PRACTICAL MEANS OF ACHIEVING SINCERE REPENTANCE

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST BENEFICENT THE MOST MERCIFUL

BEING THE SECOND SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF MUHARRAM 13TH/ MUHARRAM 1441 AH (13TH SEPTEMBER, 2019 CE)

PRACTICAL MEANS OF ACHIEVING SINCERE REPENTANCE

All praises belong to Allah whose mercy encompasses everything, the One who has opened the door of repentance to those that have committed sins to turn and go back to Him (their Lord). He has promised to forgives His slaves who seek penitence. I testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, the One (and only), who has no partner, who said in his well-guarded revelation: “Oh you who believe! Repent unto Allah (with) a sincere repentance. It may be that your Lord would wipe away your evil deeds and admit you innto Paradise under which rivers flow” (At-Tahreem:8). I testify also that Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) is Allah’s slave and messenger. Allah guided (His) creature with him and directed them through him to the path of success in this world and the hereafter. He (Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) said in his noble saying: “All sons of Aadam are liable to errors, and the best of those that commit errors are those that repent”. Oh Allah! Let you Benedictions and Peace and Blessings be on him and his household, his companions and on all those that follow them in goodness till the day of Judgement.

Thereafter… Servants of Allah! Last Friday, we discussed some of the lessons that we can derive from the Hijrah (Migration) of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and so today we are are going to be talking about some of the ways and practical means that we have established to free oneself of sins and achieve repentance unto Allah in the beginning of a new year.

1. Worshiping Allah (in accordance) with His Names and Atttibutes

This here is the core (soul) of Taoheed (faith in the Oneness of Allah). To know Allah witth His Names and Attributes, not only in theory, but rather knowing Him whole heartedly with reverence, with a heart that loves and gives magnificence to His Lord (Allah), the Most High and Majestic. Behold! the heart has a number of ways by which it experiences the knowledge (of Allah), it would suffice to mention three of them:

First is the perspective of Enlightenment, Respect and Honour: This is about the respect of Allah, the Most Perfect and Exalted, against disobeying Himwhile He sees and hears you. It (the heart) feels the might of Allah and His watch over him. It is mindful and shy of the angels that Allah has compelled to watch over you, and the two angels that never leaves you, both recording your acts of obedience and transgression.

Second perspective is that of Love: If you really love Allah, then you will not disobey Him, because really, a lover is submissive to the one he loves!

Third is the perspective of Anger: The perspective of (being aware) of the anger and retribution of Allah. This is so because, when a servant continues in sins, Allah, the Exalted Lord becomes angry, and when this happens, nothing remains in favour of this weak servant. It (the heart) ponders on the threat and warning of Allah on the various punishments in the grave, in the Standing before Allah and in the Fire! How will Allah punish the adulterer and fornicator? How will He punish the alcohol drinker and hard-drug users? How will He punish the one that eats riba (usury), and the tale-bearer and other sinners and evil doers, like it was affirmed in the event of al-Israa wal-Miraaj?

2. Knowledge

People commit sins as a result of either of two reasons: Ignorance or self-desire (whim). The remedy for ignorance is useful knowledge that is rooted in the heart and yields good deeds. Knowledge here would include: Knowledge of Allah and His Names and Attributes as mentioned before. The knowledge of the danger of disobedience as well as the knowledge of the virtue/benefit of repentance – knowing that repentance results in Allah loving a servant, being happy with him and making him enter al-Jannah.

3. Striving against Oneself

Strive against you own self and be patient (in holding back) from sins. If you say like some youths say that “it’s hard, I can’t…, I’m used to these things…”, then I say to you: You have to be patient and remember that patient in this life is much easier, much lesser than torment in the hereafter.

4. Realizing the Good Things of this Life and Hereafter that Sins makes you Lose as well as the bad name that comes with it: It is sufficient to put this in perspective by looking at the loss of eeman, less than an atom weight of which is better than the whole world and everything inside it! And it indeed has been authentically narrated from the prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him) that he said: “A fornicator/adulterer is not a believer while he’s engaged in the act”. Some of the companions said: “Eeman is removed from him until it remains only something like a shade over his head. If he repents, then eeman is returned to him”.
5. Sensing/Realizing the Recompense

This is what Allah, the most High and Exalted has promised in recompensation for whosoever left for Allah’s sake what He has made haraam, and restrains himself from his whims and desires. Allah says: “…but as for whoever feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from (unlawful) inclination … Then indeed, Paradise will be his refuge.” (An-Naziaat : 40-41).

