THE HIJRAH AND ITS ROLE IN NATION-BUILDING

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL
THE SECOND KHUTBAH OF THE SACRED MONTH OF ALLAH, AL-MUḤARRAM
DATED: 09/01/1447 AH – 04/07/2025 CE
TOPIC: THE PROPHETIC MIGRATION AND ITS ROLE IN NATION-BUILDING

THE FIRST SERMON

All praise is due to Allah, the Controller of months and years, the One Who directs the nights and days. He made the noble Prophetic Hijrah—from the sanctified Makkah to the illuminated Madinah—a new beginning for establishing the Islamic state and a gateway to goodness, victory, and blessing for Islam and the Muslims.

We praise Him (Glorified and Exalted is He), and we thank Him. We seek His help and guidance, and we believe in Him and place our trust in Him. We seek refuge in Him from the evils of our souls and from the bad consequences of our actions. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whoever He allows to go astray, none can guide.

I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, without any partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger—the best of those who prayed, fasted, performed Hajj, migrated, and strove in the path of His Lord, the Mighty and Majestic.

O Allah, send peace and blessings upon him, his family, his companions, and all who follow his path, trace his footsteps, and adhere to his way until the Day of Final Recompense.

To proceed:

O servants of Allah! I enjoin you and myself to fear Allah, the Almighty, as He commanded in His saying:

﴿يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُمْ مُسْلِمُونَ﴾ [آل عمران: 102]
“O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].” (Aal Imran 3:102)

O noble Muslims, this is our second gathering in the sacred month of Allah, al-Muḥarram, and the topic of our sermon focuses on:

The Prophetic Migration and Its Role in Nation-Building

Definition of Hijrah – Linguistically and in Shari’ah:

Linguistically: Hijrah (الهجرة) refers to leaving one land for another, or the movement of individuals from one place to another in search of livelihood. (As found in Al-Muʿjam al-Wasīṭ)

In Islamic Law (Sharʿan): Hijrah refers to the migration of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his noble Companions (the Muhājirūn – may Allah be pleased with them all) from the sacred city of Makkah to the radiant city of Madinah, due to the severe persecution by the polytheists and in obedience to the command of Allah, the Exalted.

First: A Journey to Build a Nation Chosen by Allah to Change the Course of History

O brothers and sisters in faith! The noble Prophetic Hijrah was a journey to build a nation—one that moved from weakness to strength, from fear to security, from disunity to unity.
It was the journey of a nation chosen by Allah Almighty to change the course of history, led by the greatest leader in history, and the best Prophet ever created. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, and all his companions.

Second: The Announcement of the Birth of a Strong and Resilient Nation That Will Lead the World

The noble Prophetic Hijrah was the announcement of the birth of a strong and resilient nation that, within a few years, would lead the world — through the efforts of men who were sincere to Allah the Exalted and who rolled up their sleeves to build their homeland and achieve its glory. The noble Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) understood these great meanings of the Hijrah, and for that reason, they made it the starting point of the Islamic calendar for all major events in the Ummah’s history.

Through these noble meanings, the Hijrah teaches us to trust in the promise of Allah to His sincere and truthful servants — that Allah will fulfill His light and complete His promise. Thus, it is a message of glad tidings to our people in Palestine: that the end of their patience and steadfastness will be a divine victory, by the will of Allah. It was a journey of departure for the sake of return — but it was the return of victorious liberators.

Hijrah also reminds us to preserve the strength and stability of our homeland, Jordan, and to stand as one united front in the face of any threat that endangers it.

Third: Building a Strong Homeland and a State of Institutions

The Prophet ﷺ guides us to understand that one of the key objectives of Hijrah was to build a strong nation and a state of functioning institutions. Building a powerful Ummah begins with the establishment of effective institutions — institutions that meet the aspirations of the nation, envision its future, and fulfill the ambitions of its people.

Fourth: Building the Mosque — The Foundation of Creed and Religious Identity

When the Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he immediately built a mosque. This mosque was not merely a place of prayer — it became the center for establishing the pillars of belief, shaping Islamic identity, and fostering education, media, judiciary, consultation (shūrā), public opinion, and governance.

