EIDUL ADHA KHUTBAH 1444 (2023)

EIDUL ADHA KHUTBAH 1444 (2023)

BEING THE SERMON FOR THE BLESSED E’ID AL-ADHA FOR THE YEAR 1444 AH (2023CE) DATED 10/12/1444AH (28-06-2023)

Allah is the greatest.  Allah is the greatest.  Allaah is great Allaah is great.  Allaah is the greatest.  Allaah is great Allaah is great.  Allah is the greatest.  Allah is the greatest, there is no god worthy of worship except Allah. Allaah is the greatest.  Allah is the greatest.

All praises belong to Allah. All praises belong to Allah, by Whose grace all good deeds are accomplished. He who guided us to this Deen. We would not have been guided if it weren’t for Allah. I testify that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partner. He set is apart with the best book ever revealed, and honoured us with the best prophet ever raised, and he completed His Favours on us we with the greatest religion, the religion of Islam: (الْيَوْمَ أَكْمَلْتُ لَكُمْ دِينَكُمْ وَأَتْمَمْتُ عَلَيْكُمْ نِعْمَتِي وَرَضِيتُ لَكُمُ الْإِسْلَامَ دِينًا) “Today I have completed your religion for you and perfected My favor upon you and chosen for you Islam as a religion…” (Al- Maaidah:3). I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. He discharged the trust and fully delivered the message. He admonished the nation, and strove in the Cause of Allah in the best way, and he left us on a vibrant path that is clear. Its nights are as clear as its days. None deviates from it except only the one that perishes. He obeys Allah and His messenger is guided, but he who disobeys both hurts no one except himself, he cannot harm Allah at all. Oh Allah, grant him your peace and benediction and bless this noble Prophet, and his family and companions. Oh Allah! Enliven us on his Sunnah and our nation on his path, and gather is together in his company with those whom You have  blessed among the prophets and the truthful ones and martyrs and the righteous ones. And indeed these are excellent companions.

Thereafter, Oh you Muslim brothers, this is the day of Eid al-Adha. The greatest day of Hajj. The day of the great gathering together, in which Muslims stand in the state of ihram, resolutely devoting themselves to Allah Ta’alah, chanting the Talbiyah: ” Labaika Allaahumah labayk, labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk, innal hamda wan-ni’mata laka wal-Mulk La shareeka lak” (Here I am, O Allah! Here I am, Here I am, You have no partner, here I am, Verily, all praise and thanks belong to You, Verily, all blessings belong to You, Verily, all sovereignty belongs to You, You have no partner.)

This is greatest day of Hajj. It is the second E’id of Muslims.  For Muslims, there is no other E’id beside these two except the weekly E’id on Fridays. Allah Ta’alah linked both E’id to one of the major acts of worship, and one of the great rites of Islam.  The first E’id comes right after the worship of fasting, and the second E’id comes after the worship of Hajj, after people had accomplished this obligations, or this ritual, having to stand in A’rafah, after they came out of their homes and left their families and loved ones, being migrants for the sake of  Almighty Ta’alah.

So it is as if the E’id celebration, in both al-Fitr and al-Adha are prizes or reward from Allah Ta’alah for His slaves, like a divine award to them, for what they accomplished of good deeds in obligatory fasting and Hajj.

The companions of the messenger, peace be upon him, said: “What are these sacrifices? He said: “The Sunnah of your father Ibrahim.” They said: What do we have from it? He said: “For every hair a good deed.” They said: What about wool? He said: “For every hair of wool, there is a good deed.” [Narrated by Ibn Majah and Al-Tirmidhi, and he classed it as hasan] He, peace be upon him said: “The first thing we begin with on this day of ours is to pray, then we return home to slaughter the sacrifice. And whoever slaughters in that way has indeed done our sunnah correctly, and whoever slaughters before that, then it is only meat for his family” (Bukhari)

THE DIVINE AND HUMAN OBJECTIVES OF THE ‘EID CELEBRATIONS IN  ISLAM:

These are the feasts for us Muslims, in which the divine objective is manifested as human objectives are also manifested. The divine objective is manifested in it by linking it to i’baadah. It is a celebration with prayers and glorifying Allah. People knew some other celebrations that emanated from their own desires and just pursuit of pleasure, but we Muslims begin our Eid celebration with Takbeer and prayer to Allah on the day of Eid before any other thing.