6. Reflecting on the Qur’aan and Working with it

The Qur’aan is the soul of hearts, and it is the cure for it from all pleasurable lusts and confusions/doubts.

7. Locking all doors that lead to sin:

Such as companionship, loneliness, bad magazines, licentious films, obscene sites, use of the internet, and others among the means and ways of obscenity. Such is putting the prey beside the predator and pouring fuel intothe fire, then to begin to yell for help; come to me! Save me!!.

8. Assist yourself with good environment:

Man is weak in isolation but strong with his brothers, This is why a killer of hundred was advised to leave the town and travel to another town wherein people worship Allah, in the sound hadith. We will say change a bad friend, change your phone number, change your house if possible and even change your pathway.

9. Remembering Allah’s favours:

Allah says: If ye would count up the favours of Allah, never would ye be able to number them (Surat Nahl: 18). His favours on us are numerous, security in the countries, good health, enjoyment and good companionship with wife and children, different food and drink. We pray Allah make us appreciate His favours

10. Follow evil deed with good deed:

According to the word of Allah: “Righteousness cleanses sins. Doing the forbidding things doesn’t justify shunning obedience and righteousness.

That is why we say if Shaytan tried you with sins, stop him by doing good like Solah,, dua, dhikr, sodaqah, etc. Ponder upon the love in Allah in the story of a woman as recorded in Sahih Al-Bukhari and Muslim: Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “While a dog was going round a well and was about to die of thirst, an Israeli prostitute saw it and took off her shoe and watered it. So Allah forgave her because of that good deed.” Ibn Al Qayyim said the lights of Tawheed (Islamic monotheism)burnt the fornication in her and Allah forgive her. Tirmidhi and Nasi’i related the story of that great companion, Abu Al-Yasar, Kab bn Amr Al Ansoriywith a good chain. The origin of the story is in Sahih Al-Bukhari. “This companion was selling dates in Madinah. There came to him a very beautiful woman to purchase some dates from him. Her husband had gone out as a warrior in the cause of Allaah. The devil whispered to him and embellished the thought of cohabiting with the woman to him. Thus he said to the woman: “Verily, there are better dates than these at home”. She then went with him to his house. Behold he began to kiss and romance her without reaching sexual intercourse. Yes, this companion has fallen into this sin in a state of weakness. What then happened? The entire world became narrowed against him, and the sin overwhelmed him, so he went first to Abu Bakr, and told him what happened. Abu Bakr said to him: “Keep it secret, repent, and do not tell anyone, but Abu Al-Yasr did not be patient. Thereafter he went to ‘Umar. Umar said to him; “Keep it secret, repent, and do not tell anyone”. But he was not satisfied until he went to meet the messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and he informed him. He said: “Do you relate with the wife of a warrior in the way of Allah in his absence in this manner? At this moment, Abu Al-Yasarbecame heart broken, to the extent that he wished he had not accepted Islam until that moment, infact he feels he is an inmate of fire. Then the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) remained silent for long bending his head towards his chest, until Allah revealed to him: ((وَأَقِمْ الصَّلَاةَ طَرَفَيْ النَّهَارِ وَزُلَفًا مِنْ اللَّيْلِ ، إن الحسنات يذهبن السيئات ، ذلك ذِكْرَى لِلذَّاكِرِينَ) سورة هود 114) And establish regular prayers at the two ends of the day and at the approaches of the night: For those things, that are good remove those that are evil” (Surah Hud: 114) The prophet read it to Abu Al-Yasar and he was happy. Some companions then asked the Prophet if the verse is restricted to the man alone or to other people and the Prophet replied that it is for all people in general.

11. Remember death:

Death will come suddenly, fear evil end, remember that If you  postponed repentance, you may die in sin and you will be raise among humanity with the sin, my beloved brother, repent, seek for repentance before death overtakes you, don’t delay tawbah, my brother, sit with your soul and reflect on your condition. And say:oh my soul, repent, before you die, don’t you know that death is your appointment, grave is your house, sand is your mat/bed,ant is your enjoyment/friend?are you not afraid that angel of death come and meet you on sin?

12. Visitation to the grave:

As it is sunnah according  to the prophet: I used to forbid you from visiting the grave, you can now visit it, it will remind you of the hereafter) If Shaytan take control of you and drive your soul to the one that commands evil, go to the graveyards, stay in that house, and ponder that one day you will dwel therein  alone and you will only be there with your deeds, if it is good deed it will be your friend and put light in your grave and it will be a pond of paradise but if it is evil deed, your grave will be in serious  darkness, tighten over you and it will be a hole of Hell.

