THE HARMS OF SINS AND DISOBEDIENCE IN THE SOCIETY

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST GRACIOUS, THE MOST MERCIFUL
THE SECOND FRIDAY KHUTBAH OF THE SACRED MONTH OF MUHARRAM
DATE: 16TH MUHARRAM, 1447 AH (11TH JULY, 2025 CE)
TOPIC: THE HARMS OF SINS AND DISOBEDIENCE IN THE SOCIETY

THE FIRST SERMON

All praise is due to Allah who forgives sins, conceals faults, and relieves distresses. He stretches out His hand at night for the sinner of the day to repent, and stretches out His hand during the day for the sinner of the night to repent and return. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils within ourselves and our evil deeds. Whoever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whoever He allows to stray, none can guide.
I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Allah sent him as a mercy to the worlds. Through him, He opened hearts, illuminated minds, and gave sight to blind eyes, hearing to deaf ears, and life to dead hearts. May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him, his family, and his companions abundantly until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed:
O servants of Allah! I advise you and myself to have taqwa (consciousness and fear of Allah), as Allah the Almighty said:

“يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ حَقَّ تُقَاتِهِ وَلَا تَمُوتُنَّ إِلَّا وَأَنْتُم مُّسْلِمُونَ”
“O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].” Surah Aal ‘Imran, 3:102

Obedience, O servants of Allah, is to comply and follow; while disobedience is to defy and innovate. The worst of affairs are innovations and newly introduced matters, sins, and immoralities. The gravest trials are those of lusts and doubts. So fear Allah in what He has commanded, and stay away from what He has prohibited and rebuked.

O servants of Allah, indeed Allah the Exalted has commanded His servants to obey Him and warned against disobedience. He has clarified in His Book the punishment and destruction that befell those who were open in their sins. The Prophet ﷺ also warned against the consequences of sins and their dangers upon individuals and societies.

O brothers in faith!
This is our second meeting in the Sacred Month of Allah, Muharram. We are living in a time where people have become negligent regarding sins and acts of disobedience. Among the sons and daughters of Muslims today are those who publicly commit sins and immoralities as if nothing had happened. Some belittle sins and become addicted to disobeying the Knower of the unseen. You see such a person present at, promoting, and inviting to places of immorality and shamelessness, openly challenging Allah with sins and transgressions.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ warned against openly committing sins. He said:

“كُلُّ أُمَّتِي مُعَافًى إِلَّا الْمُجَاهِرِينَ”
“All of my Ummah will be forgiven except those who sin openly.” Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim

It is around this dangerous trend that our khutbah today revolves around the topic:
“The Harms of Sins and Disobedience in Society.”

Dear brothers in Islam, whenever sins and immoralities become widespread in a Muslim society, and when transgressions and misdeeds dominate among its members, this becomes a cause for its humiliation and disgrace before all of creation. It was narrated in the Musnad of Ahmad that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Disgrace and humiliation have been placed upon those who oppose my command.”

Thus, honor lies in the fulfillment of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, as Allah the Almighty says:
﴿مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْعِزَّةَ فَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ جَمِيعًا﴾
“Whoever desires honor—then to Allah belongs all honor.” (Surah Al-Fatir, 35:10)

O noble Muslims, Allah, Glorified and Exalted, only commands what entails every good for His servants and what achieves benefit in both this life and the Hereafter. Therefore, sins and disobedience are among the greatest harms to both individuals and nations. Indeed, every evil in this world and the next is rooted in committing vile and destructive acts and transgressions.

Sins and misdeeds—how many blessings have they removed, how many punishments have they brought, how many disgraces and calamities have they caused!

Dear Muslim community,
Sins have disgraceful and condemned consequences which affect both the individual and the collective, harm both the heart and the body, and spread over both worldly life and the Hereafter in ways only Allah knows. Among the most dangerous effects of sins is that they cause harm to everyone in society and bring ruin to the entire community.

Among those grave consequences and negative effects is that sins are a cause of deprivation from sustenance, the spread of poverty, and the removal of blessings from what people are given. It was narrated in the Musnad that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Indeed, a man may be deprived of provision due to a sin he commits.”

“Indeed, a good deed brings brightness to the face, light in the heart, expansion in provision, strength in the body, and love in the hearts of creation. And a bad deed brings darkness to the face, gloom in the heart, weakness in the body, deficiency in provision, and hatred in the hearts of creation.”

