Praise be to Allah, the lord of the worlds, the Creator of heavens and earth Who made Islam contain all affairs. Allah says: (﴿مَا فَرَّطْنَا فِي الْكِتَابِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ {الأنْعام:6\38}) “We have not neglected in the Register a thing.” We praise and thank Him for His grace and honour and seek help from Him … I testify there is no god but Allah alone, the Sovereign, the all-knowing. I testify that Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense.

Having said that,

Dear Muslims, I enjoin you all and myself to revere Allah in the open and in the secret. Allah says:

﴿ يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَكُمْ فُرْقَانًا وَيُكَفِّرْ عَنْكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ وَاللَّهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ﴾ {الأنفال:8\29}

” O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.” (8: 29) .

Brothers and Sisters in faith, today’s sermon is the fourth in Muharram. Last week we commenced our elucidation on political matters being the issue of the moment in Nigeria as we prepare for the general elections in 2019 by Allah’s leave. Last week we discussed The Modern Electoral Process: Evolution And Rulings, for today our focus is THE ISLAMIC UNDERSTANDING OF POLITICS.

The Arabic word- As-siyaasah- is a derivative of the verb, Saasa, meaning to take up a matter, which is to take charge of a task in a manner to improve it. It could as well refer to the mandate given by a people to a person to be in charge of their affairs. (Lisaanul Arab, 6/107).

Narrated Abu hurairah from the Prophet, peace be upon him, he said: The prophets used to lead the children of Israel, whenever a Prophet dies, another Prophet succeeds him. (Bukhari/ Muslim).

Nawawi said: meaning, that the Prophets direct their affairs like leaders do with the people. Politics is the standing up over a matter to better it.

Ibn Najeem said: Politics is the action emanating from the leader for the good he considers appropriate even where there is no relevant proof for the action. (Al-bahr ar-raaiq, 5/11)

Ibn Khaldun defines islamic governance (politics) as taking up task of people based on the islamic view for the benefits of the hereafter and the worldly in connection to the task, because the affairs of this world, from the islamic perspective is regarded in the interest of the hereafter, and in reality it is an act of representative of the Law giver in the guardianship of the religion and the control of the world by it. (Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun, pg 97)

Based on that, positing it in the people’s terminology, politics is an integral part of Islam, which could not be seperated, and there is no difference between politics and religion. In this narrative, the prophet, peace be upon him implemented the guided politics of wisdom in his governance and in the management of the State’s affair, because he came with a law which works on actualization and completion of benefits, including the reduction and displacement of harm or evil. In this direction followed the practice of the rightly guided caliphs and guided leaders after them. (At-tareeq al-hukmiyyah, Ibn Qayyim, pg 17-20)

Honoured Muslims, the western colonialists that ruled the Muslim nations were able to infuse western ideology into their intellect, leading to the thought that “Islam is a religion but not a state.” Religion, in the understanding of the west to the word- Religion. But regarding the state affairs, it has no connection with it. What dictates is the intellect solely, in accordance with its experience, and its growing environment.

They intended to apply to Islam in the East, what they have applied to christianity in the west. Just as growth was not completed except after gaining freedom from the hegemony of religion, so also it would be imperative to achieve growth in the Islamic Arab countries by the collapse of religion!!!

One of the most conspicuous manifestation of the success of the western culture is that the alien secular ideology which proclaims the separation of religion from state is not restricted to the educated people alone, more than that, it extends to those that studied religious knowledge at the highbred islamic institutions like the Azhar university, as stated in the book of Sheikh Ali Abdur Razaaq- Al-Islaam Wa Usool Al-hukm.

Therefore it is imperative to confront secularism and the proponents by establishing comprehensiveness of Islam, in addition to projection of this area in its rulings and teachings: in the area of statehood, its organisation, direction with the rulings and etiquettes. Also announcing that that is an integral part of Islam which cannot be separated. Which distinguishes its comprehensiveness with regards to time, place, and people, and its scripture was revealed as an explanation for all things, as Allah stated: (وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَى لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ)

“And We have sent down to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.” (16: 89)

All praises are due to Allah, We praise and thank Him, believe and depend on Him. I testify there is no god but Allah alone and I testify that our leader- Muhammad (pbuh) is his servant and messenger. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his household, companions and whoever follows them till the day of recompense. All praises are due to Allah Who created the heavens and the earth. May Allah bestow peace and blessings on Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his families, his pious companions and all those who follow his guidance.follow.

Secondly: The World Teachers’ Day- an annual event- is commemorated on the 5th Oct, annually, it is relevant to extol the virtues of teaching, and the teachers as exemplified in Islam.

Allah says: “Say, “Are those who know equal to those who do not know?” (39: 9)

Qualities of a teachers:

Some qualities of a teachers include: civilization, fortitude, tolerance, justice, and knowledge children psychology, truthfulness, honesty, sincerity, sociability, mental discipline, creativity, humility reasonable, cleanliness and perfection, accuracy, being adaptive, and contentment …

The duties of teachers:

Some of the duties of teachers include: teaching, advocacy, counseling, advising, training, education,… it is obligatory on him to carry out his duties rightly.

Sahl bin Sa’d, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him- said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: “I swear by Allah, for Allah to guide a person through you is better for you than the red camel.” Agreed upon.

Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, he reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: “Whoever calls to guidance will have a reward like that of those who follow him and that would not detract anything from their reward something,” narrated by Muslim.

He also, may Allah be pleased with him, said: The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said: “He that is asked about a knowledge and coveted it, he would be bridle on the day of judgement with reins of fire” Narrated by Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi, classified as good hadith.

The rights of teachers:

There is a common statement regarding the reward of teachers to be in heavens. They mean teachers should not wish for any fruit of their labour in this world, but their status in the afterlife is with Allah- the righteous, and that their portion in this world is poverty, deprivation and humiliation. However, this notion is indeed a fallacy and erroneous, because teachers are more deserving to be honored, respected and enriched, and adequately given incitement, … because on their shoulders are other professionals made, such as doctors,

Today, the teaching profession has become a profession for the dejected by employers of labour- both government and private sectors. They do not see any right worthwhile for teachers, while their salaries are so relatively meager. The society does not respect them because they are poor even some parents do not give them their daughters in marriage owing to their poverty. Sometimes, it is difficult for teachers to rent apartment for accommodation. In many states in Nigeria today, the government has not paid their salaries for many months whereas they have dependant to spend on!!! What a parable!!!.

Advice to Teachers: Beware of despicable characters: likes unemployment, laziness and corruption in its different forms, such as taking bribe for exam malpractices, adultery, ignorance, negligence, and anger, and excess love for materialism.

Thirdly: Dear honoured Muslims we would like to use this opportunity to commend The Muslim Congress across the country on the occasion of her annual lecture/ annual weekly activities. Today is a special Jum’ah service while the annual lectures itself would be held on Sunday, 7th October, 2018 with the theme: NIGERIA STABILITY: RELIGIOUS & POLITICAL LEADERS ON CALL. In the hadith of Ibn Abbas, the Prophet, peace be upon him said: “Two sets of people among my Ummah, if they are upright, people will be upright, but if they are corrupt, people will be corrupt; the rulers and the scholars.”

Oh Allah descend peace; flowing with continuous tranquility and security upon Nigeria and all other Muslim nations. O Allah accept the worship of the pilgrims of hajj and Umrah, and grant us all Your pleasure, And the last of our call will be, “Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”