Thus, we as Muslims, our E’id celebration, is about glorifying Allah and praying to Him. We do not proclaim the name of any created being but rather we proclaim the name of Allaah alone. While other people proclaim the name of other creatures -small or big- Muslims in their E’id festivals say: Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar.  This is the beauty of our E’id celebrations: “Adorn your E’id celebration with Takbeer” (al-Tabarani).  Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest, Allaah is the greatest, there is no god worthy of worship except Allah.  Allah is the greatest,  Allah is the greatest, and to Allaah belong all  praises.

For Eid al-Fitr, Allaah Ta’alah says: ” … and to glorify Allah for what He has  guided you to, and that you may be grateful” {Baqarah:185}.  For Eid al-Adha, our Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) instructed us to say Takbeer after every salaat since the dawn of the day of ‘Arafah to the Asr of the last day of Tashreeq (ie twenty-three prayers).  In twenty-three prayers, the Muslim will say the Takbeer every time he performs the prayer. This is how the two major objectives are manifested in our Eid celebrations: the divine meaning that attaches the celebration to a celebration of Faith. The human objective: it is that a person should not forget his brother, that he should not be happy alone, that he should not be selfish.

SACRIFICE OF EID AL-ADHA:

The Eid al-Adha festival of sacrifice was legislated, making it a Sunnah of its Sunnahs, even Imam Abu Hanifa regard it as one of the obligations for those with the ability and ease to do it. The Muslim sacrifice to expand generosity on himself and his family, his neighbors and loved ones, then extend to the poor around him, they do not live as one who eat alone. It is not right for people to live in a closed secluded circle cut from others. Rather, they should look for the poor and needy, especially on the days of feasts and seasons of goodness. Islam established that before the world knew what was called socialism or communism or otherwise. Rather Islam wants that people be as loving brothers. There is no brotherhood nor love between a person with everything and a person with nothing. There is no brotherhood between an oppressor and the oppressed. There is no brotherhood between the one who puts his hand on his stomach complaining of being overfed, and the one who puts his hand on his stomach complains of hunger! But the real brotherhood is when people show kindness to one another, and support one another, the rich showers generosity on the poor, the strong person holds (supports) the weak.

But he has not broken through the difficult pass. And what can make you know what is [breaking through] the difficult pass? It is the freeing of a slave. Or feeding on a day of severe hunger. An orphan of near relationship. Or a needy person in misery. And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. Those are the companions of the right.” (Suratul Balad: 11- 18)

In the Eid festival, the human concept is manifested: that every Muslim congratulate his Muslim brother, to remove the gap or the disaffection between them, to end whatever dispute and do reconciliation, because the corruption of relationship is the shaver, it does not shave the hair but shaves the deen. If it is permissible for people to quarrel or turn back to each other on other days – even though this is not permissible at any time – then it is not permissible for them to quarrel, or turn back at one another, or cut relationship, during the days of ‘Eid. Look for your neighbor..  your brother..  your relatives… your neighbours … and for those around you. Join he who cuts off from you, be generous to he who forbids you, give forbids you, forgive those who wronged you, and do good to those who mistreat you, for these are the noble morals that the Prophet, peace be upon him, was sent to perfect. He, peace be upon him said: “I was sent to complete good manners” (narrated by Malik in Al-Muwatta)

CONCERN FOR THE AFFAIRS OF MUSLIMS FROM THE EAST TO THE WEST:

Brothers in faith, it is obligatory on us to pay attention to the matters of Muslims all over the world, because that is part of compliments of the faith: “He who did not care about the affair of Muslims is not one of them”. The world seems narrowed against Muslims today, it is our duty towards this religion is to work to enable its firmness in the land: (حَتَّى لَا تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ وَيَكُونَ الدِّينُ كُلُّهُ لِلَّهِ) until there is no fitnah and [until] the religion [i.e., worship], all of it, is for Allah.” (Al-Anfal: 39). It is imperative for us to spread this religion to all people.

It is not possible for a Muslim to live a complete and sound Islamic life by being isolated from his fellow Muslims, unconcerned by what is happening to them and what they are exposed to including attacks, calamities and bomb explosions at the hands of the enemies of Allah in different parts of the Muslim world, such as Palestine, Gaza, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq, Chechnya, Burma, the Central Africa Republic, Egypt, Nigeria, and others.

