Thaqofah: Allegations against Islam

Focus: Fundamentalism, Extremism, Terrorism and Jihad

It is unfortunate that we now live in a time where ordinary allegations can be used to justify attacks on an innocent population. We are living in a world of oppression and tyranny where the self-acclaimed superpowers have commissioned a host of orientalists and exploit all available media to accuse the innocents and absolve themselves from their crimes.

It is important to respond to some of these allegations in order to relief Muslims from the psychological warfare launched against them.

Fundamentalism has been portrayed negatively that many people have became oblivious of its actual meaning; persistent use of the word in allegations have also affected editions of lexical dictionaries. Refutation: Fundamentals are the building blocks and the basic tenets upon which something was established; fundamentalism is adherence to the fundamentals. Islam does not tolerate any deviation from its fundamentals.

So invite [O Muhammad] to that [religion of Allah], and remain firmly on a right course as you are commanded and do not follow their inclinations but say, “I have believed in what Allah has revealed of scripture [i.e., the Qur’an], and I have been commanded to do justice among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. For us are our deeds, and for you your deeds. There is no [need for] argument between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and to Him is the [final] destination.”[1]

Say (O Muhammad): “This is my Way; I invite unto Allah with sure knowledge, I and those who follow me. And Exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him.[2]

Fundamental and moderate Muslims

The divinely guided interpretation of the Shariah by the prophet is the surest knowledge. Any other interpretation to justify laxity and negligence under the cover of moderacy is tantamount to misguidance. “Moderate Islam” as promoted by the enemies of Islam is an abuse and a call to misguidance.

The Ummah of Islam is justly balanced, standing firm with justice. Whenever justice necessitates harshness or leniency, it will adjust accordingly.

Unfortunately, many Muslims today have succumbed to the persistent allegations and avoided the most important aspects of their religion, the result of which can be observed from their attitude towards the religion. However, in a quick response by our most intelligent scholars, these allegations do not last long before they fade into the background.

Extreme views and actions are condemned in Islam. From the lifetime of the prophet he has warned and curbed Muslims from going into extreme. Unfortunately, there are some Muslims who still go beyond the fundamentals into extremes; these groups form only a very small percentage of the Muslim population. Refutation: It is not appropriate to base the laws on exceptions; it is unjust to accuse the entire population with acts of the few.

Terrorism is an unjustified act of violence, it is repeatedly condemned in Islam with fixed punishment. However, the enemies have frustrated, brainwashed and mobilized some extremists into acts of terrorism. The acts of these frustrated minorities have been widely publicized to justify counter-attacks whose destructive and deadly effects are mostly borne by the innocent majority of the Muslim population. The enemies have created terrorists from the population to terrorize the population in order to justify oppression and tyranny.

To further justify their acts of oppression and weaken the defense system of Muslims, the enemies exploited the ignorance of Muslim population to portray Jihad as the major motivation for violence and terrorism. It was erroneously promoted that people were forcefully brought to submission under the threat of the sword and Islam was established on the blood of innocent population. Refutation: This allegation can be logically refuted with the fact that people around the globe today embrace Islam in unprecedented manifolds even after the Muslim rulers have lost power. Islam has not gained population growth rate as fast as it was now after it has lost its global leadership.
