BEING THE FIFTH SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF SHAWWAL DATED 30TH SHAAWWAL 1442 AH (11TH JUNE, 2021 CE)
GUARDING THE EARS FROM FORBIDDEN THINGS
All praises belong be to Allah, the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing, the Most-Forgiving, the Most Merciful, the One Who created all creation to worship Him, and He made His signs obvious to them so they could uphold His Oneness. He bestowed upon them His blessings so that they might be grateful to Him. He sent messengers to them with the clear Light as bearers of good tidings and warnings. I praise Him – Glory be to Him – a lot of pure blessed praise. I bear witness also that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone. He has no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. May the Blessings of Allah and a great deal of Peace be upon him, his family and his companions.
Thereafter…
(يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ وَلا تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَأَنْتُمْ تَسْمَعُونَ (20) وَلا تَكُونُوا كَالَّذِينَ قَالُوا سَمِعْنَا وَهُمْ لَا يَسْمَعُونَ (21) إِنَّ شَرَّ الدَّوَابِّ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ الصُّمُّ الْبُكْمُ الَّذِينَ لَا يَعْقِلُونَ (22) وَلَوْ عَلِمَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ خَيْرًا لأسْمَعَهُمْ وَلَوْ أَسْمَعَهُمْ لَتَوَلَّوْا وَهُمْ مُعْرِضُونَ) [الأنفال: 20-23]

"O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger, and turn not away from Him while you are hearing. And be not like those who say: "We have heard," but they hear not. Verily, the worst of living creatures with Allah are the deaf and the dumb (the disbelievers), who understand not. Had Allah known of any good in them, He would indeed have made them listen; and even if He had made them listen, they would but have turned away with aversion". [Al-Anfal: 20-23]
Oh servants of Allaah! There is a great blessing that people are unaware of and take for granted, but which whoever has lost it would know, and whomever for whom it is weakened feels the difficulty of its weakness. It is the sense of hearing or rather by Allah, the blessing of hearing. It is the means by which man is aware of what is being said around him and he hears. And if it is missing, the person is cut off from people, and he seems absent even when he is present among them and with them.
)"وَاللَّهُ أَخْرَجَكُمْ مِنْ بُطُونِ أُمَّهَاتِكُمْ لَا تَعْلَمُونَ شَيْئًا وَجَعَلَ لَكُمُ السَّمْعَ وَالأبْصَارَ وَالأفْئِدَةَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ" (النحل: 78)(
"Allaah brought you out of the bellies of your mothers. You do not know anything and gave you hearing and sight and thinking facilities so that you may be grateful" (al-Nahl: 78).
Hearing is the path to awareness and knowledge. It is the largest gateway to the heart, and the one who loses his hearing is the worse than the one who loses his sight.
As a result of the importance of hearing, the Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) used to pray to Allah for wellness in his body, in his hearing and in his sight when he slept and when he woke up. It has been narrated that ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakrah, that he said to his father: "Oh my father, I hear you supplicating every day: "Oh Allaah, make me well in my body, Oh Allaah make me well in my hearing, Oh Allah, make me well in my seeing, there’s no god but you" repeating it three times in the morning and three times in the evening" . He said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) supplicating with those, and I like to follow his Sunnah" (Abu Dawood). Despite the fact that wellness in the body is inclusive of wellness in hearing and sight, the particular mention of hearing and sight by mentioning them after generalizing, is an indication of more importance of these two senses.
Allah, the Almighty and Most High, has commanded is to listen, and He the Most High said: ("وَاسْمَعُوا وَأَطِيعُوا") “And fear Allah and listen” (Al-Ma’idah: 108) and He said: ("وَاسْمَعُوا وَأَطِيعُوا") “Listen and obey” (Al-Taghabun: 14), ie listening in a way that leads to awareness, understanding, accepting and responding to the call of Allah. Our believing brothers among the Jinns when they heard the words of Allah, they understood the meaning of the words. Allah Almighty said about them: ("ِإِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا * يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ") “…We heard a wonderful Qur’an that guides to righteousness, so we believed in it” (Al-Jinn: 1-2). So their hearing of Allah’s words is connected to belief and a response. And the statement of the believers when verses of Allah are recited to them: "We heard and we obeyed". So listening should result in obedience to Allah, and likewise, hearing should result in understanding the words of Allah, Glory be to Him, and the words of His Messenger.
Oh servants of Allah! The people propagating falsehood fight the truth with various means, until they make it (the truth) look like falsehood in the eyes and ears of the people. If the early ones stuffed their ears with cotton so that they would not hear the truth, some ears today have been stuffed with the means of vain talk, distraction and preoccupation with haraam from hearing the truth and, (the voice of) the people of truth. Allaah Almighty described the people of the fire, saying:
("وَلَقَدْ ذَرَأْنَا لِجَهَنَّمَ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ الْجِنِّ وَالإِنسِ لَهُمْ قُلُوبٌ لاَّ يَفْقَهُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْيُنٌ لاَّ يُبْصِرُونَ بِهَا وَلَهُمْ آذَانٌ لاَّ يَسْمَعُونَ بِهَا" (الأعراف: 179))
"We have created for hell many of the Jinn and of Mankind; they have heart and they discern not therewith; they have eyes and they see not therewith; they have ears and they hear not therewith; they are like cattle, nay, more misguided, for they are heedless (or care not)" (al-A’raaf: 179). Why do they not you hear? Is it because they do not have ears? They have ears but do not hear the Truth with it because of hearing the things that deter from the Truth and the deter from remembrance Allah, ie listening to and hearing the Shaytaan. That is music. Allah said to Shaytaan:
)"وَاسْتَفْزِزْ مَنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ مِنْهُم بِصَوْتِكَ وَأَجْلِبْ عَلَيْهِم بِخَيْلِكَ وَرَجِلِكَ وَشَارِكْهُمْ فِي الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَوْلَادِ وَعِدْهُمْ وَمَا يَعِدُهُمُ الشَّيْطَانُ إِلَّا غُرُورًا" (الإسراء: 64)(
"And mislead those whom you can among them with your voice, and raise an army against them with your cavalry and infantry, and be their partner in wealth and children, and give them promises”; and Satan does not promise them except with deception" (al-Israa: 64).
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “We and others have witnessed how heavy the Qur’aan is on the people of music, those who listen to it, and their shouting at the reciter if it is too long for them, and their hearts not benefiting from what is read, not being agitated or being humbled".
Music and musical instruments have a great effect on the soul, as it distracts from listening to Words of Allah and being influenced by it, and makes corrupt and immoral speech and action easier for those who listen to it. Allaah said:
)ومن الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله بغير علم ويتخذها هزواً أولئك لهم عذاب مهين، وإذا تتلى عليه آياتنا ولى مستكبراً كأن لم يسمعها كأنَّ في أذنيه وقراً فبشره بعذاب أليم"(
"And among the people are those who buy idle talk to stray from the path of Allah without knowledge and take it in jest. Those will have a humiliating punishment. And if Our verses were recited to him and he turned away arrogantly, as if he had not heard them, as if there was deafness in his ears, so give him good tidings of a painful punishment” (Luqman: 6-7). Ibn Mas’uud (may Allah be pleased with him) said concerning the meaning of "vain talk" in that verse: "by Allah beside Who there is no other god, it is music". The Prophet (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) informed us that people will come at the end of time to consider musical instruments permissible. So he, (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “There will be people among my nation who will make free music, silk, alcohol, and musical instruments lawful” (Bukhari). Ibn al-Qayyim said: “What we and others have witnessed, and we knew from experience, is that no musical instruments and entertainment instruments appeared among a people and became widespread among them, and they worked with them except that Allaah empowered the enemy over them, and they were afflicted by drought and famine, and the rulers of evil.” "Allaah Almighty said:
وَلَقَدْ مَكَّنَّاهُمْ فِيمَا إِنْ مَكَّنَّاكُمْ فِيهِ وَجَعَلْنَا لَهُمْ سَمْعًا وَأَبْصَارًا وَأَفْئِدَةً فَمَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُمْ سَمْعُهُمْ وَلَا أَبْصَارُهُمْ وَلَا أَفْئِدَتُهُمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِذْ كَانُوا يَجْحَدُونَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَحَاقَ بِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ) [الأحقاف: 26]
"And We had firmly established them in a (prosperity and) power which We have not given to you (ye Quraish!) and We had endowed them with (faculties of) hearing, seeing, heart and intellect: but of no profit to them were their (faculties of) hearing, sight, and heart and intellect, when they went on rejecting the Signs of Allah; and they were (completely) encircled by that which they used to mock at!" (Al-Ahqaaf: 26).