He ﷺ built the mosque to encompass these vital institutions that organized society, instilled its values, and fulfilled its objectives.

Fifth: Establishing a Strong and Independent Economy

We also learn from the noble Hijrah that one of the pillars of a strong Ummah, a resilient homeland, and a stable state is the presence of an independent and powerful economy. Such economic independence serves as a barrier against any external interference in political will or cultural identity by the enemies of Islam.

That is why one of the Prophet’s first acts in Madinah was to establish a separate market for Muslims — in order to break the monopoly of the Jews over trade and wealth. The Jews used their economic control to spread discord and hatred among different segments of society in order to strengthen their own position.

Sixth: Drafting a Charter (i.e., a Constitution) that Defines Rights and Responsibilities

The Prophet ﷺ also drafted a document that, in modern terms, would be considered a constitution — clarifying the rights and responsibilities of both the state and individuals, ensuring protection and order. It outlined the meaning of citizenship and the necessity of the rule of law.

Seventh: Establishing Brotherhood between the Muhājirūn and the Anṣār

The Prophet ﷺ established brotherhood (mu’ākhāh) between the Emigrants (Muhājirūn) and the Helpers (Anṣār), replacing the values of tribalism and arrogance — such as pride in lineage or tribal ancestry — with the spirit of Islamic unity and faith-based brotherhood.

As the Arab poet once said:

“I am but of Ghaziyyah—if she goes astray, I go astray with her; and if she is guided, I follow her guidance.”

Such ignorance was replaced by the unifying principle described in the verse:

﴿‌وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ‌وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتُ بَعْضُهُمْ أَوْلِيَاءُ بَعْضٍ﴾ [التوبة: 71]
“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:71)

And the slogan became:

﴿إِنَّمَا ‌الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ‌إِخْوَةٌ﴾ [الحجرات: 10]
“Indeed, the believers are but brothers.” (Surah Al-Ḥujurāt, 49:10)

And as Allah says:

﴿‌وَاعْتَصِمُوا بِحَبْلِ اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا وَلَا تَفَرَّقُوا وَاذْكُرُوا نِعْمَتَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ إِذْ كُنْتُمْ أَعْدَاءً فَأَلَّفَ بَيْنَ قُلُوبِكُمْ فَأَصْبَحْتُمْ بِنِعْمَتِهِ إِخْوَانًا﴾ [آل عمران: 103]
“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you — when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers.” (Surah Aal ʿImrān, 3:103)

Conclusion
We ask Allah Almighty that this new Hijri year be a year of goodness and blessings for the entire Muslim Ummah. I say this statement of mine, and I seek forgiveness from Allah the Almighty for me and for you. May Allah send blessings and peace upon our Master Muhammad, his family, his companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.

THE SECOND SERMON

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds, Who said in His definitive Revelation:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight against the polytheists collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous.” (Surah At-Tawbah, 9:36)

We praise Him—Glorified and Exalted is He—then send peace and blessings upon the best of Allah’s creation, our Master and Leader Muhammad, and upon his family, companions, and those who follow them in goodness until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed:

Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The best fasting after [the fasts of] Ramadan is in the month of Allah, al-Muḥarram; and the best prayer after the obligatory ones is the night prayer.”
(Narrated by Muslim, 1163)

In this hadith, the Prophet ﷺ encourages the Ummah to increase fasting during the month of Allah al-Muḥarram, describing it as the best voluntary fast after the obligatory fast of Ramadan. This description indicates its superiority over other forms of voluntary fasting.

Imam Ibn Rajab (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed out a beautiful secret in the Prophet ﷺ singling out this month for fasting. He explained that since the Prophet ﷺ called it “the month of Allah”, this attribution to Allah signifies its honor and virtue. And among all acts of worship, fasting is uniquely attributed to Allah Himself, as the Prophet ﷺ said:

“Every deed of the son of Adam is for him, except fasting — it is for Me, and I shall reward for it.”
(Narrated by al-Bukhārī, 1151; Muslim, 5927)

So, since this sacred month is attributed to Allah, it is most appropriate that it be honored with the act of worship that is also especially attributed to Allah — namely, fasting.

Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to command us to fast the day of ʿĀshūrā’ and urge us to do so, and he would take account of us on it.”

And when the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the reward and virtue of fasting the Day of ʿĀshūrā’, he replied: “It expiates the sins of the previous year.”
And in another narration:

“Fasting the day of ʿĀshūrā’, I hope that Allah will expiate [through it] the year before it.” (Narrated by Muslim, 1162)

O Brothers in Faith, we are in the midst of a consecutive eight-day fasting opportunity for those racing toward good deeds — from Thursday to Thursday. Yesterday, Thursday, was the 8th of the month of Allah al-Muḥarram. Today, Friday, is the day of Tāsūʿā’ (the 9th), Saturday is the day of ʿĀshūrā’ (the 10th), Sunday is the 11th of Muḥarram, and Monday is the 12th — a day of customary voluntary fasting. Then Tuesday to Thursday will be the three white days (13th, 14th, and 15th), known for their merit in fasting.

“And for that let the competitors compete.” (Surah Al-Muṭaffifīn, 83:26)

Finally, we must not neglect the matter of our brothers in Gaza, and we must continue to follow the events unfolding in Palestine—especially in Gaza, the land of honor and steadfastness:

Hamas: We Are Reviewing Mediators’ Proposals to End the Aggression and Aid Our People in Gaza
The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) announced that it is making intensive efforts through the brotherly mediators to “bridge the gap” between the concerned parties in order to reach a framework agreement that would pave the way for serious negotiations.

In a press statement released today, Wednesday, the movement confirmed that it is dealing with high responsibility and conducting national consultations to discuss the mediators’ proposals (Egypt and Qatar), aiming to reach an agreement that guarantees ending the aggression, ensuring withdrawal, and providing urgent humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.

On Tuesday, former U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Israel had accepted the “necessary conditions” for a 60-day ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, expressing hope that Hamas would also agree to them.

Hamas has repeatedly announced its readiness to release hostages in exchange for ending the genocide and ensuring the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. However, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu continues to evade this by introducing new conditions and only seeking partial deals that allow the war to continue.

Netanyahu: Hamas Will Not Remain in Gaza
In contrast, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Hamas would not remain in Gaza, asserting firmly that “there will be no Hamas-stan.”

Netanyahu, in statements reported by the Associated Press, emphasized that “Israel will work to free the hostages, defeat Hamas, and eradicate it from the Gaza Strip.”

He also announced a plan to connect the West to Asia, the Middle East, and the Arabian Peninsula by utilizing all the energy resources in the region, according to his description.

Servants of Allah, the dreams of Netanyahu and his supporters regarding our brothers in Palestine and the wider Muslim world are dreams that, by the permission of Allah Almighty, will never come true. Their goals will never be achieved by Allah’s might and decree, as confirmed in His Words:

“وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ”
“Indeed, Our soldiers will be those who are victorious.” (Surah As-Saffat (37:173)

“And it is an obligation upon Us to help the believers.” (Surah Ar-Rum (30:47)

Supplication (Du‘āʾ):

O Allah, forgive us our sins, our mistakes, and our excesses in our affairs. You know our sins best, and none forgives sins except You. O Allah, grant us a good ending, and make us among the people of Paradise, and protect us from the Hellfire, by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy. O Allah, give glory to Islam and the Muslims, and humiliate disbelief and the disbelievers. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from their evil, and we place You in their midst. O Allah, unite the hearts of the Muslims upon truth.

O Allah, grant victory, honor, dominance, strength, and awe to the people of Palestine. Strike fear into the hearts of their enemies and ours. O Allah, heal their wounded, release their captives, and lift the siege upon them. O Allah, remove their suffering and relieve their hardship. O Allah, grant victory to their mujahideen (freedom fighters) through Your strength and Your soldiers, O Lord of the Worlds. O Allah, grant safety to our homelands, and rectify our leaders and guide them to what You love and are pleased with. O Allah, forgive our deceased and the deceased among the Muslims. O Most Merciful of those who show mercy. O Lord of the Worlds.
