WHOM SHOULD WE VOTE

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL

BEING THE FIRST KHUTBAH FOR THE MONTH OF J-UULA 26/J-UULA /1440AH (1ST /FEB/2019)

WHOM SHOULD WE VOTE

Praise be to Allah,

:﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَخُونُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوا أَمَانَاتِكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ﴾ {الأنفال:8 \27}

O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].we praise and thank Him-the Exalted, we believe in Him and rely on Him. We seek refuge in Him from the evils of ourselves and deeds. He whom Allah guides is guided, and whom He leads astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I equally testify that our Prophet, Muhammad (SAW) is His servant and Messenger, he said: “When honesty is lost, then wait for the Hour.” It was asked, “How will honesty be lost, O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, “When authority is given to those who do not deserve it, then wait for the Hour.” (Bukhari)

… May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him (SAW), his noble household, faithful companions, the succeeding generation and whoever follows them in righteousness till the end of time.

Oh worshipers of Allah, I admonish you and myself to fear Allah, for that is the sole preparation required for admission into the home of permanence on the day of judgement. Allah says

That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allah.   (19: 63)

Brothers in Islam, today’s khutbah will be in furtherance of discussion on politics in Islam. We shall today discuss on whom we should vote for or the conditions essential to be found in the electoral candidates.

Who should we vote for?

We should vote for whom we trust his religion, trustworthiness, and ability, simply put, the most upright among the candidates should be given the votes. In a situation where the available candidates lack these quality-as is the reality in our time- then we must vote for the candidate with lesser evil. It is known practice among the scholars of hadith to describe a particular hadith as “the most correct point on the matter of discussion”  even when the hadith in question is weak. This is because any other available hadith is even worse in status than the weak hadith.

Allah says: (يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَخُونُوا اللَّهَ وَالرَّسُولَ وَتَخُونُوا أَمَانَاتِكُمْ وَأَنْتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ) (O you who have believed, do not betray Allah and the Messenger or betray your trusts while you know [the consequence].) (8: 27)

The Prophet said: “Any person who appoints a person over a group of people, and there exists among the group a better person before than whom he has appointed, such has betrayed Allah, His messenger, and the Muslims.” (Hakim)

It is not right to sell his vote, by voting the buyer, as this is regarded as bribery in Islam. Both the giver and taker of bribe are cursed based on his statement (peace be upon him): “Allah curses the giver of bribe and the taker.” (Ahmad)

Ibn Taymiyyah said (may Allah be merciful to him) in his book, As-siyaasat as-shar’iyyah fi islah ar-raa’i wa ar-ra’iyyah:

The best is the most appropriate.

“When he knows this, he should only appoint the best available. In the event where the most qualified person is not available, then he votes the closest person to the required quality in every postion. If this standard is used with utmost care and effort, surely trust would have been adequately discharged and obligation accomplished, he would be among the just leaders before Allah, even when some deficiencies beyond his control occur through other than him. Allah says: (فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ) (So fear Allah as much as you are able) (64: 16). (لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا) On no soul doth Allah Place a burden greater than it can bear.” (2:286).

He who discharges the obligation on him is guided. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When I command you over a matter, approach it base on your ability.” (Bukhari/ Muslim).

However, any shortcoming emanating from him in his choice, or an act of deception, such will attract punishment, that is why it is imperative to know the most suitable personality for every post.

Strength and trustworthiness are the basic fundamentals of authority. 28\ 26) ((Indeed, the best one you can hire is the strong and the trustworthy. 12\54}) ((“Indeed, you are today established [in position] and trusted.” 12:54)) (﴿إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ (19) ذِي قُوَّةٍ عِنْدَ ذِي الْعَرْشِ مَكِينٍ (20) مُطَاعٍ ثَمَّ أَمِينٍ﴾{التّكوير:81\19-21}  ) (([That] indeed, the Qur’an is a word [conveyed by] a noble messenger ( 20 )   [Who is] possessed of power and with the Owner of the Throne, secure [in position], ( 21 )   Obeyed there [in the heavens] and trustworthy.” 81: 19-21))