SECOND SERMON
All Praises are due to Allah, whose hearing encompasses all things. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, He has no partner. And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, his companions, and may he be blessed more.
As to what follows,
So fear Allah dear servants of Allah regarding what you listen to and what you say, emanating from you or what you relate from others through whatever means. The ruling of what is listened to is in accordance with the content. If what is listened to is loved by Allah, it could be obligatory or permissible. But if Allah dislikes it, then it is forbidden. And if the Sharia is silent over it, then it is allowable content.
Among the blame worthy things that is listened to, which Allah forbids is the reason why Allah humiliated a group of people in His Book, so He said: (وَفِيكُمْ سَمَّاعُونَ لَهُمْ" (التوبة: 47). “And among you are those who listen to them” (Al-Tawbah: 47). The meaning of ‘those who listen to them’ is those who respond to them. Some Muslims today, pay attention to the enemies of Allah, the Exalted, and they listen to their falsehood, they listen to their propaganda against the callers to Islam, they listen to the doubtful matters they pedal around about the religion. They listen to the instructions which contains the destruction of the religion, and what divides the ranks of the Muslims, Allah has warned against leaning towards them, and listening to them.

Allah has described the Jews saying: (سَمَّاعُون لِلْكَذِبِ أَكَّالُونَ لِلسُّحْتِ) “They are avid listeners to falsehood, devourers of what is unlawful” (Al-Tawbah: 42). Meaning: they listen to false sayings and lies. The hypocrites wished to harm the messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and they said about him: “He is an ear”, that is, listener to every saying, whoever swears to him, he believes him, and whoever inserts a word against him, he accepts him. So Allah pick their words, as refutation against them, he said:
)وَمِنْهُمُ الَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ النَّبِيَّ وَيَقُولُونَ هُوَ أُذُنٌ قُلْ أُذُنُ خَيْرٍ لَكُمْ يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ وَيُؤْمِنُ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ(
“ And among them are those who abuse the Prophet and say, "He is an ear. "Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you that believes in Allah and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those who believe among you." And those who abuse the Messenger of Allah – for them is a painful punishment.” (Al-tawbah: 61)

Yes, the prophet- peace be upon him is the ear of goodness to people, he listen to the revelation, then he conveys it to you, and in it is your goodness and your well being, He is a good ear that listens to you with politeness and does not accuse you by deceiving you, and does not take you for your innocence, he believes in Allah and believes everything that He reveals to him, and believes in the believers, so he he has trust in them, because he knows their sincerity of faith that protects them from lies, distortion and hypocrisy. (وَرَحْمَةٌ لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ) (And mercy for those among you who believe) [Al-Tawbah: 61] He holds their hand towards good and keeps them away from evil. (وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْذُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ) “And those who abuse the Messenger of Allah – for them is a painful punishment.” (Al-tawbah: 61)
