer or an unfortunate sinner. All people are the children of Adam, and Adam was created out of dust.”

Distinguished Muslims, the best for us in Nigeria is to unite as one country, the giant of the African continent, without paying attention to regional, or racial, or religious or tribal differences. We are all from Adam, and Adam was created from dust, and to Allah belongs the wisdom for making us one nation.