13. Remember the day of Judgement and its turmoil: As is presented in the Qur’an and the sound Sunnah, and in the books of soul melting and purification including lectures and sermons

14) Supplication and an expression of total humility before Allah ..

Even if you remain on sin, even if your sins are huge. It has been firmly established in the collection of Tirmidhi from the hadeeth of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah ( peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: (God Almighty said: ““O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me, and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as it.”

15) Do not despair if you repent and then go back to it:

Do not leave repentance at all, do not say that I repented and then returned to sins, there is no hope of repentance. Rather repent even if you return to the sin repeatedly, so that the devil is defeated. However, I hereby warn you as I am afraid for you, over returning to sins, you can not guarantee death overtaking you, before you could repent. You can never guarantee you would not become addicted to sins, to the extent that the heart become sealed, and it would not readily crave for repentance.

Dear Servants of Allah, repentance is the Ark of salvation, it is the Ark of Nuh and those messengers after him, and whenever the ship comes close to the sinners, the master calls them: “Embark therein; in the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.” (Surah Hud: 41). He who embarks is saved but he who lays back is destroyed. We ask Allaah to hasten our repentance before our death, and to grant us a sincere repentance solely to earn His pleasure.

The second sermon

Praise be to Allaah. The Lord of the Worlds who created man from male and female and made them as peoples and tribes that they may know one another and cooperate on righteousness but not to fight or to cooperate in sin and aggression. He ordered Muslims to coexist peacefully with non-Muslims. Allah says:

(لا ينهاكم الله عن الذين لم يقاتلوكم في الدين ولم يخرجوكم من دياركم أن تبروهم وتقسطوا إليهم إن الله يحب المقسطين) سورة ممتحنة

“Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes – from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.” (Mumtahibah: 8)

The World Peace Day is celebrated on September 21st every year since 1981. A day dedicated for the remembrance and honour of global solidarity to build a world of peace. The factors militating against  peace are numerous, which cannot be fought by a single country. The United Nations’ Secretary General, Antonio Guterres made the declaration to unites all governments and civil societies in the world to work for peace through dialogue and an end to war and conflict.

Islam is the religion of peace: The law of Islam came as a just mediator in the cause of peace and war, combining the two matters in the best of legislation, and noblest of elucidation. It (Islam) has made peace the foundation of the relationship between Muslims and non-Muslims, and it views war as the echo of aggression and the preservation of religions, lives, lineage and properties.

This is evidenced by several things, the greatest of which is that Islam is the religion, and between it and peace exists one root in terms of language and by the meaning, even Allah, the exalted, referred to Islam as peace in the Qur’an, Allah says: (O you who have believed, enter into Islam completely [and perfectly]) [Al-Baqarah: 208]. Meaning, enter into Islam. The path of Islam have also been named as (Subul-s-salaam) ways of peace, as mentioned thus:

{يَهْدِي بِهِ اللَّهُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ رِضْوَانَهُ سُبُلَ السَّلَامِ } [المائدة: 16

By which Allah guides those who pursue His pleasure to the ways of peace (Suratul Maidah: 16)

In the same way, Allah, the Exalted is called by it as As-Salaam. As in the verse: {هُوَ اللَّهُ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْمَلِكُ الْقُدُّوسُ السَّلَامُ الْمُؤْمِنُ}

He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith.” (Hasher: 23). It is reported in the Sunnah, the following prayer: “O Allah you are The Perfect Peace, and you are the source of peace, glory be to You, You are the Owner of Majesty and Honour.” Allah, the Exalted also refers to the eternal abode prepared for therighteous slaves as Daru-s- Salaam; The Abode of Peace. Allah says: ({لَهُمْ دَارُ السَّلَامِ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ} [الأنعام:(127])

“For them will be the Home of Peace with their Lord.” (Suratul An’aam: 127). Also Allah says:

{وَاللَّهُ يَدْعُو إِلَى دَارِ السَّلَامِ} [يونس: 25]

“And Allah invites to the Home of Peace and guides whom He wills to a straight path” (Surah Yunus: 25)

The greetings shared by Muslims among themselves in the world and the Hereafter is of peace, that is for the Muslim to say to his brother by saying: “May the Peace, mercy and blessing of Allah be upon you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) enjoined Muslims to spread this peace of greeting among themselves, by saying: “Spread the peace among yourselves.” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also described a Muslims as someone whom the Muslims are safe from (the evil) of his tongue and hand.” (Tirmidhi). Thus peace remains the great link among Muslims.