RENEWING THE UNDERSTANDING OF ISLAM:

We need a renewal in jurisprudence, understanding and thought, we however say: Ijtihad is not exclusive to scholars, we need to renew the understanding of the general Muslim masses, the misunderstood Islam, many people have erred in understanding Islam. They took out of Islam, an integral part of it, and introduced into it what is alien to it. In some instances, they put forward what should be delayed, and delayed what is should be brought forward, and this is the worst of what afflicts Islam, that you introduce to Islam that which is not part of it, and this is innovation. Or to expunge from the core of Islam, and this unfortunately is what we find in our time. Some people want Islam to be a copy of other religions, or from other sects. They want an Islam of peace without jihad, or a faith without a law, or a marriage without a divorce, or a religion without a state, or a right without a power, or a Qur’an without an army. The truth is that Islam is all of this; Islam is a belief, a law, and an integrated system of life. (وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَى لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ) “And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy, and good tidings for the Muslims. (An-Nahl:  89)

GLAD TIDINGS OF EVENTUAL VICTORY FOR ISLAM FROM THE QUR’AN AND THE HADITH

In the Qur’an, Allah, the Exalted says:

“Allah has promised those of you who believe and do good that He will certainly make them successors in the land, as He did with those before them; and will surely establish for them their faith which He has chosen for them; and will indeed change their fear into security—˹provided that˺ they worship Me, associating nothing with Me. But whoever disbelieves after this ˹promise˺, it is they who will be the rebellious.” (An-Nur: 55)

Allah the Exalted says: (هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَى وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْمُشْرِكُونَ) “He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with ˹true˺ guidance and the religion of truth, making it prevail over all others, even to the dismay of the polytheists.”(At-Tawbah: 33)

Allah the Exalted also says: (وَكَانَ حَقًّا عَلَيْنَا نَصْرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ) “For it is Our duty to help the believers.”(Ar-Rum: 47).

Allah the Exalted also says: (إِنَّا لَنَنْصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ) “We certainly help Our messengers and the believers, ˹both˺ in this worldly life and on the Day the witnesses will stand forth ˹for testimony˺.” (Al-Gafir: 51)

GLAD TIDINGS FROM THE HADITHS:

Among them is his saying, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him: “(This matter (Islam) will keep spreading as far as the night and day reach, until Allah will not leave a house made of mud or hair, but will make this religion enter it, while bringing might to a mighty person (a Muslim) and humiliation to a disgraced person (who rejects Islam). Might with which Allah elevates Islam (and its people) and disgrace with which Allah humiliates disbelief (and its people).” Narrated by Ahmad (narrated by Ahmad). 16957), classed as sound according to the conditions of Muslim and Ibn Hibban in al-Tarikh (6699)}.

Among them is his saying, peace be upon him: “The Prophet () said: Allah will raise for this community at the end of every hundred years the one who will renovate its religion for it. {Narrated by Abu Dawud in Al-Malahim (4291), Al-Tabarani in Al-Awsat (6527), and Al-Hakim in Al-Fitan wa Al-Malahim (8592)}.

RENEWAL OF WORKING IN ISLAM FOR ISLAM:

We are in dire need to renew our work, renew our work in Islam, and for Islam. We want to work for Islam and Islam is neither mere word, nor thought but Islam is a word, a thought and an action.

Allah, the Almighty created the heavens and the earth, and He created death and life to test which of you is best in deeds. He is the One Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days—and His Throne was upon the waters—in order to test which of you is best in deeds.”(Hud: 7)  And He the Almighty says: (الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْمَوْتَ وَالْحَيَاةَ لِيَبْلُوَكُمْ أَيُّكُمْ أَحْسَنُ عَمَلًا) “Who created death and life, that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed” (Al-Mulk: 2) that is, people do not compete in good deeds only, but they compete in the superlative qualities, which of them will be the best in deeds. So we should work, and also do it well, and to work for the religion and the world together, Islam is a religion and the world, and we must understand this.

GRATITUDE AND APPRECIATION TO ALLAH, THE LORD OF THE UNIVERSE, FOR THE OUTCOME OF THE 2023 GENERAL ELECTIONS IN NIGERIA:

We praise Him, may He be glorified and exalted, for the abundant blessings He bestowed upon us for the general elections in Nigeria in the year 2023 CE, which we had feared and worried about for a long time and Allah, the Almighty, made it easy.