When sins and misdeeds become widespread in a community, all matters become difficult, paths become blocked, and people find the doors of goodness and success shut before them, and the means to them hard to attain. This is not surprising, for Allah the Most High says:
﴿وَمَن يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّهُ مِنْ أَمْرِهِ يُسْرًا﴾
“And whoever fears Allah—He will make for him ease in his matter.” (Surah At-Talaq, 65:4)

Sins cause a person to become despicable before his Lord and to fall from His esteem. Al-Hasan al-Basri رحمه الله said:
“They became insignificant to Him, so He allowed them to disobey Him. Had they been honorable to Him, He would have protected them.”

And when a servant becomes insignificant before Allah, no one can honor him, as Allah the Exalted says:
﴿وَمَن يُهِنِ اللَّهُ فَمَا لَهُ مِن مُّكْرِمٍ﴾
“And he whom Allah humiliates—for him there is no one to honor.” (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:18)

Once again, when sins and immoralities become widespread in a Muslim society and when transgressions and misdeeds dominate among its members, this becomes a cause for its humiliation and disgrace before all of creation. It was narrated in the Musnad of Ahmad that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Disgrace and humiliation have been placed upon those who oppose my command.”

So, true honor lies only in fulfilling the obedience to Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, as Allah says:
﴿مَن كَانَ يُرِيدُ الْعِزَّةَ فَلِلَّهِ الْعِزَّةُ جَمِيعًا﴾
“Whoever desires honor—then to Allah belongs all honor.” (Surah Al-Fatir, 35:10)

When Cyprus was conquered, Abū al-Dardāʾ (may Allah be pleased with him) wept. He was asked, “What makes you weep on a day when Allah has honored Islam and its people?” He replied:
“How insignificant is creation to Allah when they abandon His commands. They were once a dominant and prevailing nation, ruling over others, but when they abandoned the command of Allah, they ended up in the state you now see.”

It was narrated in the Musnad that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“The nations will soon gather against you from every direction, just as diners gather around a feast.”
We asked, “O Messenger of Allah, is it because we will be few in number that day?”
He said: “No, you will be many, but you will be like the foam on a stream. Allah will remove the fear of you from the hearts of your enemies and will cast wahn into your hearts.”
They said, “O Messenger of Allah, what is wahn?”
He said: “Love of the world and hatred of death.”

Also narrated in the Musnad and Sunan Abī Dāwūd with a good chain:
The Prophet ﷺ said: “When you engage in ‘ʿīnah’ transactions, take hold of the tails of cattle, are content with farming, and abandon jihād, Allah will impose upon you humiliation, and He will not remove it until you return to your religion.”
In another narration:
“Allah will send upon you a calamity from the heavens, and He will not lift it until you return to your religion.”

Thus, among the supplications of the righteous predecessors was:
“O Allah, honor me through obedience to You, and do not humiliate me through disobedience to You.”

O brothers in Islam, among the effects of sins and disobedience upon the land and the people is that they bring about various kinds of corruption on earth — in the water, the air, crops, fruits, homes, and more. Allah the Most High says:

﴿ ظَهَرَ الْفَسَادُ فِي الْبَرّ وَالْبَحْرِ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِى النَّاسِ لِيُذِيقَهُمْ بَعْضَ الَّذِى عَمِلُواْ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْجِعُونَ ﴾
“Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people’s hands have earned, so He may let them taste some of what they have done — so they might return [to righteousness].” (Surah, al-Rūm 30:41)

The meaning of corruption in this verse refers to deficiencies, harm, and pain that occur on earth as a result of people’s sins. Every time they commit a sin, Allah sends upon them a punishment. Some of the righteous said:
“Every time you commit a sin, Allah sends a punishment from His dominion.”

Mujāhid said:
“When a tyrant rules and spreads oppression and corruption, Allah withholds the rain, and as a result, crops and livestock are destroyed.”
Then he recited the above verse and said:
“By Allah, it is not your sea that is referred to here, but every village near flowing water — that is their ‘sea’.”
Other scholars of tafsīr also gave this explanation.

In Sunan Ibn Mājah, ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“O Muhājirīn, there are five traits I seek refuge with Allah that you do not live to see:

  1. No people ever commit immoral acts publicly without being afflicted by plagues and diseases that never existed among their predecessors.
  2. No people ever cheat in measures and weights without being stricken with famine, severe hardship, and the oppression of rulers.
  3. No people ever withhold zakāh of their wealth without rain being withheld from the sky — and were it not for the animals, they would not be given any rain.
  4. No people ever break a covenant except that Allah empowers an external enemy over them who takes some of what they possess.
  5. No rulers ever abandon the Book of Allah and its laws except that Allah causes enmity and division among them.”

