In The Name Of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful

Praise be unto Allah who decreed fasting on believers making it guard from sins and fire. Allah says

“Hajj is (during) well-known months, so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj. And whatever good you do – Allah knows it. And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is fear of Allah. And fear Me, O you of understanding.)” (2: 197).  We praise and thank Him, seek His help and guidance, forgiveness and repentance. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and deeds. Whoever Allah guides is guided and whoever He misled none will mislead Him. I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without partner, and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger who says: “The acceptable hajj has no other reward except paradise” (Agreed upon). May Allah bless him and his families and all his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the day of recompense.

I admonish you and myself on the fear of Allah because that is the main objective for establishing the rites of hajj and all worships in Islam. Allah says:

(And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days – there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [until the third] – there is no sin upon him – for him who fears Allah. And fear Allah and know that unto Him you will be gathered.) (2:203).

Dear faithful, this is the first sermon in Dhul-Qa’dah- the second of the month of hajj. For the last two weeks, we have discussed issues connected to the pilgrimage including: History of the pilgrimage and the virtues of Makkah and Madinah and the etiquettes of relating with both. Today we shall focus on the Preparation for the Hajj.

Are you prepared for the Hajj?

Dear Muslims, millions of Muslims troop to the holy sites annually, including those incapacitated by excuse, this is because Allah instills the love of the sacred sanctuary in the hearts and made it a place of return for people as mentioned by the Exalted lord thus: (وَإِذْ جَعَلْنَا الْبَيْتَ مَثَابَةً لِّلنَّاسِ وَأَمْناً“And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security.” (2: 125)

That means: A place of return to which they will not be tired from. Obviously this is one of the signs of Allah, that every person that professes the word of Tawheed would long towards it, irrespective of the level of his sins even where that would reach the extent of the skies. Furthermore, looking at the significant sign in the great love a Muslim has towards this holy site, then, it is worthwhile for him to make adequate preparation for complementing the extent of his love for this divine symbol. This preparation covers the following areas:

1- Spiritual preparation: This is to purify the intention of hajj for Allah alone detached from quest for show off and fame. Ibn Taimiyah says in his definition of Ikhlas thus: The righteous scholars mention something about resoluteness on Tawheed and achieving sincerity in the religion as a whole: to mean that the slave would not turn to anyone other than Allah, and would not look upto anything other than Him, not out of love for him, nor for the fear of him, nor hoping for him. Rather, the heart is detached away from all creatures, free of them. He would not look unto them except in the light of Allah. He hears by the truth, he sees by the truth, he walks by the truth …”

And he should meditate and reflect on every station he sees and witness, they are undoubtedly prestige stations that should not be overlooked. I will present a beautiful expression made by the Muslim German ambassador-Murad Hoffman in his first pilgrimmage experience having been engulfed by the awesomeness of the ancient sanctuary, he said in his book: “The road to Makkah” (p. 15): We began to circumambulate around the Kaabah which is faced by billions of people in their daily prayers, and I did not lose mind throughout the Tawaaf that we were facing towards Allah in our tawaaf. I remembered that this house- in the youth days of Muhammad (peace be upon him)- was filled with idols … until he said: The book of “Ahmed von Denver” helped me to link the rituals of Hajj outwardly and inwardly; physically and spiritually that the approach to Allah in Islam is not restricted to the soul only or the body only it is either that it is all present or not to be at all, and this is the product of Tawheed, can’t we say that the Ihram refers to death, and that the tawaaf submits one to Allah? Is Zamzam not the life? Or is the day of Arafah not making us anticipate the resurrection? And Muzdalifah is the darkness that precedes the new day? And Muna represents the fulfillment through the sacrifice of the animals of sacrifice? And the putting off of the Ihram clothes in Mina doesn’t it mean a new life and the throwing of pebbles symbolize the struggle of life against all evil, but the unification of Allah is the centre of life). We call on our beloved to read something from the Hajj of the Salaf and the generations after them, so that they will enlighten their vision and sharpen their minds.