The Almighty said: (لَئِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ لَأَزِيدَنَّكُمْ وَلَئِنْ كَفَرْتُمْ إِنَّ عَذَابِي لَشَدِيدٌ) “If you are grateful, I will surely give you more, and if you are ungrateful, then surely My punishment is severe” (Ibrahim: 7),

Allah says: (مَا يَفْعَلُ اللَّهُ بِعَذَابِكُمْ إِنْ شَكَرْتُمْ وَآمَنْتُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ شَاكِرًا عَلِيمًا) “What will Allah do with your punishment if you are grateful and you believe, and Allah is ever Appreciative, All-Knowing” (An-Nisaa: 147).

We pray to Allah, with this gratitude, to make Nigeria a safe, secure, prosperous and noble country and all other Muslim countries. O Lord of the worlds!

In You (Alone) we put our trust, and to You (Alone) we turn in repentance, and to You (Alone) is (our) final Return, “Our Lord! Make us not a trial for the disbelievers, and forgive us, Our Lord! Verily, You, only You are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.” (Al-Mumtahanah: 4-5).

PRESENT REALITIES IN NIGERIA:

It became clear that in Nigeria we are suffering the consequences of the removal of the fuel subsidy effected by President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as he already declared this during his election campaigns that he would remove the fuel subsidy, if he becomes the president of Nigeria. The same way it was stated by other presidential candidates like Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Peter Obi and others. We need to be patience and offer supplication to Allah to guide the new president and his team to goodness and guide them to the truth and what He loves and is pleased with.

A MESSAGE TO THE PRESIDENT – ASIWAJU BOLA AHMED TINUBU:

The new president must look for quick solution to alleviate the imminent difficulty in the Nigerian society after the removal of the fuel subsidy, in order to assist the citizens, understand that subsidy removal is goodness and happiness for them and not an evil nor misery for them.

That President should focus on he following three important matters:

1. Stability of security: The Messenger, (Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon him) said: “Whoever among you becomes safe in his flock, healthy in his body, and has food for the day, then it is as if It is as if the whole world were brought to him.” (Bukhari)

2. A Prosperous Economy: Nigeria is a rich country that Allah has blessed with many riches, many different minerals, great experts, and brilliant knowledgeable people. But the problem of Nigeria is the lack of gratitude and appreciation of what Allah has bestowed, on the part of the leaders and the subjects. As Allah Almighty described a village in His Holy Book: (وَضَرَبَ اللهُ مَثَلاً قَرْيَةً كَانَتْ ءَامِنَةً مُطْمَئِنَّةً يَأْتِيهَا رِزْقُهَا رَغَداً مِّنْ كُلِّ مَكَانٍ فَكَفَرَتْ بِأَنْعُمِ اللهِ فَأَذَاقَهَا اللهُ لِبَاسَ الْجُوعِ وَالْخَوْفِ بِمَا كَانُوا يَصْنَعُونَ) “And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad SAW) which they (its people) used to do.” (An-Naahl: 112).

3- Fighting corruption: It was as if Nigeria had become the home of corruption in all its financial and moral ramifications, and it had become a profitable systematic business, so President Muhammadu Buhari came to fight it, and the corrupt people resisted his government with all force and energy. And we ask Allah for the elected president Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to help him and to guide him to the truth and to a straight path.

APPRECIATING THE POLICE EFFORT IN ACTIVATING THE CONSTITUTIONAL RULING AGAINST PRANKSTERS/SKIT MAKER:

We appreciate the efforts of the police in activating this law, as it is in accordance with the teachings of Islam. Islam forbids the use of lies to make people laugh, and the Lawgiver (Allah) also forbids everything that leads to scaring and terrorizing people in the community. He, peace be upon him, said: “Woe unto the one who tells a lie to make people laugh. Woe unto him, woe unto him.” (Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmidhi). The Messenger of Allah () said: “None of you should take the property of his brother in amusement (i.e. jest), nor in earnest. … If anyone takes the staff of his brother, he should return it.” (Abu Dawud). And what we see on social media these days is a violation that must be controlled.

OUR MESSAGE TO THE MUSLIM SCHOLARS AND IMAMS:

Dear scholars and Imams of the Muslims, upon you is the task of admonishment and guidance day and night, along the east and west, to individuals and groups, especially on the need to be upright upon the guidance of Islam, that is, on the religion of Allah, the Almighty, and on the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, including piety and maintaining trust in Allah, the Exalted.

