2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE BENEFICENT, THE MERCIFUL
BEING THE SECOND KHUTBAH FOR THE MONTH OF RAJAB 7/RAJAB /1440AH (14 /MARCH/2019CE)

2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS

Praise be to Allah who sent down the Criterion upon His Servant that he may be to the worlds a warner. He to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and who has not taken a son and has not had a partner in dominion and has created each thing and determined it with [precise] determination. We praise and thank Him-the Exalted, we believe in Him and rely on Him. We seek refuge in Him from the evils of ourselves and deeds. He whom Allah guides is guided, and whom He leads astray, none can guide him. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, and I equally testify that our Prophet, Muhammad (SAW) is His servant and Messenger. May the peace and blessing of Allah be upon him (SAW), his noble household, faithful companions, the succeeding generation and whoever follows them in righteousness till the end of time.
Oh worshipers of Allah, I admonish you and myself to fear Allah, in the open and the secret. Allah says

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment. (65: 2-3 )

Brothers in Islam, we witnessed the 2019 general elections from which we have learnt and derived some lessons which coincidentally shall form the theme of our sermon today; 2019 GENERAL ELECTIONS: LESSONS AND EXHORTATIONS.
This shall be discussed as follow:

1- Sovereignty and Power belongs to Allah alone: This is clearly stated in the Qur’an thus:
Say, “O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent. You cause the night to enter the day, and You cause the day to enter the night; and You bring the living out of the dead, and You bring the dead out of the living. And You give provision to whom You will without account.”
Dear brothers in faith, these two verses show that Allah disposes His affairs as described. He grants power to whom He wishes and withdraws it from whom He wishes. He honours whom He wishes and demotes whom He wishes and He provides for whom He wishes without measure. Allah Has granted President Muhammadu Bukhari a second term to direct the nation’s affairs to the next four years, as well as other victorious candidates nationwide, while He equally denied others by His will. Allah also honoured the good people of this nation who expended all efforts towards the success of the elections; such personalities like Professor Mahmud Yakubu and his officers, the media, the pressmen, the security personnel, while in contrast to that Allah relegated others who were evil plotters, who plotted to scuttle the electoral process. (وَمَكَرُوا وَمَكَرَ اللهُ وَاللهُ خَيْرُ الْمَاكِرِينَ) “And they planned, but Allah planned. And Allah is the best of planners.” (6:54)

2- Alternation of power and control:
The election teaches us another tradition of Allah that life turns around, and that permanence of any situation is impossible. Alternation of contrasting realities among mankind is one of the traditions of Allah; regarding power, wealth, statehood, honour, influence, technology etc. Many nations who once held control power yesterday but today are unknown and forgotten. The ruling family of today would become subject to others. 3\:140}) (“And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people …” 3: 140) (﴿وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ﴾ {الأعراف:7\34}) (And for every nation is a [specified] term. So when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede [it]. 7: 34).

3- Benefit of patience and persistence:
Patience and persistence are a major prerequisite to achieve success in life and hereafter matters. This time is the fourth that Gen Muhammad Buhari made effort in the elections from 2003, 2007, 2011 and finally 2015. He was patient and never lost hope in the mercy of his lord, thus Allah assisted him in 2015 and this year 2019 also. Allah is with the patient ones.

4- Expertise, mastery and fairness are the secret of success:
Dear beloved, among the reasons that contributed to the success of the last election was the expertise and mastery of the Electoral Commission – INEC about its obligations and duty in addition to the fairness of its staff, especially the chairman- Prof Mahmud Yakubu, the same was Allah honoured Prof Attahiru Jega in 2015, may Allah protect them. Nigerians will never forget his role and that of his staff in the last election. The Prophet said: “Verily Allah- the exalted, likes when anyone of you does a work, that he perfects it.” (Bayhaqi)

5- Growth in political consciousness in Nigeria:
Nigerians are beginning to consider personalities than political parties alone which was hitherto the trend. People today are meticulous about performance record shunning political party or cultural affiliations. Failure to perform is the failure in the election regardless of your party’s strength.

6- The end of evil plot and the evil plotters:
Allah says: (﴿وَلَا يَحِيقُ الْمَكْرُ السَّيِّئُ إِلَّا بِأَهْلِهِ﴾ {فاطر:35 \43}) (but the evil plot does not encompass except its own people. 35: 43 ) The evil plotters actually plotted evil to scuttle the last electoral process after they have failed to majorly rig the election but Allah never granted their wish. Dear faithful, ponder over these verses (O mankind, your injustice is only against yourselves) (So he who breaks his word only breaks it to the detriment of himself.). Allah declares evil plot as the trait of the enemies of the Prophets and messengers of Allah: (﴿وَقَدْ مَكَرَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ فَلِلَّهِ الْمَكْرُ جَمِيعًا يَعْلَمُ مَا تَكْسِبُ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ وَسَيَعْلَمُ الْكُفَّارُ لِمَنْ عُقْبَى الدَّارِ﴾[الرعد: 42]) (And those before them had plotted, but to Allah belongs the plan entirely. He knows what every soul earns, and the disbelievers will know for whom is the final home.) (And they had planned their plan, but with Allah is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.)