2 –Knowledge/Educational preparedness: It is the knowledge of the provisions of Hajj before the beginning of the season enough to enable the pilgrim to perform the rites in the required manner and corresponding to the sunnah. There is no Muslim country, especially the Gulf States and Arab countries that does not establish specialized courses in this direction. And for those that could not attend such courses should have himself with getting across with his brothers through the internet, listening to tapes, reading useful booklets or attending seminars for this occasion.

3 – Physical readiness: This is to make adequate provision that would enable him gain complete hajj without deficiency. How many times that things that violate some of the duties of Hajj or its pillars because of lack of budget for the trip and the majority of those who proceed to hajj individually without joining their country’s entourage … Part of physical readiness is losingthe reservations and the passports and assurance of its validity, including the provision of the necessary things such as food and drink and additional contingencies where the pilgrim stays in its Ihram for three to four days, he could be forced to change his Ihram due to any of the circumstance affecting its cleanliness, and he must take precaution at Muzdalifah, the night could be cold, he is obliged to cover himself with blanket provided it does not cover his head.

4 – Psychological preparation: It is a preparation the mind psychologically by getting to know the atmosphere of the Hajj, realizing that it has some hardship, crowd congestion and fatigue. He may be hurt by some of his brothers because of stampede or perceive some bad odour coming from some of them, or experience the delay of hisgroup owing to some circumstance … or experience some harsh treatment from some, he should meet all that with patience and desire for reward, and smile and good manner  without going for revenge. He should also refrain from using his tongue in vain and vulgar talks or abuse. This is what the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) calls us to saying: “Whoever visit this house, and did not commit sexual relations nor disobey, he shall return as the day his mother gave birth to him.” (Bukhari)

5 – Health preparedness: This is taking the necessary vaccinations and medicines (first aid kit), and the medical specialists should be asked about such matters. Also there should be caution regarding doubtful foods, and ensure the consumption of clean food that are well covered or protected. It should be noted that children need special care in this regard.

6 – Religious readiness: This is to distance away from all manifestations of polytheism and innovations that undermine the Hajj, such as clingingto the curtain of the Kaabahwith the intention of seeking healing and blessing; or the station of Ibrahim, or to enter into the crowd in order to get to kiss or touch the black stone, or to enter the midst of women as we do we witness some do!
7 – The time management readiness: It is to prepare himself to maximize benefits of all his time for himself or others. He should not spend his time in useless speech, such as slander, ridicule of people and gossip, and excessive or excessive food and drinks especially at expensive places. He should be engaged in useful things including dhikr, recitation of the Qur’an, attending lecture sittings organized by his hajj agents or the Saudi authorities.

The Second Sermon

All praises are due to Allah Who says:

And who are more unjust than those who prevent the name of Allah from being mentioned in His mosques and strive toward their destruction. It is not for them to enter them except in fear. For them in this world is disgrace, and they will have in the Hereafter a great punishment.

( 115 )   And to Allah belongs the east and the west. So wherever you [might] turn, there is the Face of Allah. Indeed, Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” (2: 114-115)

We praise and thank Him. We seek refuge in Him from the evil of our souls and deeds. I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone without partner, and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His servant and Messenger. May Allah bless him and his families and all his companions, and those who follow them in righteousness until the day of recompense.

Dear faithful, it is important for us to mention the issue of our oppressed brothers in Palestine and the closure of the Aqsa Mosque, where they were prevented to pray there. The Jewish Israeli authority mount metal detectors around the mosque and CCTV Cameras to monitor Muslims coming to pray therein. In protest our Muslim brother rejected the development and resolved to pray the five daily prayers in the streets in protest for 11 days. This action Allah used to force the occupying Israeli authority to remove all the installed metal detectors and cameras- Alhamdulillah, the Lord of the worlds.

Oh Allah accept our fast, prayers, bowing and prostration. O Allah ease for us Your remembrance, gratitude to You and sound worship. O Allah make the Qur’an the succor to our hearts, light to our faces, remover of our grief and sorrow. O Allah show us the truth and grant us the wherewithal to follow it, show us falsehood and grant us the wherewithal to desist. O Allah forgive the believers; men and women, and the Muslim men and women, both the living and the deceased, You are All- hearing, most near, answerer of prayers. O Allah make this nation- Nigeria peaceful, safe, generous, with abundant welfare, and all other Muslim nations.
