17th J/Uula 1442 AH(1st JANUARY 2021 CE)
IN THE NAME OF ALLAH THE MOST BENEFICENT THE MOST MERCIFUL
BEING THE THIRD SERMON FOR THE MONTH OF JUMAADAL-UULA DATED 17TH JUMAADAL-UULA 1442 AH (1ST JANUARY, 2021 CE)
RECKONING WITH THE PASSING OF DAYS
All praises belong to Allah, the Subduer, the Enforcer. He ordained the night and day. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, the Most Generous, the Forgiver. I testify also that Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) is His slave and Messenger, a guide and blessing for the whole universe. May the Peace and Blessings of Allah be on him, his household, his companions and all those that follow them in goodness till the Day of Judgment.
Thereafter, fear Allah oh you believers, and make provision from your life for your hereafter, and do a lot of good deeds that you are going to find in the record of your good deeds, “And fear Allah and know that Allah is Seeing of what you do.” (Al-Baqarah: 233).
Servants of Allah! Our sermon today – being the first day of the new Gregorian calendar – will be about reckoning with the passing of days. You see nights and days rolling past, the years roll by and people are caught inbetween forgetfulness and foolishness on one hand and insightfulness and being sensible. Everyone goes about in this world serachig for things he will indeed attain and the ones he wil never attain, and he is completely neglectful of the real objective in which is his happiness in tis life and the hereafter.
Many are the souls that have died without completing his projects that he has plans for such as building projects, or getting married, or finishing studies, or building some leisure or relaxation place. People move about and the destiny moves too, and they are completely unaware!
Servants of Allah! We have finished a calendar year and we have entered another one. We spent a year in which some people were happy while others were sad, some peple lived while others perished, some were healthy, while other were sick, some love one were brought together while other were separated. How may are they of people who are active, living with us with their hopes and ambitions and suddenly dropped dead in in an instant!
So congratulations to whoever live shis life in obedience to Allah, in seeking closeness to his Creator, and guards parts of his body from sins, and is free of the rights of others. This is the real success.
Servants of Allah! Children who used to live in the care of their parents are been made orphans, people who used to drown in their own sins have become guided, and peopel who used to be poor and destitute have become rich! Peopel were born in the past year who now face their future and people died and are now being rewarded according to their deeds. Who among us would take lessons from these and heed admoniton? Almighty Allah said the Truth when He said: “Whoever is within the heavens and earth asks Him; every day He is in [i.e. bringing about] a matter.” (Ar-Rahmaan:29). And Allah Ta’alah says: “Everyone upon it [i.e. the earth] will perish. And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour.” (Ar-Rahmaan:26-27).
Oh you believers! The days and years are but conveyors that we ride to the abode of the hereafter. We transit from this life to the graves and then to our recompense and accounatability, and then standing before Allah Almighty. Ibn Mas’uud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “I do not regret anything like a day that the sun sets upon me reducing my remaining days and I could not increase my good deeds in that day”.
Aliy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “The life of this world is going away from us and the Hereafter is coming towards us. Each of them has its children. So be children of the Hereafter and do not be children of this world”.
Hassan Al-Basri, may Allah be Merciful unto him, used to say: “There is no day upon which the sun rises except that the day calls, saying, ‘Oh children of Aadam, I am a new day and a witness to your deeds. So take advantage of me because when I go away, I will not return until the Day of Resurrection’”. He also said: “Oh son of Aadam! You are are only a bundle of days, when a day goes by, a part of you has gone”.
You that rae in your 40s and 50s, 60s and 70s, what do you remember of your lives? Ibn Qayyim, may Allah be Merciful unto him said: “Humankind is between three periods: past and spent periods; for this he asks Allah for forgiveness in his shortcomings and negligence; then the period that he awaits ie, the future; for this he asks for allah to help him, for this he makes the intention in his mnd to take advantage of it with obedience of Allah, such that even if he doesnt live up to the time, good deed is recorded for him; and then the present period; this he must spend in obedience to Allah because it is als going to become past like other periods before it.”
Now, beloved brethren! A believer must take lessons from the passing of days and deeds, and take advantage of his life and his time, because his time is his most precious wealth.
Time – oh servants of Allah – is the treasure that is opened o the Day of Resurrection and a person will not find anything there except what he did: “And your Lord is
not ever unjust to [His] servants.” (Fusilat:46).
Servants of Allah! On the Day of Ressurection, everybody will read his own poems that he wrote by himself in this nights and days and years (in this life). Allah Ta’alah said: “And [for] every person We have imposed his fate upon his neck, and We will produce for him on the Day of Resurrection a record which he will encounter spread open. [It will be said], “Read your record. Sufficient is yourself against you this Day as accountant.””. (Al-Israa:13-14).
A muslim must take advantage of his life and preoccupy himself with obedience of Allah Ta’alah. And the prophet (Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon him) admonished us to take advantage of our lives before it it is finished, so he (Peace and Blessing of Allah be upon him) said: “reap from five things before five things: your youth ages before your old ages, your health before your sickness, your affluence before your poverty, your free time before youe busy time, and your life before your death.” (Haakim and Bayhaqi).
May Allah bless me and you with the Glorious Qur’aan, and benefit us with what is in it of the verses and admonition and Wise Remembrance. I have said all these that you have heard, I ask Allah’s Forgiveness for me and you, indeed He is the Forgiver, the Most Merciful.
THE SECOND SERMON
All praises are due to Allah, much praise, pure and blessed one. I bear witness that there is no god except Allah alone, He has no partner. I bear witness that our master and prophet, Muhammad is His servant and messenger, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family and companions.
Thereafter, O Muslims, fear Allah, the Exalted and be thankful for His favour upon you, that He guided you to Islam, and He favoured you with Muhammad, the Prophet of Mercy – peace and blessings be upon him – and made you the best of a nation evolved for mankind, if you adhere to this religion and follow the Messenger.
Servants of Allah, take pride in your religion, for your religion is rich in correct belief, just law, and virtuous morals. And know that what some Muslims do when the New Gregorian Year approaches including preparing for it by acquiring gifts, food and the halal and forbidden drinks, clothes and toys, decorating homes, decorating roads and buildings, and staying up on the first night until late night in hotels and bars, on the streets and in houses drinking wine, dancing, obscenity, singing, with prostitutes engaging in fornication and other forbidden practices. The intensity of the prohibition, immorality and ugliness increases where it is done while imitating the Christians.
O brothers in faith, know that participating in the New Year’s celebrations is a participation in a Christian ritual, consequently, expression of joy over their celebration is the expression of joy over the rituals of disbelief, its appearance and lofty height, and in that is a danger to the Muslim’s creed and belief. The Messenger – peace be upon him – was correct when he informed of the appearance of imitators from among his nation, as he said: “The Hour of Resurrection will not come until my nation takes on the way of the generations before her span by span and cubit by cubit (i.e., inch by inch) and it was said: O Messenger of Allah, as the Persians and the Romans? And he said: And who are the people if not those?” (Narrated by Al-Bukhari on the authority of Abu Huraira).
Servants of Allah, do not be deceived by what most of us do, they are ignorant of the truth of Islam, and resisted these innovations and evils that have invaded our communities by not participating in them, and correct your alignment with your religion, as Allah says: “Follow (O mankind), what has been revealed to you from your Lord and do not follow other than Him any allies.” (Al-A’raaf: 3).
Allah also says: “And be not like those who forgot Allah, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.” (Suratul Hashr: 19)