The Almighty says: (وَأَلَّوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُمْ مَاءً غَدَقًا) (Had the deniers followed the Right Way, We would have certainly granted them abundant rain to drink) [Al-Jinn: 72/16]. (Surely those who say, “Our Lord is Allah,” and then remain steadfast, the angels descend upon them,1 ˹saying,˺ “Do not fear, nor grieve. Rather, rejoice in the good news of Paradise, which you have been promised. We are your supporters in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. There you will have whatever your souls desire, and there you will have whatever you ask for: an accommodation from the All-Forgiving, Most Merciful ˹Lord˺.”) [Fussilat: 30-32]

And about piety, and reliance on Allah, the Almighty says: (And whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them, and provide for them from sources they could never imagine. And whoever puts their trust in Allah, then He ˹alone˺ is sufficient for them. Certainly Allah achieves His Will. Allah has already set a destiny for everything.) [Al-Talaq: 2-3].

OUR MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH OF OUR TIME:

It is said that the youth are the future of every nation, and if you want to know the future of any nation, look at the conditions of the youth of that nation. So, let us ask ourselves, what are the characteristics of the Nigerian youth, male and female? The answer is that many of them prefer laziness to work, and do not see good as good, rather they see evil as good. Thus you see them indulging in alcohol, drugs of various kinds, adultery, homosexuality, bestiality, nudity and wanton display of ornaments, giving preference to sedition and corruption, Yahoo Yahoo, the Yahoo Plus, 419, and multiple electronic crimes, kidnapping for ransom, and so on. Our message to them all is that they should repent unto Allah with sincere repentance, because the consequences of their actions are absurd and the fate of their conditions will be misery in this world and the Hereafter. But if they repent unto Allah in sincerity, they will find Allah, Forgiving, and Merciful. The Almighty says: (إِلَّا مَنْ تَابَ وَآمَنَ وَعَمِلَ عَمَلًا صَالِحًا فَأُولَئِكَ يُبَدِّلُ اللَّهُ سَيِّئَاتِهِمْ حَسَنَاتٍ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا) “Except for those who repent and believe and do righteous deeds, for those will Allah replace their evil deeds with good ones, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful” [Al-Furqan: 70]

SECOND KHUTBAH

All praises are due to Allah who made brotherhood in faith a prerequisite for the validity of the faith of a Muslim servant. The Exalted says: (إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ) “The believers are but one brotherhood, so make peace between your brothers. And be mindful of Allah so you may be shown mercy.” [Al-Hujurat: 10]. Peace and blessings be upon the most honorable of the Messengers who said in his noble hadith: “None of you is a believer, until he loves for his brother what he loves for himself.” and for his family, companions and those who follow them in kindness until the Day of Judgment.

Thereafter,

We ask Allah, the Almighty to make security prevail in Palestine, Sudan, Syria, Kashmir, Burma, Egypt and other Muslim countries.

ADVICES FOR WOMEN:

When the Prophet finished his sermon for the men, he would go to the women to admonish them saying: “O ye women, Fear Allah, for I look through the Fire and saw that the most of its inhabitants are women.”

Dear women of the believers, Allah says:

(The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just, and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise.” 9:71

” O Muslim women, you represent half of the nation, or even more, therefore fear Allah in all your duties, be good to your children by giving them sound Islamic education, struggle with valour to train your children properly for success, because women have most impact on their children than the father. Be good to your husbands, guard your honour and theirs, spend provisions judiciously, and care for the rights of their relatives, guests and their neighbours. The Prophet (pbuh) said: “If a woman observes her five daily prayers, fasts the month (of Ramadan) and makes the pilgrimage to the house of her Lord, and preserves her privacy and obeys her husband, it will be said to her: “Enter Paradise from any of the doors you wish” narrated by Ahmad and Tabarani.

And he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “O women! Give alms, for I looked into the Fire and found that most of its inhabitants were women, disbelieving). Then a woman got up and said: O Messenger of God! Disbelieving in Allah? The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “No, they display ingratitude to their husbands, for if one of you does good to her for forty years, then mistreats her once; she will say : I never get a favor from you”-  Act of ingratitude and denial but this is how Allah created women- Allah created her from the rib bone, and the most crooked of the rib bones is at its top. if you straighten it, you break it, and if you enjoy it, you enjoy it even if it is crookedness.”

Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