Regarding strength, Allah says as well:

Strength, with regards to authority and leadership, occupies major position. Strength is very relevant in the control of war situation as that stems from strength of the mind-courage, to the experience in war and strategies. The war is a trick, to the technical abilities in the battle engagement, including aiming targets, physical challenge, mounting rides, and escape tactics, etc. Allah says:

8\60}) (And prepare against them whatever you are able of power and of steeds of war)

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “throw (at tarhets), ride, for you to throw is more liked by me than that you ride, he who learnt throwing art and then forgets, such is not of us.” In another narration- “it is a favour he denied.” (Muslim)

Strength in judgement among mankind is based on knowledge of justice described in the Qur’an and Sunnah and the ability to implement the laws.

Trustworthiness is based on the fear of Allah, and to desist from selling the words of Allah for meagre price, and to desist from fearing the people. Allah stresses these three qualities for whoever governs over the people in His word: (فَلَا تَخْشَوُا النَّاسَ وَاخْشَوْنِ وَلَا تَشْتَرُوا بِآيَاتِي ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا وَمَنْ لَمْ يَحْكُمْ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ)

So do not fear the people but fear Me, and do not exchange My verses for a small price. And whoever does not judge by what Allah has revealed – then it is those who are the disbelievers.” (5: 44)

That is why the Prophet (pbuh) said: “Judges are three; two judges will be in fire and one will be in paradise; a man who knows the truth and judges by the opposite, he will be in fire, and a man who judge among people out of ignorance, he will be in fire, and a man who knows the truth and judges by it he will be in paradise.” (Sunan)

The word judge here refers to every person who judges between two people; be it the khalifa, ruler, deputy, governor, or one appointed to arbitrate using the shariah law, even the one judging between children in the matters of their game of lines.

SECOND KHUTBAH

All praises are due to Allah, We praise and thank Him, believe and depend on Him. I testify there is no god but Allah alone and I testify that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger.  May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense.

Allah says:

“ O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.”  (33:59)

Dear servants of Allah, the UN commemorates today as the World Hijab Day. We thus consider it right to discuss on the history of this event and some of the virtues of Hijab.

History of the World Hijab Day

The World Hijab Day is being commemorated by 116 countries, with the activities revolving around creating awareness for the Hijab to increase the understanding of other people about the hijab as well as project religious tolerance.  The maiden event was held in 2013. The concept of the day was conceive by ‘Nazma Khan’ held in New York in the US. On this day, there is a call to mobilise Muslim girls and Non Muslim girls to adorn the hijab and to understand their impression about it. Last year, girls from 50 countries participated, while the number jumps to 116 this year. Nazma Khan says she is striving this year to ensure million participate in the event across the world under the theme: “Better Awareness, Greater Understanding, Peaceful World.”

History of the Event

Despite the condemnation by some in the West against hijab, linking it to persecution of the female and religious rigidity, all that have not prevented the Benghali Muslim lady Nazma Khan living in New York, US from adorning the hijab regarded as a symbol of faith, beauty and humility. Here is the beginning of the World Hijab Day concept with the first event held in 2013.

The virtues of Hijab

  • Hijab is obedience to Allah. Allah made obedience to His commands an obligation. Allah said:

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error. (33: 36).

2- The hijab is Purity

Allah says of the wisdom in legislating Hijab thus: (وَإِذَا سَأَلْتُمُوهُنَّ مَتَاعًا فَاسْأَلُوهُنَّ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ ذَلِكُمْ أَطْهَرُ لِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَقُلُوبِهِنَّ [الأحزاب: 53])

And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.” (33: 53)

3- The Hijab is faith:
The command for hijab was addressed to believing women alone.  Almighty Allah said: (Say to the believing women) He also said: (and the women of the believers).

4- Hijab is piety:

Allah says: O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness – that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.” (7: 26)

Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