7- Supplication to Allah and trust in Him; a strong fortress:
Among the secrets of the success of the 2019 general elections was the supplication made to Allah, the Creator, the displacer of worries and grieves, and the responder to the calls of the distressed, as well as the trust reposed in Him; secretly and openly. We called unto Him and He answered our calls; praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. 40\ 60}) (And your Lord says, “Call upon Me; I will respond to you.” Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.) (40:60) .

A brief advice:
We know that elections is yet to be concluded in some places in Nigeria, especially states like; Adamawa, auchi, Benue, Kano, Plateau, and Sokoto. 23rd of March, 2019 is the new date. The onus rests on the shoulders of INEC, the security men, the media, the candidates, the electorates, and political parties to exercise their duties with trust, and fear of Allah: “Everyone of you is a shepherd and everyone of you shall be questioned about his flock.”. Allah says: (ثُمَّ لَتُسْأَلُنَّ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَنِ النَّعِيمِ) “Then, shall ye be questioned that Day about the joy (ye indulged in!).” (102: 8)

SECOND KHUTBAH
All praises are due to Allah, We praise and thank Him, believe and depend on Him. I testify there is no god but Allah alone and I testify that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense.
Dear worshippers of Allah, the countries of the world commemorate today as the Consumer Right’s Day
The World Consumer Right’s Day
The day is commemorated annually by the United Nations on March 15. The Consumer Rights Day was chosen following the announcement by President John F. Kennedy in the US Congress of March 15, 1962, in which he said that “Consumers are the largest segment of the world and affected by the economic market, but her voice is still inaudible. ”
Consumer Protection Day’s Objectives:
1 – Claiming the basic and fundamental rights of the consumer «Eight Consumer Rights».
2. Demand for respect and protection of consumer rights.
3 – Highlight some of the wrongful and immoral practices that harm the interests of the consumer and the environment.
4 – Addressing the government agencies to issue legislation to provide the necessary information to consumers in dealing with goods and services.
The Eight Consumer’s Rights:
1. Right to security 2. Right to know 3. Right to choose 4. Right to listen to his opinions 5. Right to satisfy his basic needs 6. Right to compensation 7. Right to education 8. Right to live in a healthy environment.
Secondly, is the case of a three- storey building collapse which occurred at about 10am on Wednesday, 13th March, 2019, at Massey Street, Itafaji on Lagos Island. The building houses a school, Ohen Nursery and Primary School on the topmost floor, while other floors house residents and businesses. A pregnant woman, the proprietor of the school and 19 others, including no fewer than 12 pupils died in the collapsed building.
We beseech Allah, the exalted, to grant the families the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and forgive the dead Muslims among them. It is high time the government enforce the appropriate provisions of the law to demolish such life threatening buildings in our environment. The event is a clarion call to the government to do more in the area of provision of quality education for the masses. More is equally expected in the area of prompt response in the event of emergencies like this.
O Allah destroy the cunnings of the enemies of Muslims. O Allah invalidate their plots and tricks. O Allah extinguish the flame of their evil. O Allah cast the round of consequence on every unjust impostor, and render destruction and shame on whoever tries to ruin the country. O Allah protect the blood of the people, their property, and their dignity. O Allah set free all Muslim captives and prisoners. O Allah, protect them from before them and from behind them and on their right and on their left, and from above them. O Allah You have rightly said: ” And thus was made attractive to Pharaoh the evil of his deed, and he was averted from the [right] way. And the plan of Pharaoh was not except in ruin. “ (40:37) We hereby supplicate to You as did the believer among the people of pharaoh- “And you will remember what I [now] say to you, and I entrust my affair to Allah. Indeed, Allah is Seeing of [His] servants.” So Allah protected him from the evils they plotted, and the people of Pharaoh were enveloped by the worst of punishment –“(40: 44- 45). O Allah, The Everlasting, The Self-Existing, The Lord of the Worlds, The most merciful. O Allah, the Lord of this hour, O Allah, grant every Muslim passing through any form of difficulty ease, and every oppressed person and way out, and every worried person comfort, and for every grief person happiness, and answer to every seeker of good, and for every sick person healing. O Allah, The Everlasting, The Self-Existing, The Lord of the Worlds, The most merciful. O Allah, grant us sincerity in all calls, and acceptance of all acts of obedience, and being thankful in the event of good things, and reverence in prayer, and pardon in shortcomings, and forgiveness at mistakes, and patience in trials, and victory over the enemies, and victory over all odds and praises in times of blessings, and reflection over Your signs, and management of our affairs in this world and the hereafter, O Allah, The Everlasting, The Self-Existing, The Lord of the Worlds, The most merciful.