Also in the Musnad, from the narration of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her):
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When sins become widespread in my Ummah, Allah will send upon them a punishment from Himself.”

Therefore, O servants of Allah, the people of obedience and piety are safe from grief, anxiety, and distress. They are far removed from worry and confusion — because they have fulfilled the obedience of Allah and avoided His disobedience. Allah the Most High says:

﴿ فَمَنْ آمَنَ وَأَصْلَحَ فَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ﴾
“So whoever believes and reforms — there will be no fear for them, nor will they grieve.” (Surah, al-Anʿām 6:48)

And He, the Exalted, says:

﴿ إِنَّ الَّذِينَ قَالُواْ رَبُّنَا اللَّهُ ثُمَّ اسْتَقَـامُواْ فَلاَ خَوْفٌ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلاَ هُمْ يَحْزَنُونَ ﴾
“Indeed, those who say, ‘Our Lord is Allah’ and then remain steadfast — no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
(Surah, al-Aḥqāf 46:13)

So fear Allah, O servants of Allah, and fulfill His commands and you will succeed; avoid His disobedience and you will be happy.

“And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great triumph.”
(Surah, al-Aḥzāb 33:71)

May Allah bless me and you through the Qur’an, and benefit us with its verses and wisdom. I say these words of mine, and I seek forgiveness from Allah — indeed, He is the Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.

THE SECOND SERMON

All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, the Protector of the righteous, the Helper of the believers, the One who never breaks His promise. He says in His Noble Book:

“And We did certainly send before you messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. Then We took retribution from those who committed crimes, and incumbent upon Us was the support of the believers.” [Surah Ar-Rum, 30:47]

We praise Him, Exalted is He, and we send blessings and peace upon the best of Allah’s creation, our Master and Leader Muhammad, and upon his family, his companions, and all those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.

To proceed:

O servants of Allah, among the matters worthy of mention in our present time is the condition of our struggling, resisting, and oppressed brothers in Gaza al-‘Izzah (Glorious Gaza).

Hamas responds to Netanyahu’s remarks on the release of captives and surrender of Gaza:

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) stated that the remarks of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the release of captives and the surrender of Gaza reflect “delusional defeat,” and that their release will only happen through a deal dictated by the resistance.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, Hamas affirmed that Gaza will not surrender, and that the resistance will impose its conditions just as it has set the terms of engagement before. Hamas stated that Netanyahu’s claim about “releasing all hostages and Hamas surrendering” reflects psychological defeat, not the reality on the ground.

Military Pressure:

Netanyahu responded to a question about military control over Gaza by saying: “We are working to ensure that Hamas no longer rules the Gaza Strip.” He added: “We are determined to achieve all our goals: to free all the hostages, to eliminate Hamas’ military and governing capabilities, and to ensure that Gaza will no longer be a threat to us.”

It is worth noting that Netanyahu had a late-night meeting on Tuesday, 8th July 2025, with U.S. President Donald Trump — their second meeting within 24 hours — focusing primarily on Gaza.

O brothers in faith, Netanyahu, his soldiers, and his allies have failed on the battlefield. They have not achieved a single one of their goals since the beginning of their genocidal and destructive war that started two years ago. These dreams of theirs will not come true, by the permission of Allah, the All-Powerful.

Allah the Most High has said:

﴿وَلَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ (١٧١) إِنَّهُمْ لَهُمُ ٱلْمَنصُورُونَ (١٧٢) وَإِنَّ جُندَنَا لَهُمُ ٱلْغَـٰلِبُونَ﴾ [الصافات: 171-173]

“And Our word has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers, (171) [That] indeed, they would be those given victory. (172) And [that] indeed, Our soldiers will be those who overcome.”
[Surah As-Saffat, 37:171–173]

Du’aa:

O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it. O Allah, show us the falsehood as falsehood and grant us the strength to avoid it. O Allah, endear to us faith and beautify it in our hearts, and make us hate disbelief, wickedness, and disobedience. Make us among the rightly guided.

O Allah, honor Islam and the Muslims. O Allah, honor Islam and the Muslims. Support Your monotheistic servants. Make this country and all Muslim lands safe, secure, and prosperous.

O Allah, be the Supporter and Helper of the oppressed in Gaza al-‘Izzah. O Allah, be with the oppressed and not against them. O Allah, protect their blood, conceal their faults, and grant them peace in their fears. O Allah, replace their fear with security and their weakness with victory. O Allah, they are oppressed — so grant them Your victory. O Allah, give them victory over those who have transgressed against them — O Most Strong, O Most Mighty!

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. And bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You blessed Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
